Just a Bunch of Fishers[CLOSED]

Jaystar led the small patrol through his land until they reached the edge of Riverclan's territory. The Sunningrocks were being painted with a few rays of sunshine and the river, with more water than usual, passed by calmly with plenty of fish. The damage of the flood was slowly being repaired by its own nature and all the clans were also rebuilding their lives after so many were lost. So many cats died yet... beauty could still be in the hard work of the ones who remained, the cats who were working the rebuild their broken homes to make them shine again for the sake of everyone's sacrifice. There were simply so many ways to see the sunrise... and everything kept moving on. Yet... the tom still felt lost. Despite the young blood coming into his clan... even if there was hope in new apprentices like Adderpaw... the leader had lost too many. His kits, his first mate... the trust of the ones he loved and respected... his lives as the leader. Starclan saw trough and punished by keeping him in charge in the middle of all the madness of the flood. What was he supposed to do now? Keep seeing all his clanmates mourning? Keep seeing how many keep dying? What if Adderpaw doesn't make it to warriorhood either? What if he failed another cat again? He didn't want to keep running from the truth... Jaystar just wanted to shout everything, to tell Berrycloud, Sparkfrost and Ivypaw that he was his father before it was too late. But it he did that... then the clan would judge them as the kits of a forbidden romance... rotten apples that probably didn't deserve to be warriors of Riverclan. He simply couldn't do that to them...

"Okay, Dappleshine, you know how this works. Adderpaw is still under training so I will stay and hunt with him. Feel free to hunt wherever you want but don't forget to stay close. Thunderclan may be peaceful for now but we can't let our guards down." He mewed, throwing his depressing thoughts away for the sake of the patrol and Adderpaw's training. With a movement of his feathery tail, the striped tom guided the apprentice to the edge of the river. "As you might have noticed, fish is our main source of food and that's why all apprentice must learn how to hunt it. First of all, you should watch Dappleshine. Do you think you can give Adderpaw an example of how is done?" He mewed making a happy (fake) smile.

OOC: The Hunting System is easier than the battle system. All you need is found in this topic: Hunting System. Remember how you selected the "Effect Dice"? Well now you have to select the Hunting Dice that will give you a number from 1 to 10. Before you send your post, you must select the prey you want to catch and each type of prey has different intervals of numbers. For example, Riverclan cats can catch fish if they roll a number from 1 to 9, but they can only catch birds if they roll a number between 1 and 4. So, you choose your prey, then you select the hunting dice and after that, you send the post to see if the catch was successful or not. After that, you edit your previous to add the result of the catch.
Also, under new rules, hunting attempts also cost Stamina! Remember to check your stamina points in the Rank system. Each attempt costs 3 SP but in leaf-bare, it costs 5 SP. Since we are in Newleaf, you will only lose 3 SP. See what Mosspelt and then feel free to post after them, Ceryn :3

Dappleshine followed behind Jaystar and his new apprentice, trying to stay positive. Magpiepaw had been avoiding her like she had fleas ever since the ceremony, and still wouldn't talk to her and would leave if she came around. The wound in her heart throbbed at the memory of him turning his back on her. Even now, though she had been given the honor of hunting with the leader and his apprentice, she found it difficult to take pride in it. Jaystar's voice broke through her internal stream of thoughts, and her eyes met his, and for a moment she could have sworn that his eyes echoed her own. She blinked, steeling her emotions before she mewed back. "Yes, Jaystar."

Listening in on the leader, a flicker of pride swelled in her chest as he requested that she demonstrate how it's done, and she prayed to StarClan that she wouldn't miss. She couldn't let both the apprentice and her leader down after all. She nodded, giving a small smile to the apprentice. "Of course!" Settling in close to the water, she ensured her shadow didn't fall on the surface. Waiting until a fish foolish enough to swim too close came along, her paw shot out quickly. A large fish was flung neatly into the air, and she jumped, her gray pelt flashing in the light of the water droplets that cascaded from the fish, catching it neatly and landing lightly on all four paws. After turning away from the water, she nipped it at the head, and the fish stopped flopping. She whispered a thanks to StarClan for the prey, and for the brilliant catch, and turned back to Jaystar and Adderpaw with a more genuine smile this time. At least she hadn't let them down.

