Birdstar
Once she was steady enough to walk without leaning too much of her weight against Wolfblossom, Birdstar crossed the border drawn by the Fallen Oak. Some nagging voice hissed at her for being a hypocrite, traipsing blatantly across the borders to march through ThunderClan’s rugged, bramble-strewn wood. She dismissed the stubborn thought with a stiff shake of her head every time it came.
This was different than a prophecy they could not know how to follow (that had been solved-- that she still had mixed feelings over). This was a murder. Her own life taken, by a warrior she’d once been responsible for; by her kin. To sit placidly at the border, awaiting a patrol that may have been hours away while Trufflesnap was free to roam the territories… Birdstar couldn’t allow it. The risk to her family and her Clan was too great. She was not blind to the risk posed upon her allies, as well. Mottlestar would have to forgive her for the trespass later.
Birdstar said little over the course of their trek. In silence, she followed the trail of blood Trufflesnap had graciously left for them until it grew too thin and scattered to properly track. From there, she allowed her nose and ears to guide them, tracing the dying scents of early morning patrols, the familiar rhythm of patrols moving in the distance.

Wolfblossom silently stalked at Birdstar's side, head high and shoulders squared. Her sister's pelt was still bloody, some of that blood had made it onto Wolfblossom's fur when she'd leaned on her, but Birdstar was walking on her own now, and Wolfblossom resisted the urge to shepherd her back to Skyclan's own medicine den. This needed to be done, and hey would present a united front to this clan who harbored such a murderer among them... Not their first murderer. Not the first to murder a cat within their family, even. It filled Wolfblossom with anger on their behalf, that their neighbors seemed to not even know their clanmates... But today they would know. Trufflesnap would be brought to justice before she could do anything else.
Thunderclan territory was filled with thick undergrowth and brambles and trees that were closer together. She took in every detail she could as they walked in relative silence, following a trail of blood that slowly grew thinner the farther the two went. Eventually it faded entirely, but they continued on.
Wolfblossom hoped that this would be the last time she ever had to set paw on another clan's territory in this manner. She wasn't naive enough to think it would be, but she could hope... Right?
Silently the pair walked, trailing the staler scents of morning patrols deeper into Thunderclan territory. A ravine was in the distance, distinct against the trees and the rest of the forest terrain. Slowly, the scent of the other forest-dwelling clan grew stronger. "There, I think." She murmured softly to Birdstar.

Birdstar
The heart of ThunderClan's territory was unfamiliar, but with Wolfblossom steady at her side, they found their way. The sun was starting to sink when Wolfblossom pointed out the nestled hollow, far edges of the fading sky turned a burnt amber. Drawing to a brief halt, Birdstar nodded once and squared her own shoulders, holding herself tall despite the way it pulled at her fraying muscles. Softly, "I hope you're prepared for this. I... hope we both are. I'm sorry." Her mew was low, scratchy with strain and with a thick muddle of emotions she couldn't completely bury.
Before any hesitance could overtake her, Birdstar moved to approach the veiled camp. She dipped her head to the evening guards, allowing them a heartbeat to race through the thorn tunnel and announce their arrival before she shoved through on her own. Birdstar hadn't bothered to clean the blood from her before departing. It made a point, she'd thought. And-- frankly, she only had the energy for so much.
Haggard, with a collar of teeth marks wreathing her neck and blood dried brown painting the white fur around them, SkyClan's leader entered ThunderClan's camp camp, her deputy close behind.
The urge to shout for Mottlestar was strong. Instead, she sucked in a deep breath, leaned into the foggy sense of composure that enveloped her rather than the anger that seared underneath everything else. Sparing a silent look at Wolfblossom, Birdstar lashed her tail once and sought the nearest warrior. In a gravely snap that brooked no argument, "Bring Mottlestar to us. Now."

