Fernpaw's Warrior Ceremony

A warrior ceremony. The first one he would ever hold. Although, he didn't think he'd be upset if it was also his last. Smallbean stood atop the Tallrock, silently contemplating whether or not he should call to his clanmates. Fernpaw certainly was ready to become a warrior, but stars, he didn't want to be the one to have to hold the ceremony.

After a heavy sigh, he made up his mind, as if there was a decision to be made in the first place. It was his job, it had to be done. He called out. "Let all cats old enough All cats old enough to run the moors gather around the Tallrock for a clan meeting!"

Despite the scratches she showed on her chest, Fernpaw couldn't be happier. She recently had her first fight with another clan cat and won! She successfully defended Windclan's border from a Riverclan apprentice who chose to come way too close. With a grin on her face, the apprentice joined the clan meeting called by Windclan's deputy.

As the clan gathered beneath him, his worries became much more real. Rosepaw's mentor reassignment ceremony going well gave him some hope that he'd be able to execute this correctly. Fernpaw appeared in the crowd. Smallbean took a deep breath. The ceremony began. The words that every single cat in this clearing had heard. "Fernpaw, please step forward." He paused, allowing the she-cat to do so. "Do you uh- pledge to honor and defend WindClan... even at the cost of your own life?" The worry was evident in his voice, but he continued.

The apprentice was surprised to see yet again at the deputy taking more chores. Nowadays it seemed like Smallbean took all the responsibilities of the clan while the other high ranks were doing who knew what. However, Fernpaw didn't complain. She step forward with determined eyes and mewed a firm: "I do!"

Smallbean contained his nervousness, swallowing his fear and pushing forward. He recited the words he'd heard many times before. "Then... under StarClan's watchful eyes, I grant you your warrior name. From now on, you will be known as Ferntwist. Continue to protect your clan, and your clan will protect you in turn." Something about the words felt hypocritical, but there was no other option to say. They were the words Shrikestar had been saying for moons, but they felt more like empty lies. As the clan began to erupt into cheers for the new warrior, Smallbean looked skyward, wondering if Starclan really was watching, and if they were disapproving of Windclan's current state.

Nectarpaw padded out of the apprentice's den just as Smallbean called for a clan meeting. Humming good-naturedly, she meandered to the center of the camp and plopped herself down beside a few of her older clanmates.

The young she-cat tilted her head up to look at her deputy, green eyes wide and curious to see what was going on.

It quickly became clear, once Fernpaw was called forward, that it was her friend's warrior ceremony! Nectarpaw's pelt tingled with joy and she watched her denmate padded forward for her ceremony.

This was so exciting! Nectarpaw was so happy for her!

As the ceremony came to a close, Nectarpaw hurried back into her den. She pulled a little bundle out from under her nest and darted back out into the clearing.

Wanting to be the first to personally congratulate her clanmate, she bounded up to the newly named Ferntwist and nuzzled her joyfully before dropping the specially crafted bundle at her paws. Congratulations! I'm so happy for you!" She touched her nose to Ferntwist's shoulder and leaned back, her eyes glimmering with somewhat bittersweet happiness.

After a moment, Nectarpaw nudged the bundle of flowers with her paw and smiled. "Oh! And I made this for you!"

"I'll miss you in the apprentice's den, but I'm sure I'll catch up to you eventually!" Suddenly, the tortoiseshell remembered that she and Ferntwist still hadn't visited the flower fields...

However, Nectarpaw didn't want to spoil Fernpaw's celebration. She would ask another day.

The now-named Ferntwist puffed up her chest with pride. She looked around to her clanmates, as they called and chanted her new name. She was finally a warrior, an active part of the clan. It took time because of his injury but the day finally came.

A familiar face emerged from the crowd and the younger she-cat warmly nuzzled her, a gesture that Ferntwist immediately returned. The white-and-grey molly smiled widely at the she-cat, noticing the gift she carried with her. "Thank you Nectarpaw!" The young warrior grabbed the bundle with her jaws and gracefully place it in her back. She will soon use them to decorate her new moss bed in the warriors' den. "Don't worry. With Sootstorm as your mentor I bet you will be a warrior in just a few moons. But until then, these flowers will keep me company at night and we can now hang out during the day! As a warrior, I should be able to bring you with me out of camp without anyone's permission." Ferntwist winked at the apprentice, hoping to make her feel better. She could sense that despite her congratulations, Nectarpaw was sad because of her departure from the apprentice den. She was going to make up for it by spending more time with her.