Adderpaw carefully watched Dappleshine go after the fish, not wanting to miss any part of the technique and not be able to replicate it when it came to be his turn.

Now it was his turn to catch the fish, and he carefully moved towards the water. He settled down and watched the water move for a moment, scanning for a fish. He was suddenly nervous that he would be too slow to catch anything, that he would hesitate just a little too long. The fish, after all, weren't exactly going to wait for him to be ready to grab one of them. He didn't know why he was so worried; he was training. If he didn't catch anything, he didn't catch anything-- it would be perfectly expected. But still, that little piece of him that over-thought things was hard at work trying to convince his more sensible side that he would look like a fool if he couldn't get this right.

He shook off his thoughts; a fish was approaching. Not wanting to over-hesitate, he darted his paw out to try and snatch it. He felt a bit of relief as his paw made contact with the fish and he was able to snatch it out of the water and toss it onto the land. He sat down happily in front of his prey.

Mistlepaw trotted after the small patrol, green eyes scanning the territory for herbs rather than new additions to the prey pile. While hunting for prey did seem exciting, she had a job to do: Fallowlight wouldn't have sent her away, grumbling about the medicine stock being low, if she hadn't. After gazing upon the territory, still recovering from the flood, she concluded that there wouldn't be much to find. A small sigh escaped her maw as she placed the large oak leaf she had been carrying onto the ground. Whatever she could gather, she would bring back. That was the most important thing the newly-named medicine cat apprentice could worry about.

She trotted over to the water, stooping down to sniff at several plants growing along the banks. What was it called again?..Fallowlight had told her about it, and let her sniff at it to recognize the smell in the future. It started with an 'f'..but she couldn't quite put her paw on it. Nevertheless, she would bring it back. Her mentor would explain it to her again later. Gently, she pulled some out of the ground with her teeth, and padded towards the oak leaf. Happiness swelled in her chest as she placed the herb down inside the large leaf. It wasn't much, but it was something that would hopefully benefit the clan.

The leader purred gladly to the two cats and smiled genuinely to both of them. It was always encouraging for a new apprentice like Adderpaw to have a first successful catch! But it wasn't like he doubted him. After all, as a pure Riverclan cat, he was meant to be an exceptional catcher of fish. "You did a great job, both of you. Adderpaw, you will be a great fisher one day and basically, hunting is just a matter of practice and more practice. There isn't much I can teach you with words but with demonstrations so keep watching both me and Dappleshine and don't forget to try yourself." After saying that, the large tom made his way to the river, letting the water cover his paws and part of his long legs. Quietly and with patience, the experienced warrior waited for his time to come and when a large shadow swam nearby, he leapt over it.

However, before he could catch it, a large creature was suddenly over him and Jaystar did not have the time to react to the large eagle. Its claws tore the skin of his shoulder and the leader fell on one side, getting his fur all wet and muddy while the bird attempted to keep hurting him with its claws. Everything suddenly turned into a tornado of feathers and water while the silvery tom tried to see a weak point in the eagle's frenzy attacks.

Jaystar used 3 SP to try and catch a fish: the catch was NOT successful and an Eagle has appeared!

Watching Adderpaw, she waited as he put himself into position. His catch was wonderful, and as he sat proudly next to his catch, Dappleshine's internal turmoil dissipated as she let out a purr and gave him a smile. "Great catch, Adderpaw! My first time trying to catch a fish, I ended up  missing entirely, and the only thing I caught was a mouthful of water!" She laughed lightly, before turning to watch their leader wade into the water a little ways. He waited for a moment before leaping onto a shadow, but a different shadow caught Dappleshine's eye, one that wasn't coming from below the water, but above. Her head shot up as the eagle dove, and her cry resounded too late, the eagle already attacking Jaystar.