Mottlestar
“May the stars light our paths.”
Certain days held a timbre to them that foretold of good. Of warmth that would be absorbed and enjoyed with little to worry about in turn, that promised bliss and peace. Others told of a different story, of the days that gnawed at the belly. That a shadow loomed just beyond the next bend, one that would attack and bite. Those were the days that she dreaded the most, as it felt like her Clan had been swarmed in them. Attack after attack, bloodied and bruised and battered yet still fought for more. Unfortunately... It was one of those days that the tortoiseshell couldn't exactly tell just what was on the horizon. She hoped for good, but the track record of recent time told her otherwise.
The disappearance of her daughter had been on the forefront of her mind, distracting her from much else of what she could do. Nobody had been able to recount just where Murkyripple had gone, and her disappearance was more than unsettling. The permanent night sentry of Thunderclan didn't simply vanish, and the fact that not even Thrushnose had an idea as to what had occurred was even more disturbing.
Drifting in that void-like state, the small molly had milled about her camp. It was easy for her to discuss matters with her warriors, to usher them on patrols, to take in reports on findings. Thankfully, the Skyclan and Riverclan borders had seen nothing but peace. Sunningrocks became a place to share stories between Clans, and her clanmates were respecting the request to not use it as hunting grounds. Certainly much better news for her to receive than the close skrimishes she had persistently been told about, ones that had her nervous for some sort of battle that she would have to lead her clanmates into. A battle that not all of them would survive. Shaking her head once to dismiss that cloudy gloom, she had allowed herself to enjoy the moment of conversation.
That changed as one of her senior warriors came, pressing their nose to the back of her head in a silent sign that it was urgent. Pardoning herself from conversation, one glance towards the entrance of the camp was all she needed to know about the day.
It was another shadow, coming to bite and claw at Thunderclan, to drag it into the depths.
Immediately, her gaze narrowed, and she closed whatever distance remained between herself and the Skyclan leader who was of certain opposite. While Mottlestar seemed healthy and tiny, Birdstar was... obviously unwell and grand. An interesting opposite. One that didn't matter in the moment as she then looked at the cat who accompanied her... Wolfblossom.
"...This cannot be good. ... Follow me." Grave concern filled the tone of the leader as she nodded towards her den. A glance around camp didn't give her sight of her deputy, the friendly face that she could usually spot so easily. "Someone fetch Acornstem for me, to my den. ... And Fawnshine, or Echosong." Mottlestar spoke to no cat in particular, but could hear the scrambling of paws. If both leader and deputy were here from Skyclan? Leader and deputy would represent the rumbling Thunder. One that she wished would simply silence itself for a few moons.
Finding comfort in the dimly-lit shade of her den, it was instinct for Mottlestar to guide Birdstar towards her nest. "You lost a life. Lay." Pure motherly instinct riddled her tone, one that had hardly any tolerance for resistance. It was a peculiar sight for such a small feline to be seeming to order Birdstar around, but she was a leader herself. She knew that look, and she knew better. It wasn't until Birdstar had at least settled herself somewhat that the molly could actually focus on what exactly was going on.

