Hedgekit did not like this journey. She was too young to truly understand why they were leaving home. All she knew was that now they walked during the day when the sun was too bright; now they were surrounded by strange smells and loud voices and a hundred cats she didn't know; now there was no more comfortable nest, only Mamma Pine to keep her warm and safe. At least she still had her Mamma and her brothers. But lots of the time they were busy talking to someone else, and there was no time for her to play anymore...

It was making her miserable. Her internal clock still hadn't adjusted to being awake during the day. So when night came, no matter how exhausted she was, how much her ears drooped from tiredness, she still couldn't sleep. But a cursory glance around the enormous field full of sleeping cats showed that she wasn't the only one awake. Who... who was that cat counting all of the leaves? Curiosity grabbed hold of her. For a moment she considered awakening Fernkit to ask him to come with her, but he was snoring too loud. It was fine. She wouldn't go far... She just had to talk to someone. The tiny, dark-furred form of Hedgekit tiptoed around her sleeping mother and made her way up to the other she-cat, whose familiar ShadowClan smell also seemed a little extra bitter and, uh, leaf-y. Herbs? Was that what the she-cat was playing with? "Um... hello," she whispered shyly, hesitantly. "I'm Hedgekit. What... are you doing?"
