Poppyshine
As promised, when the early morning came, Poppyshine went to the apprentice den. Some other early-rising warriors had already retrieved their apprentice, and Poppyshine stepped past them to nose Swanpaw awake. She smiled at the apprentice and meowed, “Let’s get started, shall we?”
She let Swanpaw get roused and then they set out into the territory. As they headed out, Poppyshine asked, “Can you tell me what you have already learned during your apprenticeship? I don’t want to tread over the same information that you already know, but a lot of things are important, so I don’t want you to miss anything.”

Being roused awake, Swanpaw was quick to follow Poppyshine out of the den, hardly sparing a moment for her pelt. She'd been asleep, but the sight of the deputy and her new mentor had the apprentice wide awake and eager to get things started.
"I really didn't learn much before she got sick." Swanpaw muttered with a flick of her tail, "Lavenderpaw taught me how to fish, actually. In the little pools around camp." She wasn't embarrassed to admit that the other apprentice had taught her. Not having learned from her mentor was not a reflection on herself, Swanpaw decided. "I wouldn't say I'm great at it, but it was a start. And... That's about it, really." It was frustrating, but this was her chance to learn, this was her chance to be better.

Poppyshine
Poppyshine considered Swanpaw’s explanation and then gave a definitive nod in response. “Makes sense! It seems you’ve got some experience already…Since it doesn’t sound like you’ve gotten a full tour, though, we’ll visit the important landmarks in the territory so you can know your way around. On our way, we can do some hunting to bring prey back as well.” She smiled down at Swanpaw and began to lead the way.
“So you’ve tried fishing in the pools, but fishing in the river is a different matter entirely. Let’s stop there and you can try your paw at fishing. The catches there are a lot bigger, and they can be slipperier than the ones you find in the pools.” Usually the only fish in the pools are the ones that are tiny enough to swim through the tiny streams connecting them to the river.

"Not as much as I'd like, no." She hardly knew her own territory, and what a shame that was. "Alright, sounds good to me." Fishing on the way back was something Swanpaw was sure she could handle. Even if the river was larger and the fish slipperier... Was that a word? Either way, the apprentice was determined to learn what she could. "That makes sense... Those pools around camp are so small." She had seen much larger fish on the fresh-kill pile, of course. She hoped that she would be able to catch those sooner rather than later. For now, Swanpaw took in the territory around her as she bounced along at Poppyshine's side.

Poppyshine
As they walked, Poppyshine pointed out some landmarks so Swanpaw could more easily find her way to and from the river. She would probably have Swanpaw try and guide them back when they were finished for the day. For now, they arrived at the river and Poppyshine situated them at the shore.
“Be mindful of the river’s current,” she said. “The river can sometimes move so swiftly that even us RiverClan cats struggle to swim through the current. It is even worse in leafbare when the water gets so cold it freezes up your body. When you grab fish, try to not lean so far forward that you risk falling in.” After giving her warnings, she gestured towards the water and smiled. “Now, show me what Lavenderpaw had taught you. Let’s see if you can catch a big fish.”

Swanpaw followed after Poppyshine, taking in her words with all the excitement of an apprentice on her first outing. She paid attention to every landmark shown, trying to commit as much of the territory to memory as she could. It was larger than she had realized, having not been out of camp much, but now that she was training, Swanpaw knew she would be able to explore and learn it all. It was hers, after all.
When they came to the river's edge, Swanpaw's eyes widened slightly at the breadth of it, glancing from Poppyshine back to the sparkling waters. "That's... Very different from the pools." She murmured, an ear twitching at her mentor's words. "Got it, that makes sense."
Swanpaw's blue eyes turned back to the river intently as she sat along the shore, being careful not to let her shadow fall over the water as she lifted a paw, waiting for the telltale flash of silver to come near.
She couldn't help the impatient twitch of her tail, but finally, finally there was a flicker of movement beneath the water's surface, after what felt like an eternity but what really could not have been more than a few minutes. Swanpaw's paw shot forward with unsheathed claws, hooking the fish towards her. It fell onto the sandy riverbank, and while her move to kill the fish was awkward and clumsy still, it went still beneath her paw.
It might not have been her first try, but it was her first try at the river, and her first try in front of her mentor. Elation filled her at the thought of catching a fish so easily. "How was that?"
Swanpaw attempted to catch a fish for -3 sp. Catch successful. 57 / 60 sp