Acornstem had been in the midst of the warrior's den - busy chatting with a few warriors who lingered who hadn't been assigned to a patrol. It wasn't hard to hear the voices - familiar...Who shouldn't be here. She turned, ears perked as she could hear Mottlestar's voice faintly - already speaking with their unexpected guests before she turned to properly finish her conversation. She wasn't just about to walk out on the warriors but did very quickly end it with a notice that she would seek to continue it later - it was important to know how the apprentices were doing in their mentor's eyes, after all.
She wasted no time exiting the den, her mouth opening to take the air which quickly confirmed that she hadn't misheard the voice. Birdstar, here...? With Wolfblossom as well. A voice caught her ear - one of the warriors in the clearing directing her to join the group in Mottlestar's den. With a thankful nod, she wasted no time - fur prickling as she realized there was a scent of blood. Something had happened...And her heart sank with the feeling that it was nothing good. Pushing her way into the den, she gave a nod to Mottlestar before turning to look at the two SkyClan cats. "I'm here - are you...?" she cut herself off, making a soft face. "...I'm sorry - the answer to that is obvious," she sighed with a shake of her head - it was clear that Birdstar was not okay. Taking a seat next to her leader, she curled her tail around her paws with a concerned expression.
Nothing good would draw the two to their camp with Birdstar in that state if it wasn't urgent... But it clearly wasn't an obvious threat - like a dog or fox on their tail or there would have been more of a warning about that, she assumes. So why...? She gave Mottlestar a nervous look, waiting for Fawnshine and/or Echosong to join them to give the hurt leader a lookover.
Echosong was speaking with a patient within the medicine den when he heard someone enter the tunnel and call out for him.
Needed in Mottlestar's den? Echosong didn't waste anytime, he grasped the leaf bundle containing all of the basic healing herbs for any situation and sprinted from the fern tunnel. Tail high in the air he pushed into the den, eyes blinking in surprise as he saw the state of Birdstar.
The tom nodded in greeting to Mottlestar and Wolfblossom and amicably flicked Acornstem with the tip of his tail but didn't hesitate to approach Birdstar and begin administering first aid. It took him a moment to survey the injuries and once he made up his mind he pulled the necessary herbs from the bundle. The tom quickly ducked out of the den to retrieve a damp piece of moss from the cracks in the medicine den before returning to the leader's den. He carefully placed the damp moss onto the pelt of the large molly and wiped away as much blood as he could so he could take a closer look at the injuries. Echosong's brow furrowed and he made a soft 'tsk' noise as he got to work he chose to use horsetail. The spiky plant often found in marshy areas was known for being a good solution to treat any incoming infections and also stopped the bleeding in minor wounds. The tom quickly chewed the stems and pushed them into the wounds with soft paws then wrapped them in cobwebs wherever he found cuts.
The medicine cat didn't fail to notice the wounds while he healed the leader. Their shape were distinctly feline - he had seen enough teeth and claw marks from predators and cats alike, he knew the marks of a cat when he saw them. He hesitated to ask the question that would answer Acornstem's thoughts. "Who?" he asked simply. The tom had goosebumps as he waited for an answer. He dreaded the Skyclan leader uttering the name of a Thunderclanner. They had had enough murder in their clan, if another surfaced, he wondered how Thunderclan would look to the rest of the forest.
Echosong finished his work and pushed two poppyseeds towards Birdstar, in case she may need it. The pain of dying was unknown to him but from the look on Birdstar's face, if it were him he would take the poppyseeds. He wanted to suggest Birdstar wait until she was fully healed to move but knowing her he knew she would want to get home to her own clan as soon as possible, so instead he gave her a knowing look and sat close next to Acornstem, waiting for Birdstar to speak.

Fawn shine
And did the twin flame bruise paint you blue?
"So you were never a saint and I've loved in shades of wrong. We learn to live with the pain, mosaic broken hearts."
StarClan was cruel. As if the fact that they only have just recently discovered the hidden murderer harboring beneath their safe havens hasn't been enough, there always seemed to be more fuel to add to the fire in hopes of relinquishing their clan's already damaged reputation. When it was notified to Fawnshine that she, and/or Echosong were required in Mottlestar's den, a wave of uncertainty formed in the pits of her stomach; just waiting until she was close enough to be lured in and engulfed in its trap of self-doubt.
She hurried over beside her apprentice, eyes narrowing in alarm at the sight of both of Skyclan's high ranks; Birdstar and Wolfblossom, huddled together in the den. Their clan leader had gotten injured, and all signs of evidence pointed to a fellow cat attack. But from who? And when? She knew it was too naive to have hoped Thunderclan wouldn't be involved in this—but had they not, the deputy and leader wouldn't have ever likely gone here in the first place. They could've gone straight to Smokepetal for aid. And the fact that they were here, requiring Mottlestar's presence was most unnerving of all.
Frustration burned in her veins, only partially eased to see Echosong's knowledge and skills in herbology being put to the test. He'd grown to fit the new name and title she'd given him not too long ago, even if that wasn't the main point of focus in their current emergency. The tom had treated Skyclan's leader well enough to have Fawnshine look over his treatment with an approving nod, leaving her with nothing more needed to be done. Sitting beside Mottlestar, she frowned, her gaze intent on listening to Birdstar's explanation of what had happened. It wouldn't be too surprising to hear the name of a Thunderclanner mentioned, even if she'd much prefer not to let that theory come to reality.