"No!!" She yowled, preparing to leap into action. "Mistlepaw, stay safe, I don't want you to get hurt. Adderpaw, looks like it's time to use your battle skills, just do what Jaystar has taught you - you'll do fine." Leaping forward into the water, Dappleshine planted her front legs on the stones and kicked her hind legs towards the bird, knocking it away from Jaystar momentarily. Landing back on all fours, she spun to face the bird, adrenaline running through her veins.

Dappleshine used Back Kick, dealing 10 damage and costing 15 stamina.

Adderpaw nodded appreciatively at Jaystar and Dappleshine's praise of his catch. "Thank you," he said happily. "And hopefully it's not just beginner's luck!". He looked back down at the fish he caught for a moment, still excited at how well it went.

Dappleshine's yowl snapped him out of his thought. He glanced over and saw the eagle making its dive out of the corner of his eye. Adderpaw got up quickly, his body tensing up. His eyes immediately went to the eagle's sharp talons and beak, and he felt small looking at it. This was his first actual fight. Despite Dappleshine's assurance, he wondered to himself if he could possibly be of any help, with what little training he had, and the thought hit him that the only thing he might end up contributing to the fight would be his own wounds. But he knew running or backing down wasn't an option in this situation. Taking a deep breath, he quickly tried to find a good balance, and then lashed out at the eagle with his claws.

The yowl of her clanmates startled Mistlepaw out of her herb-collecting daze. Her head snapped towards the source of the ruckus, and her eyes widened in horror as she watched the eagle descend upon Jaystar, talons outstretched. Frozen in place, she gaped at the feathered creature as it clawed into her grandfather's shoulder, leaving behind a long, bleeding gash. As the others within the patrol launched themselves into battle, her eyes remained fixated on Jaystar's wound as blood slowly trickled down his silver fur.

She..she had to do something! Right? She couldn't fight though, and having to protect her would probably burden the warriors even more. Dappleshine was right. She should probably hide. She would fix his wound later. It wasn't like he was going to bleed out..it was just a scratch...a big..scary eagle scratch- Shaking her head slightly, Mistlepaw slipped quietly into the bushes and watched the battle ensue.

When the big bird was attacked by both cats, it had stepped back and it gave Jaystar a clear spot to counterattack. In just a few seconds the large leader had rolled over his body to stand up and slash the eagle's soft underbelly with his unsheathed claws. The blood jumped into his face but he couldn't care less. Adrenaline had his body moving along and fighting for survival right now. He had to take this predator down.

The bird, on the other side, wasn't going to give up so easily. Letting out a high screech, he attacked the silver tom's chest with its claws, tearing flesh and fur.

Jaystar used Belly Rake, dealing 20 damage and costing 10 stamina.

Dappleshine blinked as crimson blood splattered against her pelt, soaking into her fur just as the water at her paws did. As much as she wanted to shout encouragement to Adderpaw, there was no time. At least, not yet. She'd have to praise him later, he landed a sound hit on the bird. This battle was so different from the one in the mountains against the dogs. Instead of a sister of choice and a friend, both older and younger, fighting as an apprentice, she was fighting alongside the leader and an apprentice as a warrior. If only Magpiepaw could see this, maybe then he would finally speak to her again.... Positioning herself on the other side of the bird from Jaystar, she raised herself onto her hind legs, bringing unsheathed claws crashing down onto the bird that had been foolish enough to attack.

Adderpaw was eager to end the fight with the eagle as quickly as possible. Even though he'd managed to land his first blow without much trouble, the big bird still made him extremely nervous. How could he possibly know what it was thinking? The idea that he couldn't bothered him, and in his mind that made it more dangerous than any cat. He tried his best not to think about it too much or to look too long at its talons as he made his move, striking at its stomach.

Mistlepaw winced as blood splashed over the cats like crimson rain, and she had to look away to keep from gagging. Whether it came from the eagle or her clanmates, it didn't matter. She would nose over them later, to check for injuries. She had to remain patient, lest she needed to interfere because one of her clanmates were in serious danger. They could handle themselves, though. They didn't need their medicine cat in training yet.