Poppyshine
Poppyshine watched Swanpaw carefully. She noticed the impatience in her tail, but did not comment. Fishing was not like hunting for land prey, where you could follow the scent and make progress yourself. Fishing, you simply had to wait. She understood the impatience. But when the time came, Swanpaw was ready.
“Very good!” Poppyshine cheered, though she kept her voice low to not startle the fish in the water. “That was great, Swanpaw. The movements will get easier the more that you practice. It’ll start feeling as natural as breathing.”
She looked back at the water. “Let’s each grab one more piece of prey so we’ll have plenty to bring back to camp. Then we can continue through the territory and I can show you a couple other important spots.”
Poppyshine lifted her own paw and tensed in preparation. Her experienced eye spotted a fish that was swimming a little further beneath the water’s surface, and she lashed out at it. The nabbed the fish, but when it surfaced, she heard a familiar shrieking that she had heard on her own first outing when she was an apprentice. The goose slammed into her, knocking Poppyshine back and dropping the fish into the river. The goose stomped around and tried to grab at it, but the fish had already made its escape down the current. The goose looked back at the pair of cats, seeming angry that its free meal got away.
“…or we’ll get some battle training!” Poppyshine meowed, trying to still sound upbeat. Geese were not the worst enemy in the world—they were no foxes—but she had till hoped that Swanpaw could have a peaceful first outing.
Quickly, Poppyshine got to her feet. “I’ll keep it focused on me, Swanpaw. You get some hits in when you see an opportunity, alright? Keep safe!” Then, she jumped in and moved swiftly around the goose and smacked it along the head a few times which made the bird dizzy.
Poppyshine tried to catch a fish, but summoned a predator! -3 SP. The Goose used Beaked Thrust on Poppyshine, dealing 10 damage and costing 15 SP. Poppyshine retaliated with Experienced Steps, dealing 8 damage and costing 10 SP. The Goose is stunned for 1 turn.

Swanpaw felt almost giddy at her mentor's praise. She was right, the movement would get easier with practice, it already had felt a little easier than the first time she'd hunted with Lavenderpaw. "I'll keep practicing!" She vowed, settling in to watch her mentor catch a fish of her own.
Only, the sudden screeching and honking of what was clearly an angry bird... A really big angry bird... Interrupted. Swanpaw's eyes widened slightly, ears flattening as it charge right at her mentor. Poppyshine seemed to take it in stride though, and the prospect of battle training was an exciting one. Lavenderpaw had told her that she already knew one battle move when she fished... He'd meant her claws. It was another chance to show Poppyshine that she was a quick learner. Swanpaw darted forward, slashing at the oversized bird with unsheathed claws.
Swanpaw used Front Paw Strike for -7 sp, dealing -6 damage.

Poppyshine
The goose let out a honking roar when Swanpaw’s claws tore through its feathers. It took a step forward but staggered, still feeling dizzy from Poppyshine’s previous attack. Poppyshine flashed Swanpaw a proud grin and then took Swanpaw’s place in raking her claws down the front of the goose.
“Swanpaw, here’s a lesson,” Poppyshine said breathlessly as she fell back in step. “A lot of cats can give into fear when they are facing a larger opponent. But good fighters are able to channel that fear into skill and strike twice quickly. You think you can manage that?”
The goose is stunned this turn. Poppyshine used Front Paw Strike, dealing 10 damage and costing 7 SP. (She also hinted at the move Desperate Blows to Swanpaw!)
Subject: Re: A New Dawn, A New Day [C] Fri 11 Aug 2023 - 9:27
Fear? Swanpaw would never give into that, she told herself. Fear into skill, though... That sounded as interesting as it did strange to Swanpaw. How could fear be useful? Unless Poppyshine meant running to preserve her life... No, that wasn't right, Swanpaw realized almost immediately. At least, she hoped it wasn't right.
The goose made a lot of noise, even for an oversized bird. For the moment it seemed too dazed to attack still, and as Poppyshine slashed at it, Swanpaw did the same. Getting in as much damage as she could while the obnoxious bird wasn't attacking them was a good strategy, right?
Swanpaw used Front Paw Strike for -7 sp, dealing -6 damage. Swanpaw used Desperate Blows for -7 sp, dealing -4 damage.

Poppyshine
The goose honked loudly as Swanpaw battered it with claws. It shook its head, finally clearing itself of its startled shock. It had barely gotten an attack in at all against these cats, and so it seemed unwilling to keep trying. The goose flapped its wings, rising up menacingly to get the cats to pause for just long enough before the goose leaps away and into the water, where it swiftly goes downstream to tend to its injuries.
Poppyshine let out a relieved breath when the predator retreated and she beamed at her apprentice. “Expertly done!” she purred. “You didn’t hesitate for a second. You have the true makings of a warrior in you, Swanpaw.” She leaned down to check her over. “Now it didn’t hurt you, right? You don’t look injured. Let’s take a moment to rest after all of that. Battle can be quite tiring.”

The goose seemed to think better of continuing to attack the two Riverclanners, breaking free and waddling as fast as it could away from them with a series of loud honks. Swanpaw growled at it, but if the stupid bird was in retreat, she'd let it go. Especially if Poppyshine was also doing that... And praising her efforts.
"I'm fine, Poppyshine!" She mewed cheerfully, claws flexing in the sand. The making of a true warrior? Swanpaw beamed at those words. She would do her best to prove Poppyshine right. Nobody in the other clans would think of her as anything but a proper Riverclanner. "I bet that thing won't be back anytime soon!"

Poppyshine
Poppyshine chuckled with a purr as Swanpaw looked over the moon. She was happy that the apprentice was still so excited about being a warrior. It was good to see. “I bet not. We should be able to continue our hunt without interruption.” She nodded. “Let’s see if that warmed you up enough to catch more.”
She sat back and observed Swanpaw as she hunted in the river, and the rest of their day out checking landmarks and other important areas that she knew Swanpaw would know like the back of her paw in no time.