"Yeah... Me too." Wolfblossom murmured quietly. Wolfblossom shook her head, falling silent once more as they made their way down the ravine and into camp. Birdstar practically barked orders at the first Thunderclanner she saw to fetch Mottlestar, and as they waited, Wolfblossom gazed furtively around their camp. Looking for a familiar patchy pelt... And making note of where things were. Her gaze landed on Mottlestar's small frame as she approached, stating the obvious and inviting them to speak. What gave it away, the blood staining my sister's pelt? She thought sourly, all at once not wanting to deal with words. But her claws remained sheathed, and her face remained of the mind numbing rage that simmered beneath the surface. With Trufflesnap, she was reasonably sure that Mottlestar could not have known. And this would not be a murder that took nearly a year to come to light.
The ease with which Mottlestar assessed Birdstar's condition made the deputy want to bristle, fighting to keep her fur flat. They had walked into the lion's den, just the two of them, and Wolfblossom half wished to grab Birdstar by the scruff and drag her back to Skyclan's medicine den once more, where no tenuous allies could pry at her injuries or bear witness to how their family that she'd tried so hard to keep together seemed to crumble before her like sand.
Medicine cats were called for, as was the Thunderclan deputy, and Wolfblossom stood silently at Birdstar's side. Acornstem was the first of the summoned cats to arrive, and Wolfblossom attempted a tight smile in greeting... A smile that turned into more of a grimace. Two cats smelling of herbs arrived in short succession. She recognized Fawnshine, though the tom was younger, and she couldn't recall his name. Mottlestar must've said it, but it slipped away. There was only one name that she cared to remember right now.
The deputy took a slow breath as Mottlestar inquired as to what was wrong, and exhaled.
The den felt crowded with two medicine cats and Acornstem now also occupying it, and Wolfblossom did not move from her sister's side, watching as the younger of the two medicine cats attempted to clear the wound with wet moss and apply herbs to it. It should have been Plumleaf and Smokepetal tending to Birdstar, not the medicine cats of another clan.
"Trufflesnap." The name fell between them and settled, as if it were a viper with fangs bared. Threatening to strike at the heart with more venom than Wolfblossom could take. "By the time I found Bird, she was gone." The words tasted like ashes on her tongue, bitter and unpleasant. Their sister... Wolfblossom wasn't sure that Truffle had truly been. Could a sibling have done what Trufflesnap had? She knew the answer to that, knew the stories that Bloodstrike had shared, those that Beechfang did not speak of. Wolfblossom thought she might have an understanding of why now, different to the one she'd had before.
She fell silent, waiting for the Thunderclanners to react to her words, for Birdstar tocontinue, and make the demand that Wolfblossom could not bring herself to say. A demand that could send their alliance tumbling into the depths of the river, or be met with hostility just as the same demand against their own mother had been met with, once. Wolfblossom wondered where things would fall this time.

Birdstar
Mottlestar wasn’t long to heed her summons. Birdstar pulled her gaze away from examining their surroundings to incline her head in a stiff nod toward the tortoiseshell’s appearance. “No. It isn’t.” She agreed curtly before padding after Mottlestar toward her den. Her ears flattened when she brushed through the lichen curtain, pride joining the din in her heart with a roar against simply being perceived, offered kindness; instructed. The same agitation rolled off Wolfblossom’s pelt. Birdstar thought to protest, especially when the pair of medicine cats arrived swiftly on the heels of the deputy, but she slowly forced herself into a sit and allowed the younger medicine cat to press moss and poultice to her without curling her lips.
Questions came to her, though Wolfblossom was the one to answer them. Birdstar flicked her tail gently against her sister’s flank in a gesture of appreciation and comfort. Sighing, she sat up straighter and squared her shoulders. “She attacked me at the Fallen Oak. I believe she was waiting for me.” Damp hackles rose at the thought, and Birdstar’s stomach turned. She wasn’t sure how many times she’d come close to retching that day. “Trufflesnap, she spoke so… finally. She said she knew this would come; that she has known for seasons. She called this violence a prophecy.” She was far from the most faithful, frustrated with StarClan more often than not, but she could not deny their reality nor the presence they had offered her. It felt another personal blow, to disparage the power of their ancestors when it was their heartbeats that carried their paws.
“And just as she knew she would take my life, she knew what would follow.” Birdstar’s eyes closed and the muscles in her jaw worked, tight and loose and tight again. “Trufflesnap knew I would come here when I awoke. Banishment or blood.” She couldn’t believe the words she would next have to say. She couldn’t chase memories of the nursery from her mind, of wrestling Trufflekit; smiling, laughing. The static hollowness awoke and spread through her again, muting the anguish that threatened to swallow her heart. Trufflesnap was not her sister; she was not Birdstar. She could not be, if she were to see this through.
She was only SkyClan’s leader. A figure; a title; a symbol. A sharp breath released and her eyes opened again, glistening and intent. Her gaze swept to Wolfblossom-- searching for what, she was not sure --before shifting to settle squarely on Mottlestar. “Simple exile will not protect my Clanmates, nor yours, and I will not allow SkyClan’s safety nor reputation to be hollowed by a malignant rogue. Not again. Not under my name.” Her voice was slow, distant; hollow. Her tail lashed once behind her. “We come asking for Trufflesnap’s life. I do not intend to leave without it.”

