Wolfblossom was excited to perform this particular apprentice ceremony. Well, she was always excited to do apprentice ceremonies, but this one was special. Her grandson was finally ready to move to the apprentice's den. She was proud to see her grandkits growing up so quickly, but much like with her own kits, Wolfblossom found herself lamenting how it felt like they hadn't been in the nursery all that long to begin with.
The white and gray tabby stood on the tallbranch and called out to the clan, "Let all cats old enough to climb a tree gather beneath the tallbranch for a clan meeting!"
Bearkit was observing the activity of the clan from a distance, tail curled around his paws and ears perked for any new information. However, it wasn't information, but the summons of yet another clan meeting. The brown and white kit looked up at the sound of Wolfblossom's voice, suddenly alert. A meeting? It had been a while since he'd been around - much less awake - for one of those.
The young tom hauled himself to his paws with a grunt and lazily padded toward the center of the camp. Unfortunately, he was already out here and it would be rude to actively avoid a clan meeting by ducking into the nursery for yet another nap.
Eyes peeled for his littermates, Bearkit settled down near some warrior he didn't recognize and huffed. Where had his sisters gotten off to anyway? They were probably playing some game in the nursery or maybe just out of his sight line.
Regardless of where they were, Bearkit was interested to see what this meeting was about - he didn't often get to attend them- so he stayed put, tail twitching impatiently. Did these things always take forever?
The clan gathered before her, and Wolfblossom smiled when she spotted her grandson among the crowd. He was a quiet, thoughtful tom, more reserved than much of their family. "Bearkit, step forward," She called, and waited for him to do so before she continued. "You have reached the age of six moons, and it's time for you to become an apprentice. From now until you earn your warrior name you will be known as Bearpaw. Your mentor will be Sunfire, I trust him to teach you everything he knows." Wolfblossom leapt down from the tallbranch, signaling the end of the ceremony.
Bubblekit squealed happily and bounded forward out of the crowd, almost rocketing onto her brother after he'd finished greeting his new mentor. "Waaaa, you're an apprentice! Congrats, Bearbear! I'm so excited!" She nuzzled into his fur enthusiastically. "And you get Daddy as your mentor! Luckyyyy!" It only took a few moments for her to get tired of not seeing her brother and step back, looking up into his face with a wide grin. "Can't wait to get my own apprentice name and patrol with you!"
Sorrelkit paused her creeping around the nursery at the call of her brother’s name— quickly bounding out of her hiding place with her ears perked. He looked so effortlessly calm as their grandmother announced his new name, pride swelling in her chest as she watched him.
It would be a lie to say she couldn’t help but feel a pang of jealousy as her father’s name was called out. Sunfire was going be Bearkit—Bearpaw’s mentor! Be happy for him! She swallowed her jealousy and ran out towards the back of the crowd, cheering her brother’s new name as loudly as possible,
“Bearpaw! Bearpaw!” Why was she stood there? She saw family rush to apprentices’ sides all the time — who would stop her! Sorrelkit paused as she saw Bubblekit run run towards their brother, bouncing after her excitedly. She all but head butted her brother as she brushed her cheek against his, “you’re an apprentice! And papa’s your mentor— you’re so lucky!”
