Once the celebrating was over, Larkspring did as promised and took Spiderpaw out immediately. As they headed over rocks and towards the rivers that sprung off from the lake, he said, “Here is what we are going to do. We are going to hunt at these rivers until we have four pieces of prey. You’ll learn how to fish and I’ll correct you as you attempt. When we’re finished, I’m going to show you how to battle. This is still foreign land to us, and so who knows what sort of predators are lurking around; you have to be prepared for battle at all times. Normally I would be showing you the territories for your first day out, but we don’t have territories like we did back home.”
They arrived at the rivers and Larkspring sat down at the edge and waited for Spiderpaw to do the same. “I’ll show you how to catch a fish and then you will try. It is growing closer to leafbare, where the water will start to ice over, so we’ll learn to hunt for land prey when the rivers become impossible to fish at. For now, we need as much prey as we can for the clan.”
With his lecture finally finished, Larkspring peered into the water and waited with a claws paw raised. Once he saw the glint of scales, he lashed forward to try and grab it. His claw easily hooked into the fish’s flesh and he almost tossed it back up onto the bank. It flopped for a minute until it finally grew still. “There, just like that. Now you try.”
Larkspring tried to catch a fish and was successful! -3SP.

“Small but mighty.”
Despite her previous annoyance with Larkspring, she wasn't going to let anything damper her mood. She was finally an apprentice. And she didn't have to wait more than a few moments for her training to begin. Her mentor seemed as ready as she was to get going. She took in her surroundings, observing for the first time the area outside of their makeshift camp. She'd seen it passing by but hadn't been focused on the territory. Now, she saw it as a place for her to learn the skills that would carry her to renown, as the greatest warrior of all time! Or something like that. She tried to keep her ambitions in check, but daydreaming about a grand future was so much fun. As they stopped and sat, she turned towards him, clinging to his every word. She still found him bossy, but she didn't mind as much.
It was a little jarring to be pushed right into a demonstration, but she tried to focus the best she could on his technique as he caught a fish. He made it seem pretty easy, and she felt fairly confident that she could mimic his actions. She nodded, taking in a small breath as she peered into the river, waiting to spot her prey. As a fish caught her eye, she tried to do just as her mentor had done and struck into the water with her paw. To her delight, she was able to pierce the fish's scales with her claw and pull it out of the water. A grin spread across her face as she let it drop to the ground. It was a thrilling experience, and she was filled with pride not only knowing that she was a capable hunter, but that she was providing for her clan.

Larkspring watched Spiderpaw carefully as she leaned over the water and attempted her own catch. He was ready to snatch her if she leaned too far and tumbled in, but she seemed to have a grasp of her own balance. Better than that, she caught a fish herself.
“Good,” Larkspring meowed with a singular nod. “You are already getting the hang of it. If you hook your paw a little more, you can scoop it out of the water in a singular motion and have less risk of dropping your prey—but not a bad start. We have half the prey I want us to take back, so let’s fetch the other two.”
He looked back at the water, preparing his paw and waiting for the next glimpse of fish in the water. His claw caught the fish easily and he demonstrated what he told Spiderpaw about: his paw scooped into the water, hooked the fish, and then tossed it out onto the shore in a fluid motion.
“There. Now you.”
Larkspring attempted to catch a fish and was successful! -3SP.

The praise from her mentor filled Spiderpaw with a warm feeling, deep in the pit of her chest. She liked being good at things. She'd caught a fish on her first try and was being recognized for it. Maybe this whole training thing was going to be even better than she imagined. She just hoped she could keep up with the luck she'd been having so far. Despite her pride, she listened to Larkspring as he instructed her further, and nodded. "Got it." she replied, her determined eyes shifting from his own back to the lake. She leaned over the gently lapping water, waiting to spot another piece of prey. This time took a little bit longer, and she felt slightly discouraged as she peered into the lake. Come on, she thought to herself, urging another fish to come into her view.
After a few more moments, it seemed her urging had worked. She spotted another fish, this one slightly larger than the last. She tried to channel Larkspring's teachings, hooking her paw even further as she reached out towards it. She was able to latch onto it quickly and flicked it onto the shore. It was less smooth than her mentor's demonstration, but she grasped the concept of it. Now that they had caught all four fish, she turned towards him, waiting to hear what they would do next.

When Spiderpaw scooped up the fish, Larkspring’s ears perked up. That was just about perfect for a beginner. If Spiderpaw was this good at it, she would be a great hunter with more practice. He let his features relax and he nodded. “You’re a natural, it seems. Good job. We’ll leave these fish to dry here and start on battle training.”
He led her a few paces away. They had plenty of room to move around. He turned towards her and stretched. “Now during spars, you will use no teeth or claws. You can certainly use them against predators or enemy cats. Right now I’m going to teach you the simplest moves so you can be prepared if you ever have to fight.”
Larkspring stood tall for a moment and then crouched defensively. “Come at me like you are trying to fight me. Hit me with your paw or bite me. I need to see how quickly you move.”

Spiderpaw was very evidently proud of herself. She liked being able to do things well, especially as a beginner. When it took longer for her to learn, she had a tendency to grow frustrated. She wasn't a very patient cat, and she occasionally possessed too much confidence in her abilities. She figured she had the right to boast just a little bit about her accomplishments. She would save that for later, however, as there was still work to be done. They would be heading back to camp soon. Now, it was time to try and fight. Still excited from her successful hunting, Spiderpaw grinned toothily, following Larkspring and listening to his instructions. With a sharp nod, she took a few paces back, preparing herself. Then she lunged forward, leaping towards the tom with a sheathed paw. She was still somewhat apprehensive and certainly didn't want to hurt her mentor too badly in a simple training session. She made contact with his side, then ducked away quickly, unsure if he would retaliate instantly. She tried to imitate the crouch he had started the spar in as she waited for his attack.
Spiderpaw used Front Paw Blow, dealing 4 damage and costing 5 stamina!

Larkspring took the quick whap from his apprentice and nodded.“Good,” he told her. It had a good amount of strength behind it, and he knew that if she had used claws, it would have left a good stinging, which is what you want against enemies. “Now be sure to be quick on your paws. See if you can dodge an attack that is coming to you.” To demonstrate, he swung his paw towards Spiderpaw. He didn’t slow down for her, and instead expected her to try and dodge it on her own instincts.
Larkspring used Front Paw Blow, dealing 6 damage and costing 5 SP.