And Trufflesnap's life she would have. For Birdstar was not wrong - Trufflesnap knew exactly what came next after her attack. The swiftness of it all did not even shock her either. When she strode back into camp, her pelt cleaned of Birdstar's blood and almost shimmering with etherealness where her white was, she was ready to meet the end of the line. Whispers met her in camp like an old friend and she knew her sister was already here, in Mottlestar's den. The she-cat casually looked for Beetleshade, hoping the she-cat was around camp but unable to find her. For the first time that day, sadness tug at her chest a little. This was unfair to Beetleshade, but, knowing whom she loved... Perhaps they could meet again in the Dark Forest. For now, however, she would have to depart without a goodbye. She didn't call out for her sister as she settled in the center of camp in view of Mottlestar's den, although currently disrupted by the lichen. Instead, she waited and soaked in the rays of warm sun while she could.
Because, after all, in a few moments she'd be consumed in darkness.
"When there's nothing left to burn, you have to set yourself on fire."

Mottlestar
“May the stars light our paths.”
With the news that was delivered, it would be a lie if the tortoiseshell said her head didn't spin. It hadn't been that long ago that she was calling for Starlingflare's execution under the news delivered by Shadowclan's medicine cat, and now here she was, having another life-debt called in by Skyclan. Truth be told, there was a ripple of even greater frustration when it came to this one. The fact that Trufflesnap had seemed so happy to live within Thunderclan's walls, to be able to live out her life with Beetleshade. On top of it, the simple reality that she had gone to kill her own sister... the friend Mottlestar had built an alliance with.
Her gaze slid from Birdstar to her medicine cats, to Acornstem. She knew exactly what the answer to this was, and it was one that hurt her heart. Made her feel heavy. "Fawnshine, Echosong, thank you. ... Acornstem... fetch her, please."
There was truly no need for the steel that Birdstar glanced towards her with, and her amber eyes would lock in the reflecting pools of green that displayed a similar sharp edge. "Thunderclan allowed a murderer to walk too long once. News of this calls for execution-it breaks the code in needless taking of life, and is a treason against my Clan as well as yours and our alliance." She spoke sharply, with a grim tone that hardly ever seemed to ebb from her tongue. For just the briefest of moments, her mind flashed to Nightstalker. Perhaps the former leader of Shadowclan had rubbed off on her a bit. Flicking her tail to dismiss the thoughts that stormed her mind, she sat up just a bit straighter.
"Do you wish to be the one to take her life, Birdstar? Or shall I?" A question she wished she never had to ask. The weight of it certainly showed in how she sat, struggling to stand tall against it.

