The sun wasn't quite above the treeline yet, and Beechfang was glad to have been assigned an early patrol. It wasn't that she was a morning person - far from it - but an early start to the day always felt more productive. Long shadows still offered a decent amount of shade, and while the day was already uncomfortably warm, that would make the patrol bearable.
A dark-furred tom was approaching, and Beechfang inclined her head to him briefly. "Foxtrot, right?" That's who Wolfblossom had said she was patrolling with, anyways. One of Dawnfeather's, if she remembered correctly. That meant he'd be a decent sort... And she feared what stories Dawnfeather must've told him. Her niece was sweet and loving... And would go to lengths to ignore faults in those she cared about. Beechfang appreciated it, but it also scared her.
She shook her head, trying to clear her thoughts. "Let's go, then. This is as nice as it'll get today, I think." She mewed, ducking through the camp's entrance with a wave of her tail.
Foxtrot had woken up quite early, the birds had yet to wake from their nests - he had snuck into the nursery to visit with Thyme. The queens didn't mind but he couldn't help but feel like he was intruding, after all he wasn't truly her father - just, as close as it could get. As birds started to chirp high above them, Foxtrot gave Thyme a playful cuff over the ear with a paw and exited the nursery, throwing a 'see you later kid!' over his shoulder.
As he exited the nursery a yawn stretched over his maw and he looked from side to side. Now what was it he needed to do? His eyes widened as he remembered.
Ah! Yes, patrol with Beechaunt! His tail raised and he nearly galloped over to her. The sleep was still evident on his face and his crumpled fur and eye crust he didn't swipe away. His appearance was his last concern - and while he did care about making an impression, in his mind, appearance didn't count.
"Yep!" he confirmed, "Let's do it, Beachaunt."
As he walked he couldn't help but look at his great-aunts scars, he did so without hiding his gaze and didn't feel guilt for looking at them where others may try and hide their curiosity - Foxtrot didn't. But, he also didn't ask. At least not right away. He looked down at his own small scar he had recently gained from a hawk he had killed with his previous apprentice. It healed nicely and sat hidden under his coat, definitely not as...obvious as Beechaunts. Sheesh. Foxtrot didn't know whether he should be impressed or frightened. Or both? He wondered what Beechaunt would want someone to feel. Or maybe she's had them for so long she just wants everyone to forget that the scars were there at all. He shook his head as he thought it. What a silly thought. If you had such intricate scarring, why not show it off? It showed you were a strong warrior. A survivor. Foxtrot was impressed by that more than anything.
Not wanting there to be an awkward moment of her realizing he was looking and her having to think of what to say he smiled and tilted his head, "I don't even wanna imagine how the otha' guy looks." he joked hoping it would break the ice. Or at least break any sort of silence that befell them.

Her guess was confirmed, the messy-pelted tom was Foxtrot. Beechfang was content to let silence hang between them as they walked. She ought to make the effort to get to know this distant family of hers - Dawnfeather's family was her family - but Beechfang wouldn't have known where to start. He called her Beechaunt, and the nickname Dawnfeather had coined so long ago did make her smile faintly.
She could feel Foxtrot's eyes on her as they made their way away from camp. She was used to stares, used to judgment. All she could do was let it slide off of her shoulders. Whatever someone else thought of Beechfang, it was their problem and not hers. Most cats had the shame to try and hide looking at her, but Foxtrot seemed to lack that. An honest cat, or at least honest enough about assessing the stranger among his clan, the scarred potential-threat who had been exiled long ago. He finally spoke, and the warrior let out a snort. Like kits, he was blunt. Honest. That might get him into trouble one day, but today would not be it. For now.
"Rotting in the dark forest." It had been quite the shock to see that rogue she had fought with her brother in twolegplace in the dark forest, even more to learn that she'd been a former clan cat called Rainstrike. She, at least, Beechfang was reasonably sure was where she belonged. Dawnhawk, on the other paw... She wanted to think he was. She wasn't naive enough to let herself truly believe it.
"...Unless you mean the lightning. The cats who caused that are dead, too." She was speaking of Bearwhatever and Cloverheart, of course... But Starclan also fit that description. But the two who had been the source of their wrath at that gathering were dead and buried, or as dead and buried as Beechfang's thoughts would let them be.
