Honeypaw

It was an unusually warm, windless day for leafbare, the sunhigh sun shining down into the makeshift SkyClan camp creating a thaw in the snow and ice. Thawing trees dripped pools at their bases, and the snow was soft and wet underpaw. Many of the SkyClan warriors took advantage of this weather by sunning themselves outside their dens, and Wolfblossom had put together many hunting patrols to catch whatever prey could be found wandering from their burrows. While many of the warriors had been sent hunting, Honeypaw had remained in camp. The warmth felt as though it was thawing more than just the world around her. She felt much better than she had in many days since the gathering.

She had so much fun caring for Paledove and being around her kits. Paledove was a fierce queen who was extremely protective of her kits, and Honeypaw respected that. Her kits were so cute, and they all had such unique and defined personalities from one another. This would be the perfect opportunity for them to play outside the nursery, Honeypaw thought, squinting in the warm sunlight.

She padded over to the nursery, her paws making deep, wet tracks in the snow, and ducked her head inside.
"Hey, kits," she mewed playfully, "Does anyone want a badger ride??" She immediately backed out, crouching down into the snow, her tail whipping back and forth in excited anticipation. She almost couldn't suppress her giggles!

Stormwatcher was still sick but feeling a bit better today, either from the unusal warmth of the day or from the herbs he couldnt tell but he was able to actually sit up for once and walk around a little outside of the med den! Not a great accomplishment by usual standards but kit steps for now having been knocked out for a while with all this.

Honeypaw's voice caught his attention and his ears perked up at the idea of this! Oh this should be entertaining to watch if nothing else.

As gruff as he could sometimes be, he had a real soft spot for kits and apprentices and, he was actually pretty decent with them as well. When it came to kits he still knew how to play and have fun so long as none of his fellow warriors were looking and when it came to apprentices, he was very protective of them in general.

He settled into a spot that was relativly clear of snow and hoped to soon watch the apprentice give out badger rides to the many kits that were sure to take her up on such an offer.

Cricketkit pinned her ears from where she was curled up against Paledove at the sudden face in the entrance of the den. She backed deeper in the abyss of her mother’s fur, eyes slitted and hackles raised, but it was just Honeypaw, who sometimes brought them moss to play with. Slowly, her ears flicked back up, whiskers twitching in curiosity at the apprentice’s offer. Badger rides?

The tabby and white she-kit cautiously edged out of the nursery, fluffy tail puffed out to twice its size as her eyes darted around for threats in the shadows. It seemed safe enough. It wasn’t hard to find Honeypaw, radiating energy as she waited in the snow. Cricketkit slowly approached, muscles taunt and ready to send her sprinting back into the safety of the nursery at the first sign of trouble. “What's a badger ride?” She asked quietly, staring up at the older cat with her strange mis-matched eyes, one pale white ear flicking in curiosity.

Honeypaw

Honeypaw's ears pricked forward as she detected tiny pawsteps approaching up out of the nursery tunnel. It was Cricketkit! She was one of the more adventurous kits in Paledove's litter, and one of the first ones Honeypaw had the pleasure of meeting. It felt natural that she'd be the first one out today.

"Hi, Cricketkit," Honeypaw chirped. "Badger rides are fun! It's a game where I pretend to be a badger, and you can hitch a ride on my back. You have to try to hold on as I take you around the camp. I'll go slow and easy at first, since it's your first time. Do you want to try?" Her big blue eyes were wide and held a playful glint as she stayed crouched in the snow, her tail beckoning Cricketkit up. "It doesn't hurt if you fall off. If you do, I'll just crouch and you can try again!"

"Your littermates can join too, if they want. I think I can hold up to three of you," she considered. "Maybe four. I dunno, you're all growing so big so fast, I'd just have to try!" She smiled welcomingly at the kit in front of her.

Cricketkit listened very carefully, fluffy tail swaying behind her as she digested everything Honeypaw was saying. “O-oh, okay.” She said, taking a minute to consider the apprentice’s crouched stance in the snow. “That sounds…fun.” The she-tip took a cautious step forward, like this may all still be some elaborate joke. In a determined bound, Cricketkit scrambled up Honeypaw’s shoulder and clung tightly to her fur. “I’ll try not to fall.”

