To the Fishers Go the Spoils [o]

It had felt like ages since Duckpaw had last been crouched at a body of water - they had been so ill for their entire time away and had scarcely been even afforded the chance to visit the shore before they were chased away. It felt...Nice to be hunting again, it felt more their element than border patrols at least. It was easier to step back to sleep off their odd moments of doziness when their time was to be spent at the edge of the river than when it struck in the middle of walking along the borders. So here they were - trying their paws at fishing. They remembered everything Hawkshrike had told them and it sent a pang of grief through them at the thought of their late mentor.

They knew if they raised the question to Perchstar or Poppyshine they could likely get a new one but...They had been an apprentice for so long already it felt like, surely they could figure out the last bit of their training on their own...? Surely it wasn't worth giving a cat an apprentice who could barely keep their eyes open sometimes... Their ears slicked back as their eyes remained focused on the ripples of the river - the shadows that darted beneath the surface. It was lucky that the river wasn't frozen - thought it certainly felt cold enough to be so from when Duckpaw had put their paw in to test. No doubt the lazy current was to blame - the movement making the water harder to freeze...Or maybe it was a hopeful sign that the worse of Leaf-bare was over.

Their thoughts and musing were interrupted as one of the fishes darted close to where they were lurking - instinct taking over as they swipe into the water. They couldn't help but wince at the coldness but their paw struck true and they dragged a minnow from the water. With a quick bite to end its flailing, Duckpaw pushed it further from the shore before they went back to waiting - being mindful on their own level of tiredness. It wouldn't do to fall asleep and slip into the river...
