Subject: Eveningpaw's Moonstone Journey Thu 15 Feb 2024 - 5:27
You can’t fix the past, but you can change the future.
Following Daisyfang's sudden bout of coughing that left the medicine cat in camp for a while in order to recover as quickly as possible, Sootstorm was to take over the apprentices' moonstone journeys for now. It had been ages since he made the journey to the Highstones; in fact, the last time he want was when he was still an apprentice, for his own moonstone journey. It had been magical, a memory that he'd cherish for the rest of his life. No doubt Eveningpaw would appreciate it just as much as he did.
The tom picked up the bundle of bitter leaves that Daisyfang had passed to him and dropped it at Eveningpaw's foot. "Eat that-- yes, it's gross, but you'll be grateful for it soon-- and we can leave as soon as you're ready," Sootstorm repeated the instructions that the medicine cat had drilled into him for what felt like the entire evening. He waited patiently for Eveningpaw to finish the herbs, then led the way out of camp.
The way out of WindClan territory was unfortunately familiar. They passed on paths of grass that had been trodded on mere moons ago by five Clans' worth of paws, and reached the Highstones ahead of scheduel. Now came the part he was unfamiliar with. Sootstorm sniffed the entrance of the tunnel suspiciously, then gave Eveningpaw what he hoped looked like an encouraging smile. "Hold onto my tail and just follow me," He instructed her, then slipped into the tunnel. As promised, he stuck out his tail behind him, letting it brush Eveningpaw's whiskers every few heartbeats. The darkness closed in around him, but he shouldered through the thick shadows, and at last they reached the Moonstone. It was as beautiful as he remembered, and he took a moment to himself to admire it once more before turning to Eveningpaw. "Touch your nose to the Moonstone and sleep. StarClan will meet you in your dreams. I'll be here once you wake," Sootstorm repeated the script that he had been forced encouraged to memorise, before moving off to the corner to sit and wait.

Eveningpaw had been surprised when it was Sootstorm that had come to fetch her for the Moonstone. She had been so focused on preparing herself for it with the idea that Daisyfang would be leading her that she was left unsure what to do - what to even say as the deputy dropped the bundle of herbs at her paws. It wasn't that she didn't like Sootstorm - Sootstorm was very kind! But...She didn't know him all that well, rarely had they gotten a chance to speak which wasn't surprising - he was busy and she was just an apprentice...One who had been stuck as one for longer than she should have.
She nodded mutely as the words finally sank in, leaning down to lap up the herbs only to scrunch up her nose and bare her fangs at the taste. 'Its gross' felt like an understatement and she took some additional moments to lap up some snow to try to wash the taste away. It didn't help all that much but it was enough that she could set off after Sootstorm with only the mild of discomfort from the lingering taste.
The walk to the Moonstone was uneventful, the apprentice dutifully following along in silence as she gazed out at the horizon. Walking the path out of the territory made her fur prickle, having to remind herself that it wasn't like before - they would be back by sunrise at the latest. The path she knew however came to an end at the same point as Sootstorm's knowledge - halting as she glanced nervously past the deputy to look into the dark tunnel.
She nodded as he spoke, following him in. She was relieved that his tail was so close, to remind herself that he was near but the pure darkness of the tunnel made her heart start to beat faster. Was this what laid before her if she chose to become a tunneler after all...? Dark, tight caverns that she would have to learn to move in by her own whiskers...? The fear and uncertainty clawed away at her, leading her to take a step forward and gently grab Sootstorm's tail in her mouth, needing to be certain that there was no way she would somehow lose the deputy.
And so they descended, until the tunnel started to light up and she released Sootstorm's tail as she could start to make out his shape once more. As they stepped into the cavern, a sound of amazement escaped the apprentice as her tail swished back and forth. This was... The sight of the stone, glowing under the moonlight that filtered in was awe-inspiring. Her ears twitched as Sootstorm spoke, ushering her towards the stone. It...It almost felt wrong, touching her nose to such an amazing object - she didn't feel worthy of such things but she pushed herself forward nonetheless.
Reaching it, she slowly sank to the ground and pressed her nose against the stone's smooth surface. Despite the cold weather and bitter winds that had graced the moor, the stone felt even colder. It tore a surprised gasp of her but the brief bite of surprise soon eased into a calming feeling as her body gently urged her to slumber. She allowed her eyes to close, curling into a ball as she let the Moonstone lead her into the gently darkness of sleep and to the star dappled plains.
In front of Eveningpaw appeared a small tabby she-cat, perhaps a bit squirrel-like in appearance, with kind blue eyes. When she greeted the apprentice, it was with a smile. "Hello, Eveningpaw. My name is Lilacsong. I doubt I am remembered by any of your living Clanmates, although my kin remain, but I used to be the leader of WindClan during a very dark time. I saw the rise and fall of a group known as the Asylum, and I led my Clan to war with SkyClan."
Despite listing off the hardships she had faced in her life, Lilacsong still stood tall. All that was in the past now, and under the leadership of Tigerstar, she had faith in her Clan. Just as she had faith in the young molly standing before her.
"Life is never easy, but if there is some way I can help you through your dark times, I will. All you need to do is ask."
"speech."
Don't make the same mistakes I had. Your heart knows what is right, and your Clan will follow you. —— info.
