No matter how your heart is grieving, if you keep on believing.

Thymepaw had been a mess recently. The fox attack had been her second taste of just how cruel the world could be, and she wasn't sure what she was going to do about it. Warriors were allowed to be afraid, but they had to push through it for the good of the Clan. She had no idea how long it was going to take for her to push past this one. It seemed as if the scene replayed in her mind whenever she closed her eyes to sleep at night. There had been so many horrific sights, from Whinchatpaw killing one of the foxes, to another one practically mangling her uncle, and not to mention having to see her denmates covered in blood from their enemies as well. It made Thymepaw feel sick. She had frozen halfway through the battle, and it had made her feel as useless as ever. There had been countless times when she had made attempts in her mind to justify her behavior to nobody but herself. She had barely known how to fight, and having to face off against foxes wasn't exactly the initial battle training that she had been hoping for. She had to force herself to be more prepared if she ever came up against a predator ever again.

The apprentices den provided shelter from the rain that poured overheard while thunder roared in the distance. Thymepaw wasn't necessarily afraid of rain. Most nights she would use it as a way to fall asleep by imagining just how many raindrops were hitting the ground, and silently counting how many heartbeats were between the lightning strikes and the booms of thunder. Tonight was much different. She had been on edge ever since the incident, and loud noises sent shivers down her spine. The apprentice was grateful when she realized that she was beginning to fall asleep, but her eyes flew open almost a moment later. A flash of lightning so bright illuminated the sky to the point that it almost seemed like daytime for a moment, before...

Boom.

Thunder comparable to the roar of multiple lions seemed to shake the entire camp. Thymepaw immediately sat up in her nest, blinking in shock. How kit-like was this? She was an apprentice, and here she was being startled over thunder. She began to wish that she had the will of the older warriors, and the ability to move on. She needed it now more than ever. She looked to her side before realizing that her tail had fallen on top of one of the other apprentices in the midst of her movement.

"Sorry..." She murmured, sweeping her tail to the side before sighing.
That was when she noticed that the rest of her denmates were beginning to stir, presumably awoken from the same intense thunder and lightning strike that had frightened her. At least she wasn't alone.

Bubblepaw usually looked forward to sleeping. It was when she had her nicest dreams--sunshine, multicolored sunsets, rippling streams full of stars, bright blue suns to chase endlessly across open skies, sprouting feathered wings and ascending until she could land on the moon. But lately... her dreams hadn't always been that nice. She would hear echoing snarls and desperate screams. She would see flashing white teeth, spurts of startlingly crimson blood, feel the same sick swirling in her stomach that made her want to run and throw up in a safe corner of the den. Her dad had been hurt. Her brother had been hurt. Her sisters had to drag her out to fight because she'd been such a coward. She should be better at this, she knew; the warrior oath would require her to defend her Clan with her life. But something about the blood and the angry growls and the high-pitched shrieks made her tremble in her nest every time it got too dark. And tonight was no exception.

She had barely managed to try drifting off into a fretful sleep when a loud clap of thunder, sounding eerily like a fox's snarl, roused her from the attempted rest. "Aaahh!" The scream was fairly quiet, but it was as high-pitched as it was strained. Bubblepaw sat straight up in her nest, sides heaving, green eyes flicking around wildly to find the source of the sound. It was only once she fully awoke from her half-stupor that she clocked the sound of rain pounding, and realized that it had been an overreaction. Ashamed, the small apprentice attempted to curl up into herself, and would have buried her face back in the softest part of her nest without bothering another cat if it hadn't been for the fact that she briefly caught another cat's eye. Thymepaw had woken up too. "Oh, i-it's all right," she murmured, feeling her ears twitch anxiously. Hopefully it wasn't her fault that the other apprentice was awake.

There was no greater challenge for the apprentice than sleep. Her body cried out for rest but it was impossible to calm her mind, to feel comfortable enough to let her eyes close for too long in the den that held her first experiences of battle. In the camp that their clan mates and family had been injured. Where their mother had left them once more. She had been acquainted with the jaws of a fox. It was all too much, all too real. She longed for the numbness she had felt after the initial attack; when the foxes had spilled into camp and her mind had turned quiet. The jaws of that forsaken fox had undone the spell, dragging her back into a reality she desperately wanted to escape.

A murmur not far from her paws stirred the apprentice from her thoughts, glancing towards Thymepaw. It was of some selfish comfort that Thymepaw was visibly uncomfortable; not because she wished the other apprentice ill, but so she felt less alone in her fears, both unable to sleep. Her eyes had felt as though they had remained wide since the attack. The foxes had attacked when some of the camp was still sleeping, a fact that concerned her greatly. They could be attack at any moment. Enemies did not discriminate.

The grey apprentice wasn’t a fool; she knew the final beast was dead, she had seen it slain before her by her brother like a true seasoned warrior, though it was no easier to settle with those images. Not when she knew so many more predators lurked beyond their borders and within them; how did they know that more wouldn’t appear, in a day, a week, a moon? The next time, would she be so weak?

Boom. Sorrelpaw flinched at the thunderous noise, ears pinning to her head. Why did these noises stir such a physical reaction from her? She sniffed as the rain bounced off the ground outside the den, her body flattening into her nest at the rumbling thunder. Her sister’s soft voice was a slight comfort as she spoke, though her words were filled with a familiar fear.

“You two can’t sleep, either?” She asked the pair quietly, “why does everything have to be so loud?” Sorrelpaw failed to disguise the anxious tone of her words, the image she had attempted to cultivate in the battle faltering between softly spoken words.
