OATPAWare you going to age with grace?
he/him - windclan apprentice
"Heatherpaw?" The fluffy tom poked his head between the two boulders that shielded the apprentice den. Though WindClan cats preferred to sleep under the stars, it had been so cold lately that most of his Clanmates opted to sleep tucked in warmer places - in some of the fox or rabbit burrows that speckled the camp, or back by the gorse wall with the elders and kits. For the apprentices, that meant retreating into the corners of the open 'den', wedged up close to the boulders for a break from the wind. Oatpaw got the feeling, however, that Heatherpaw was wedged toward the back of the den for different reasons.

"...Heatherpaw...?" He called again, softer this time - worried at her lack of response. He was all too aware of the gazes of the other cats  on his back as he slipped from camp into the nook that formed the den. Heatherpaw had never shown up for the dawn patrol, and the warriors were waiting to leave with flattened ears and irritably twitching tails. As the only other apprentice in their party, he'd naturally been sent after her. For a brief moment, watching her small form tucked peacefully into the corner of the den, he wondered if she was even alive. But her flanks rose and fell with new breath, and he felt relief pulse beneath his pelt. Oatpaw padded closer, caution silencing each pawstep. His eyes widened with concern. Though he'd never quite patrolled with her, he knew Heatherpaw was a dedictated young cat. She wouldn't miss a patrol or sleep in like this unless something was going on. Was something going on?

Oatpaw paused to think. He knew her sister had been made a warrior recently - ages before he or even Eveningpaw. Was she upset about that? Surely she knew each cat moved at their own pace. His paws itched with apprehension as he neared. Maybe he wasn't the best cat to be dealing with this. But he had a duty to his Clanmates, didn't he? They were his family, after all. He reached one paw out, nervous despite his usual, trademark confidence, and prodded her as gently as he could. "Hey, get up." He murmured softly, his eyes glittering with compassion.

A dark cloud had permanently settled on the fringes of Heatherpaw's brain. Since Crakeburn's ascension to warriorhood, white hot jealously had burned in her stomach. Dreams had become wild and restless, filled with fury and strife. The pale-furred apprentice's tail twitched persistently as her flank rose and fell in uneven breaths that betrayed a constant malaise. As frail wisps of light had begun to delicately highlight the horizon, the molly had pushed herself away from the light and way from the cold, finding just enough solace in shutting out the world around her. She dreamed of clashing with cats on the dawn patrol, showing her skills, and earning a name.

In this obscured version of reality that her mind contrived, she stood proudly in the center of camp, waiting for Tigerstar to call her forward. But instead, as a mirror to the events in her past, it was not her name called. Hey, get up.  The words sounded muted and far away. She blinked slowly, quickly leaving behind the world of dreams but not without the feelings of bitter disappointment as potent as ever. Eyes bright as the moonstone glanced up to fixate Oatpaw with a discontented glare. Her tail tip began its rhythmic twitching once again and her head tilted to the side as she ground out, "While some cats might be okay with being prodded awake, I'm not one of them."

As soon as the venomous words left her maw, it dawned on her why Oatpaw had roused her from sleep. Dawn Patrol. There was no outward indication of this revelation as she rose to stretch out, parting her maw in a brief yawn. Once the routine was finished and her pelt shook out, Heatherpaw began padding towards where the rest of the patrol waited, "Keep up, Oatpaw. We don't have all morning." Despite the subtle jab, her words were much lighter than before, lacking any measures of genuine displeasure. Were it not for the neutral look across her maw, it would have been easy to write off the remarks as mere teasing between apprentices.

Oatpaw was just about set to prod Heatherpaw again when she finally awoke, blinking her eyes open with burning irritation. He recoiled at her words. Oh. Had he overstepped? He'd only wanted to wake her for the patrol - he didn't mean to be rude. "I'm sorry." Oatpaw blinked, suddenly feeling small. His brown eyes flashed with dismay. He'd never been met with such a brusque tone, and yet he couldn't help but feel as though it was his fault. His pelt burned with shame and embarassment. Seriously, Oatpaw. What's wrong with you?

Still - there was real venom behind her words. A venom he'd never heard before, not from any cat. Oatpaw had, perhaps, been sheltered - coddled, even - by his Clan, by the easy, calm life of an apprentice untouched by war or grief. His ears flattened as his eyes searched the ground at his feet. "I'm really sorry," He said again, dejectedly. Was he trying to convince himself it was alright? "Um - they just said to wake you, and you - you weren't waking up, so I... it won't happen again." Oatpaw resolved, trying not to mumble. His tail lashed in the darkness of the den. He watched Heatherpaw pad ahead, feeling stupid as she left. Part of him wanted to curl up in the corner of the small shelter and hide his face for the rest of the day. At her words, though, he hurried forward, rushing to catch up with her and match her pace.