Acornstem's breath was caught in her throat at the reveal, claws sinking into the ground as parts of her screamed to object - that not another one of her Clanmates were... Her ears slicked back however as she held her tongue, knowing this was not something that the two were claiming lightly. Trufflesnap was Birdstar's sister so if the leader was claiming it was by her claws... She didn't want to believe it - she...She suppose she always wanted to think the best of her Clanmates and she couldn't wrap her head around it. What would drive Trufflesnap to do such a vile thing...?
Her ears perked as Mottlestar spoke her name, attention quickly turning onto the leader before the words sink in. ...Oh. Well...She suppose she should have expected that Mottlestar wouldn't allow this to stand, as the leader noting that this wasn't the first murderer in their Clan. How many...? How many of her Clanmates were...? She pushed herself to her paws, taking in a deep breath as she tried to keep her voice from shaking. "Of course, Mottlestar," she managed - her voice soft and fragile as she turned and pushed herself from the den and into the camp clearing.
It wasn't hard to locate Trufflesnap - preening in the sunlight like she was. Stars, the she-cat seemed pleased with herself as if the blood that had stained her claws meant nothing. Was...Was she truly that lost...? She shook her head, straightening up - trying to look as a deputy should even if she wanted to curl into her nest and lament what was about to happen - she had heard Mottlestar's question to the leader. There was no doubt about it, what was going to happen to their Clanmate. But...I-It was for the best, she suppose. If they let her stay - or even alive in exile - who knew if anybody else would...
"Trufflesnap - to the leader's den, please," she meowed, her voice hollow as she crossed the clearing to stand before the sunning she-cat. Trufflesnap had truly accepted the pit she had dug for herself, hadn't she? I-It wouldn't make watching what come next any easier but...Acornstem was deputy - and one day would become leader if the Stars willed. She...She had to get used to hard choices and their aftermath.

Trufflesnap rose, her eyes locked on Acornstem with a smirk to her maw. So this is how Birdstar wanted to play this. Was she so cowardly, so embarrassed to have been murdered by her own sister that she wanted to hide it. Pathetic. The molly took her time walking to her execution, a nagging part of her hoping Beetleshade would appear in these final moments for one last goodbye... Whispers had said Wolfblossom was here as well. It hadn't occurred to her before today when she was taking Birdstar's life that Wolfblossom would have been a more favorable target. It would be more painful. But perhaps she was doing StarClan's bidding, as her sister presented herself like a mouse chewing on a nut. Trufflesnap had nothing left to lose. This was it, her final moments. Perhaps she could take Wolfblossom down with her.
The lichen rubbed against her fur in a silky slide as she entered the dim light of the leader's den. She had not actually been in here yet, but it appeared it'd be her final stand and her blood would forever stain the dirt Mottlestar slept on. Her essence would live on in here.
Eyes peered at her with their hard stares as the speckled light caught them. Birdstar's. Wolfblossom's. Mottlestar's. The medicine cats. Such a large crowd, but such a small one from the same time. "Greetings sisters. ThunderClan treating you well?" she sang in a singsong voice, casually sitting and wrapping her tails around her paws.

Birdstar's response was the right one, Wolfblossom knew deep down. That did not mean that it sat well with her, but however much she disliked the thought... "Yours is not the only clan who has felt the sting of letting a murderer walk. Our elder clanmates know those stories all too well." She acknowledged the leader with a grim nod as Acornstem was sent to fetch Trufflesnap. Their sister. Their own sister. Wolfblossom closed her eyes, taking a slow breath. "I would be against this... But she has shown willingness to take the lives of her own family." That did not inspire confidence that it wouldn't happen again, and the story Birdstar told, of her waiting and that she believed in it so utterly... Wolfblossom could only resign herself to the inevitable, and hope that their father up in Starclan wouldn't hate them for it. And their mother back at camp... She was not looking forward to that conversation at all, but they needed to take this one step at a time.
Mottlestar's question of who should deal the consequences was one Wolfblossom found as utterly abhorrent as it was necessary. Selfishly, she would rather the blood be on Mottlestar's paws and not her sister's directly... But that was not her call to make. She would leave it between the leaders. She was simply here to support Birdstar and make sure her own family and clan were safe. Family, the thought filled her with bitter regret. Trufflesnap had been that. She was still that to Wolfblossom, no matter how she tried to deny it.
Trufflesnap finally entered the den, and Wolfblossom met the now-Thunderclanner's eyes with her own disappointed gaze. "Our parents raised us better than this," She wanted to say, but had they really? Their own mother was a murderer, but she had tried so hard to impart on her kits that such was no path to walk. Trufflesnap hadn't gotten that lecture, clearly. Or had chosen to ignore it. She didn't trust herself to speak, so instead, Wolfblossom held her silence, her expression one of stony disappointment and regret as she gazed at the cat who shared her blood.