She flattened her body against the small she-cat’s back, gripping tightly with her tiny claws. She poked her head up just slightly, ears rotating back so they were level with her head, pupils blown wide as she took in her new vantage point. The joy was short lived once she realized how vulnerable she was, up high and in the open, completely at Honeypaw’s mercy. ”You won’t drop me on purpose right?” She asked with a slight shake to her voice, hunkering down into the apprentice’s pelt just in case the pointed she-cat decided to roll over and try and squish her. Maybe this was a bad idea after all.

Honeypaw

Honeypaw remained very still as the tiny she-kit clambered onto her back and sunk her little needle-like claws into her fur. She slowly stood up, offering Cricketkit the view of the camp from the perspective of an apprentice.

"Of course not," Honeypaw purred. "I just want you to have fun with it, Cricketkit." Her whiskers twitched, and she took slow, meaningful steps forward, careful not to shift her weight too much to rattle her precious little bundle attached to her back. She nodded to the direction of the apprentice's den first. "Look, over there is where all the apprentices sleep. That's where I sleep," she mewed to the kit. "One day, you and all your littermates will move there, but not for a long time yet," she soothed. She carefully stepped closer to the den, offering Cricketkit the full view.

"And from here," she continued, turning slowly, carefully, to face another direction. "That over there is the warrior's den, where all the warriors sleep. And over there is where Birdstar calls clan meetings. That little rise over there is where Wolfblossom organizes the patrols..." Honeykit was having so much fun! She had no idea how fun it would be to play with the little kits.

"Do you like it, Cricketkit? Do you want to get down now? Do you want me to take you back?" she offered, "Or we can keep going, and I'll show you some other cool places in the camp." She stopped walking, lowering herself closer to the ground as to not scare the tentative she-kit in case she wanted to get down.

“Honeypaw!!” A squeaky-voiced cheer escaped from inside the nursery, followed quickly by an overexcited ball of fluff on four legs as Ospreykit bounded over to them. “You’re giving badger rides? Can I play?” The questions came rapid-fire as soon as she spotted her sister stacked on top of Honeypaw. “-Or I can wait.” She added, noticing how Cricketkit’s claws clung tight to the apprentice’s pelt. Her sister already seemed nervous and despite how enthusiastic Osprey was, she didn't mean to overwhelm anyone. She'd been reminded a few times already to slow down and not roughhouse so much with the meaker kits, not burden other cats with a million questions. It wasn't like she did it on purpose. She was curious and energetic by nature, not to mention a young kit with a matching attention span. Everything was just so exciting! All of the time!

“Honeypaw won’t let you fall, don’t worry. She’s a lot nicer than a real badger!” Ospreykit joked, instinctively trying to reassure her as she often did with her littermates. “Plus you’re doing a great job holding on!” Cricketkit definitely had a talent for holding onto things, evident in how she usually clung nervously to Paledove until she was told it was alright to do otherwise. But their mother was back in the nursery, so Osprey stepped up to be the one to encourage her sister. She hoped Cricketkit would agree that badger rides were fun, not scary. Then they could play together!

Waves of exhilaration and terror chased each other around in circles in Cricketkit’s chest. The view was amazing, and slowly the kit began to poke her head up more often to look in wonder at all the places Honeypaw showed her. “Thank you Honeypaw.” She said softly, giving the apprentice a shy but appreciative lick on the ear. “It was actually kind of fun.” She gently kneaded her paws into Honeypaw’s pale ruff as she poked her head over the side.

Her ears flattened back when her sister mentioned a real badger. “I’m glad badger rides don’t involve actual badgers.” She said in a whisper, like even voicing that thought might send a horde of terrible monsters to lay siege on the camp. She scooted over to make room for Ospreykit anyway, because her sister was being nice. “C’mon.” She flicked her fluffy tail invitingly to her littermate. ”Can we go again Honeypaw?”

Honeypaw

Honeypaw let out a purr as the second kit, Ospreykit, joined them outside the nursery. "Of course you can join, Ospreykit," she mewed, glancing back at the bundle of her hanging onto ther scruff. Her whiskers twitched at the exchange between the sisters. It reminded her of how much her brothers used to shoot back and forth with each other, when they were still in the nursery. "We can go again! And this time, I can carry both of you, don't worry." Honeypaw lowered herself to the ground, her belly fur soaking through with the wet, slushy snow. "Keep holding on, Cricketkit, while Ospreykit gets on too! Remember to hold on tight, both of you."

