Another morning, another dawn patrol. Greenleaf had reached its peak--as had its heat. If it weren't for the sun hiding behind Highstones at night, it would be practically unbearable just to wake up in the morning. As it was, the slight coolness of the breeze eddying off of the river was the only think keeping Perchstar stable as she made her way through the territory. Patrolling by the border of the river was, at least, somewhat easier than just padding through the vast sunbaked territory and searching for land prey. How did the other Clans stand it without water to cool themselves off? The usual dizziness beset the leader, but she ignored it, focusing instead on the gentle sound of the current rolling over smooth pebbles and silt. Once more she glanced behind her at her patrolmates. Two apprentices: one she knew very well, and one she knew very little. Both were likely nearing the completion of their apprenticeships. Her daughter, Willowpaw, was of course a cat that she was always glad to spend more time with. The silver tabby had been quiet so far this morning, but so had Perchstar. Dawn patrols normally called for a lull to fall over the participating cats, listening only to quiet river sounds and distant birdsong from the SkyClan forests across the border. The silence between them, however, was a comfortable one. She was less certain about Bubblepaw. Not because she had any reason to dislike the apprentice; she simply did not know much about her. All she knew was that she was the apprentice of another one of her daughters, Mistwalker, and that she had participated in the apprentice tournament a while back and done fairly well. Perhaps she could get to know her better on this patrol. For now, though, they were getting very close to the point of the border with SkyClan. As usual, Perchstar couldn't help but peer over into the thickly packed trees, some tiny part of her hoping to run into Birdstar.

Willowpaw
Willowpaw felt great this morning. The heat clung to her pelt, but even that was not enough to bother her. She got to enjoy a patrol with her mother, which was something of a luxury except for when Poppyshine’s whims deemed to place them together. Having a companion on the patrol did not even bother her, because she had spent a bit of time with Bubblepaw, especially at the recent gathering, and found her most agreeable.
The group walked together along the border. Willowpaw sniffed the air, smelling the slight SkyClan scent just beyond their border. She had not gotten acquainted with SkyClan cats, and wondered if they would come across any.
Willowpaw looked to her fellow apprentice. “How has your training been going with Mistwalker?” she asked. She did not get to speak with her sister often, and so wasn’t sure what she thought of her apprentices. She bet that Bubblepaw was a good apprentice to her, though.

All Hail RiverClan's Resident Pageant Queen
bubblepaw
Walk like a majestic lion, eyes glinting with so much desire.
Bubblepaw hadn't been opposed to joining the border patrol. She held constant curiosity about plenty of things, including RiverClan's borders. The past few Gatherings had given her the opportunity to bond with more of her Clanmates, but she hadn't had the chance to mingle with cats from the other Clans yet. SkyClan seemed to be kind enough. A small part of her hoped that they'd come across some today, just for introductions sake.
She had a slight smile on her face as she followed alongside Willowpaw and Perchstar, keeping her ears perked and her senses alert. "It's been fantastic, actually. Mistwalker is a great mentor. I couldn't ask for anyone better. What about you?" The apprentice was happy to engage in conversation with Willowpaw. She willingly ook any chances to talk to the other RiverClan apprentices, and from what she knew about Willowpaw from the previous Gathering, the she-cat was nice company.
Pour more gasoline on fire, fly again, rising through the flames.
The heat was especially annoying to Foxtrot, he was still recovering from the fox attack, his sister had barely let him out on the dawn patrol this morning. The tom took it slow, walking at a snail's pace compared to his patrolmates.
While he still wasn't permitted to treefly, the tom had found comfort in just being out of the stuffy medicine den. He craved being in the woods and the Riverclan border was always nice. The wind that passed over the river was always cooler and it was nice against the heat. As he neared the River he spotted quickly spotted the Riverclanners and his tail flicked excitedly.
"Yoo-hoo!!" he called waving his tail and paw at the three. As he stepped closer, the tom recognized Perchstar, but not the other two she-cats. Interrupting the quiet that Perchstar had found comfort in, the tom gave them a bright smile, "A fine mornin' for a walk, eh?" he called out over the sounds of the river and nearby birds.

Birdstar
The heat of green-leaf only strengthened as the season latened, burning even over the early hours of dawn. Birdstar's tail swept slowly back and forth, a minor expression of her annoyance toward it. Her coat was long and dense, and it trapped every ounce of warmth the sun gave. It would be a blessing when leaf-bare's snows and ice came again; for now, Birdstar quietly cursed her pelt, weighing down her sturdy frame and sapping any energy she may have had for the day. She had been tired enough recently without the heat's assistance.
But exhaustion wasn't a good enough reason to forego her duties once she'd managed to get to her paws. An early patrol with Foxtrot. His company was surprisingly welcome for the morning; bright again already, so shortly after the wounds he'd earned from those cursed foxes. They rarely spoke, but Birdstar was fond of him. She watched him as they walked nearer to the river, wondering if she ought to offer commendation for his efforts in defending the Clan when he perked up, interest clearly caught by something. Birdstar lifted her head, ears turning toward the sound of approaching chatter.
Her eyes fell on the RiverClan patrol as Foxtrot called out to them. Perchstar-- the sight of which brought both relief and a spike in nerves --accompanied by a pair of apprentices Birdstar didn't recognize. She stepped forward to join Foxtrot in standing at the river's edge and bowed her head to the opposite patrol. "Hello," she said evenly. Turning her attention more directly to Perchstar, she tipped her head and continued, "It's good to see you outside of the Gathering. Is RiverClan well?"

