"L-Let all of those old enough to catch their own prey...Gather beneath Highrock for a clan meeting!"
The standard ceremonial call came out in a choked rush as Acornstem, for the first time in a while, stood upon the Highrock once more. Her tail swished, taking in a deep breath to steady herself. While she had no regrets on her choice to step down from her duties when she realizes her grief was overwhelming her - it still hadn't felt right. She had missed it, even if she knew she was unable to do them and it was best to remind her Clanmates that...It was okay to take time for themselves. So she had done it for herself - stepping back to process everything but finally she was feeling better - enough to try to do a ceremony again.
Already she could feel the pain rising in her chest - the apprentice ceremonies she was to oversee only served as a reminder that she had lost her first apprentice...Her son - even if they had only acknowledged the depth of their relationship heartbeats before his death... It wouldn't be as simple and easy as the previous ceremonies that had almost come so naturally to her but that was how grief worked - nothing would be the same again. ...But it didn't matter at this moment - shaking her head to drift away from the thoughts of grief. No, she had to focus on the moment at paw - on Sandkit, who was ready to join the others in the apprentice den.
Sandkit happily padded out of the nursery with a giant smile. She sat down next to all her friends and looked up at acornstem, excitement bubbling in her system.
Acornstem's found a smile crossing her muzzle at the sight of Sandkit, focusing on the moment to try to keep her thoughts away. It...It was such a silly thing for this to set her off - she had become deputy well after Cedarstalk had been appointed to her. He had been her apprentice, yes, and her first one at that but... She shook her head - no, no, she was trying not to focus on that. So she raised her head, clearing her throat. "I've called you all here...To witness a n-new apprentice be named," she meowed, trying to keep her voice to wavering too much.
"Sandkit, please step...Step forward," she managed, wincing a little at the pauses she would have to take - needing to take a small breath to keep herself focused. This was just a small thing so why couldn't she...No, she couldn't think like that. Grief was...Grief was weird. She straightened up, taking in a deep breath as Sandkit stepped forward before she continued on. "Sandkit, you have reached the age of six moons and...Are now old enough to be named an apprentice. From this moment on, you will be known as Sandpaw. Your mentor will be Firefly - she...She is a brave and strong cat and will teach you everything she knows," she meowed, glancing over at where her friend sat. Firefly had just lost an apprentice, this was true but with all of the apprentices that they were naming... She couldn't have a cat as great as Firefly sitting by without an apprentice to train - not when any apprentice would be lucky to have a mentor like her!
Bluekit watched his friend become an apprentice and once she had gotten her new name of sandpaw he started cheering happily. "Sandpaw!! Sandpaw!" he meowed

Today was finally the day. One of Aurelia's own kits was to become an apprentice, and the golden-spotted she-cat was a bundle of anxious nerves and mingled dread and excitement. She gave Sandkit's fur another swift lick, wanting the young kit to look respectable on what was an important day for her.
The clan was called together, and Acornstem called Sandkit forward. Aurelia watched from the entrance of the nursery as she was named Sandpaw, with Firefly as her mentor. A cat Aurelia had not interacted much with beyond when she initially joined the clan. The warrior had seemed competent though. She would be watching how her daughter was trained closely.
sandkit, now sandpaw, padded up to her mentor with a bounce in her step. She didnt understand much forest speak yet, slow compared to the other kits, but still tried her best to speak to her new mentor. "I. Will. Be. Good." she mewed sorta slowely trying to thing of how to say the words. She had a big grin and a sparkle in her eyes, happy that she said something.

Having just lost Shrewpaw barely moons before this, being assigned another so soon felt... Gross. But the praise she received from Acornstem - and a certain someone already ruining a new apprentices experience by refusing to mentor them - Firefly would not turn her away. Feral blood meant little to her. Blame the source, not the bloodline.
Dipping her head to touch her nose to the sandy apprentices head, she didn't spare a single word.