Oatpaw eyed his denmate carefully as he padded alongside her. Her tail twitched irritably, her own ears flattening against the side of her head.  She stalked toward the patrol, and despite the new lightness in her tone, Oatpaw could tell she was annoyed. Surely her pelt wasn't so hot with anger over something as small as being prodded awake. Oatpaw wanted to say something, though he got the sense it wasn't the best idea. Still, his concern for his Clanmate outweighed his own distress. Is she okay? Did he dare ask? He took a deep breath, preparing to have his pelt torn off. Maybe he was overstepping - they weren't exactly friends, after all - but that didn't mean he didn't worry. "Heatherpaw," Oatpaw began hesitantly, his eyes widening with concern. "Is everything okay?"

Admittedly, there was an immediate flash of pity in the she-cat's chest. Her denmate had only come to wake her when she overslept. It was projected frustrations that caused Heatherpaw to nearly claw off his ears. As the apology came, she huffed and her tail continued to lash. Silently, she responded, it better not. Thankfully, Oatpaw couldn't hear her words but with her physical irritation on full display, it was likely easy to decipher what she was feeling.

Tigerstar's voice echoed in her head, the words grating like claws on stone. Her teeth clenched impossibly tight until her jaw began to ache. It should have been her sleeping in the warrior's den so she didn't have to deal with half-witted apprentices who lacked any tact. Larchpaw was decent. Oatpaw, kind and soft as he was, lacked the heart of a warrior that she respected. As the pair trailed behind the rest of the patrol, she had set her gaze to burn into the frosted moorlands. The intrusion of her denmate's words stoked the fire withing.

Biting back more venomous words, the pretty she-cat cast him a scathing glance and for a moment said nothing, before grinding out a simple response that ignored his question, "You must really like being an apprentice, Oatpaw."

It wasn't lost on him, the way Heatherpaw swept right past his question. Sure, he might seem oblivious sometimes, but it didn't fly over his head like she might've thought. His eyes narrowed, but he padded beside her nonetheless, keeping his head and tail low. He'd woken up so prepared for the day, but his morning had since been soured. It might as well have been rainy and dreary. Still, the sun shone bright above them, and he cursed it for its seeming mockery. He couldn't even enjoy today anymore. The patrol had all but left them behind, and his denmate was upset with him for...what? Making sure she didn't sleep through her duties? Caring about her, as a Clanmate and as a potential friend? Oatpaw didn't understand. What had he done wrong? The question burned in his mind, but he refused to ask it. She might answer with claws. He kept his gaze on the ground, continuing to walk beside Heatherpaw despite how he wanted to tear away.

You must really like being an apprentice. What did she mean by that? The words seemed harmless enough, but the hatred in her bright blue gaze pierced at him. This was all so stupid. Why did she choose to be miserable? He opened his jaws to reply, but hesitated. He shouldn't ask that. He'd be no better than her if he did. "Well...yeah," Oatpaw answered honestly, flinching in anticipation of what she might have to say to that. "Learning how to serve your Clan?  To be the best warrior you can be? Don't...you?" He shrunk underneath his pelt, realizing he was probably opening himself up to more passive aggressive comments and misery. His normally bright gaze was dull with embarrassment.

It didn't bring her pleasure to see the tom shrink into himself but she was hoping the icy reception would at least scare him away. Unfortunately, he still seemed to miss the point and answered genuinely. Heatherpaw's tail continued to flicker rhythmically as she stayed at the heels of the patrol. Her half-lidded gaze focused ahead instead of on her denmate. How could Tigerstar think her time was better spent within the apprentice's den training alongside cats like Oatpaw? Her whiskers twitched at the thought.

"Some things don't need to be taught. Some cats are born with natural talent." Like me. The words were unsaid but buried underneath her impatient tone was an unyielding self-assurance. Each step she took was a stride that proudly displayed her Windclan heritage. Her silken coat was groomed to perfection and rippled as the wind touched each strand. Even the slight nick in her curled ear was hardly noticeable against the backdrop of such a pristine appearance.

There was no malice as she spoke up again, just a simple statement, "I'm heading to the front of the patrol. You'll learn a thing or two back here though."

Oatpaw watched her leave, his ears pinning back against his head as she left him behind. A natural talent. Did she really think she was ready to be a warrior from her sixth moon? What, all because her dad was the deputy? A new emotion burned beneath his paws - one he was a stranger to. Not embarrassment, not the confusion she'd left him with earlier, but a new one: anger. He would never go so far as to say dislike, and certainly never hate - not his own Clanmate, not his fellow cat. He felt bad even at the light irritation pricking at his gaze.

But he didn't understand. He hadn't done anything - he'd never really spoken to her before today, so why did her own denmate deserve that treatment? And perhaps even more frustrating: how was she so full of herself? He clenched his jaw, counting to ten and taking deep breaths as he brought up the patrol's rear. This was fine. Someone had to flank the patrol and keep watch. And he'd rather not be around her, anyway.

He had no parting words - he wanted to wish her well, but instead bit back a more bitter comment. He didn't even say bye or have fun. He didn't ask what he'd done wrong, even though he desperately wanted to. What was the use? He just let her leave.