Perchstar couldn't help but feel a subtle glow of pride when she heard Willowpaw's voice pipe up over the comfortable silence. The leader herself had taken ages to learn how to engage in small-talk, and certainly had not been adequate at it during her apprenticeship. But be it due to a more straightforward personality, better support from her siblings, or kinder surroundings, Willowpaw had blossomed. The query was simple, but a good conversation-starter. Bubblepaw responded enthusiastically in kind. It caused another gentle twinge to her heart when the other apprentice mentioned that Mistwalker was a wonderful mentor. Her daughters were both such amazing cats... she loved them more than anything. They, Tinyshadow, and Wrenpaw were her pride and joy. Joy... what an odd concept. How strange that the idea of happiness had escaped her for so long, and yet she found herself closest to it when she spent time with her kits.
She would have been content to simply continue walking at the head of the patrol, listening to Willowpaw and Bubblepaw exchange pleasant conversation, but it seemed that they were not the only cats patrolling this morning. Just as sunlight filtered through the oak trees on the other side of the riverbend, the shadows of two cats crossed the RiverClan patrol's path. The first was a tom, a warrior that Perchstar did not recognize, save that she might have spotted his face once or twice at Gatherings. He was limping and appeared somewhat injured, yet his greeting was warm and welcoming. Briefly Perchstar considered the irony of the fact that their Clans had been at each others' throats what seemed like mere moons ago. However, she didn't have long to contemplate. The second figure was far more recognizable. It appeared that the cat she always found herself subconsciously wanting to run into across the border had answered her silent summons at last. Birdstar stood on the other end of the river, dipping her head in a familiar gesture.
Perchstar did not smile. It was rare that her face made any expression other than the neutral presence that she had been affecting for so long it had become part of her. However, there was an openness to the way that the leader halted her pace and swept to the side. Her ice-blue eyes seemed less cold than usual as she offered the SkyClan cats a slow blink. "Greetings," she responded, tone straightforward as ever. "Yes, RiverClan fares well. Greenleaf has been good to us. What of SkyClan? And... how are you? I feel that we seldom get to talk, being busy as we are, but it is always good to share your company." Though the words felt sparse compared to the bright way that the other tom had greeted them, they carried a sincerity that spoke volumes. Perchstar had recently realized that she truly did enjoy spending time with Birdstar, though they rarely saw much of each other except at Gatherings. It took a moment to remember that others were there. She glanced down at Willowpaw and Bubblepaw. Some part of her wished to introduce her daughter--likely the same part that had been proud of the conversation earlier. However, she knew that it would be best and politest for them to introduce themselves. She nodded at the two, indicating that they were free to do so.

Willowpaw
Willowpaw listened to Bubblepaw as she talked about her sister, and she nodded along. “Stormdance is my mentor, and he has been wonderful. I have learned a lot under his tutelage.” She was grateful to have one of the more senior warriors as her mentor. Sometimes she still felt a prick of jealousy and longing for her mother to be her mentor instead, but she was still happy with Stormdance. It wouldn’t be long before she was a warrior anyway, and then she would be the one doing the mentoring anyway.
She looked up when a voice called out across the water. Willowpaw stood to tall attention at the sight of a new cat. SkyClan, she guessed, because she thought she had seen him at a previous Gathering with other SkyClan cats. That was not all, though, as none other than Birdstar appeared from the brush too. Willowpaw felt a brief jolt run through her body and she resisted the urge to hide behind her mother. Small conversations didn’t usually intimidate her, but she feared messing anything up for her mother by saying the wrong thing to the leader of another clan.
Still, she would not be a meek mouse who would not acknowledge their new company. Willowpaw took a breath and, after her mother spoke, she added, “It is nice to see you both, but I do not think I’ve acquainted with either of you. I am Willowpaw.” She offered a polite blink at the both of them.

Bubblepaw listened with a smile. The small talk was peaceful, but it was interrupted by a voice on the other side of the river. The apprentice perked her head up, blinking in slight surprise before realizing there was nothing to worry about. She stood by curiously as the older cats exchanged words for a moment before Willowpaw took the step to introduce herself. Ah, of course. She had completely forgotten that introductions were necessary. Once her denmate was finished, the she-cat nodded kindly toward the SkyClan patrol.
"Hi, I'm Bubblepaw. It's nice to meet you both." She said with a gentle flick of her tail. She recognized one of them, Birdstar, from seeing the leaders on top of the Great Rock during Gatherings. She had never seen the other before, though. Nonetheless, there was no downside to knowing more cats of the forest.
