Brindlepaw had made a good start to her apprenticeship, but still wanted to do better. It was a pleasant day, clear and bright but not too hot, and so she had decided to go practice her sparring moves in the forest. She wasn't strictly speaking supposed to be out of camp by herself, especially on the outskirts of their territory, close enough to Shadowclan's border that she could hear the infrequent roar of a monster. But, in her mind, this was the best place to be - there was a thin tree stump about the height of a cat, and certain battle techniques she could still practice on the inanimate object. Although most would practice sparring with clanmates, it annoyed Brindlepaw when they didn't do what she wanted them to, didn't make the right swipe so she could practice the specific dodge she wanted to and all that. Trees were good, trees were predictable.

However, at the end of the day if her clan needed protecting it wouldn't be against timber, so eventually she wandered towards the border, wanting to get a peak into Shadowclan's dark forests. When she had come out with Lichenwing, they had been the other side of the forest, nearer Skyclan, and now Brindlepaw wanted to see their other neighbour. She found herself at the edge of the Thunderpath, the smell of it combined with Shadowclan enough to make her eyes sting. She shrank back in horror as a monster raced past, her heart hammering in her chest. It was only after the monster passed that she noticed another cat nearby, and Shadowclan warrior who had stepped onto the Thunderpath for some unknown reason. An invader? Brindlepaw wasn't sure if the other cat had seen her, and couldn't think of any other reason a warrior from another clan would be practically all the way over the border (at least in her mind).  Immediately, the apprentice did what she believed to be right, darting across the Thunderpath and bowling into the other cat, claws unsheathed, hoping to protect her clan from the unwelcome visitor.

Sunflare had been checking the borders on his own, taking a rare opportunity to think and plan how he would influence his kits to be the best warriors possible without jeopardizing his own ambitions. Stepping onto the Thunderpath momentarily, he nodded. The strange surface had soaked up the Greenleaf sun and stung his pads if he stood in one place. Good. ThunderClan would stay on their own side.

At least they would if they had any sense at all. Sunflare hadn’t taken into account the apparently inherent stupidity of apprentices, as one bowled him back onto his own side. Sunflare landed on his back and in a flash his claws were scraping the impertinent fuzzball’s abdomen. Not too hard, but hard enough to leave marks.

Brindlepaw couldn't help but cry out at the sudden shock of pain that ran through her when the warrior's claws met her soft underbelly. She immediately came to the realisation that she had picked a fight she had no chance of winning after feeling the Shadowclan cat's strength against her. Starclan help her. Her mother was right - she needed to start considering her actions a bit more, especially when said actions could leave her badly injured. But her pride would never let her give up a fight just like that. With little knowledge of what else to do, the apprentice lashed out with desperate sharp claws.

Slipping out from under the apprentice in a flash, Sunflare whirled around and planted his paws on the impertinent youngster’s head. The tom felt a strange rush, having never done this specifically before. “Go,” he growled, letting his claws draw just the tiniest bit of blood. “You have broken the code and I am within my right to kill you now. However, unlike you, I know better than to start a war without direct orders.” He stepped off the apprentice. “Go, fool. Tell your friends exactly what happens when you provoke ShadowClan.”