Honeypaw couldn't help but feel like this was the first real fun she'd had since she became an apprentice. She found herself visiting Paledove and her kits more often than her own siblings these days - apart from their rigorous training sessions together. There was something about the sweet kit-scent and warmth of the nursery that just felt so right. Playing with the kits, showing them the camp, and knowing that they would one day turn out to be fine SkyClan warriors, was more motivating for Honeypaw than any battle training or hunting she could do. This was where she felt at peace. Honeypaw silently vowed to continue playing with the clan's kits and helping the queens even after she became a warrior. She couldn't imagine ever being too busy to make time for them.

"Where would you like to go?" she asked the kits.

Yewkit had hesitated to take up her offer initially when Honeypaw ducked her head into the nursery. However, as his sisters tumbled out of the nursery to join the apprentice he couldn't help but feel curious. Besides, what even is a badger? Paledove had told stories, but...

He stepped towards the entrance of the nursery, peaking out with wide and cautious eyes. His whiskers twitched with amusement as he watched the chaos. "What is this?" He asked from the nursery, his voice laced with laughter. A part of him wanted to join. Paledove seemed to accept Honeypaw, so she couldn't be all bad. His sisters seemed to really like her, too, and they were a foundation of confidence for him. He had to be there to protect his sisters.

He padded out of the nursery, taking hesitant steps through the snow. He took a final glance back at the nursery, towards Paledove and the rest of his siblings before he joined the group. "Where are you all going?" He quickly added, flicking his ear. He assumed this is what a badger meant - doesn't seem too scary! He quickly decided that he could beat a badger with a single paw swipe. His eyes sparkled with newfound confidence.

MALLOWKIT !
Mallowkit curled into a tighter ball in the nursery, his light gray paws reaching up to rest atop his ears. All the commotion in the nursery was interrupting his nap. As tired as he was, and as much as he was enjoying soft, pillowy dreams he supposed that the noise was his cue to wake up. A frustrated sigh left the little tom.

He rose to his paws, screwing up his eyes against the blinding light outside the den. The light that reflected off of the snow made everything much, much brighter than things were in the nursery. Stretching out his lanky body with a soft crack of his joints, he ambled out of the nursery to stand nearby Yewkit.

Mallowkit's jaws parted into a dramatic yawn, smacking his chops loudly to emphasize his tiredness to his denmate. "What's going on...?" He mewed, stretching his neck forward as he watched Honeypaw and the two kits on her back. "What are they doing?" He sounded - and looked - completely dumbfounded, ears swiveling backwards and head cocked to the side.

Ospreykit beamed, bouncing up a bit on her pawpads. “Yay!” She scrambled up Honeypaw’s side enthusiastically. Once she was atop the apprentice’s back it was a struggle to hold still. She wasn’t used to the shifting under her paws as Honeypaw rose up again, but with natural-born Skyclan agility and briar-like claws she managed to hold on. Now she saw why Cricketkit was so nervous up here, but for her the challenge was exhilarating. Ospreykit’s tail flicked side to side aiding her balance as she learned the best way to hold on. It was fun but also a good ability for the kit to build. There were reasons kits played the games they did beyond just distraction. Playfights, pouncing, badger rides- all helped the kits practice for when they became apprentices and would need such skills. Ones that could be important in the looming, uncertain future…

But of course none of this was on Ospreykit’s mind as she took in the view of the camp with sharp golden eyes. From this higher vantage point she could see so much more! Including two new potential play-mates entering the field. “Honeypaw’s giving badger rides!” She answered the staring kits loudly. Enthusiasm over context per usual. “You can come play too- if you think you can hold on!” She ribbed lightly, teasing Mallowkit for his obvious sleepiness. Yewkit she knew would take it as a challenge, ensuring her brother joined in the game.

Honeypaw's eyes lit up at the approach of not one - but two more kits!
"Like Ospreykit said, we're playing badger rides!" she replied to both the curious kits. "As you can see, Cricketkit and Osprey kit have climbed on my back. I can carry you all around. It's really fun! You just have to hang on tight!" Her tail flicked back and forth with anticipation, and her whiskers twitched as she suppressed a giggle when the little kit teased her denmates. How snarky! Honeypaw thought warmly. "Come on, hop up, both of you! I won't drop you, and I'll go real slow."
