There was noticeable pride in Birdstar’s eyes when she mounted the Tallbranch, late afternoon sun ducking just behind her. She had a personal interest in this warrior ceremony, and she knew Wolfblossom was excited too. Graypaw was joining her brothers in the warrior’s den. After one last look over the Clan in search of her niece, Birdstar yowled, “Let all cats old enough to climb the trees, gather below the Tallbranch for a Clan meeting!”
Graypaw glanced up at the sound of her aunt's call, dropping the squirrel she'd caught onto the fresh kill pile before padding towards the tallbranch to join her gathering clanmates. It was another ceremony probably, and Graypaw selfishly hoped it might be hers at last. Her training had been going much better with Thornstalker, but there was still a nagging voice in the back of her head telling Graypaw it was unlikely to be hers. She tried to ignore it, giving her pelt a few quick licks to smooth bits of wispy silver fur.
Birdstar kept her eyes on her niece while Graypaw dropped off a squirrel and settled among the crowd. Her ceremony was overdue, maybe, but the delays had been no fault of hers. She’d make a fine warrior, just like the rest of their family. “Graypaw, please step forward.” Birdstar called, flicking her tail to beckon her. When she had, “StarClan, I call upon you to look down on this apprentice. She’s trained hard to understand the ways of your noble code, and I commend her to you as a warrior in turn. Graypaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code, to protect and defend your Clan, even at the cost of your life?”
"Graypaw, please step forward." If she'd noticed Wolfblossom's grin as the deputy sat below the tallbranch, maybe Birdstar's voice wouldn't have come as such a surprise. The silvery she-cat blinked, golden eyes widening slightly in her initial shock. Her warrior ceremony, the realization sinking in as she did as prompted. Graypaw seemed to shake off the shock, expression clearing as she gazed up at Birdstar with bright golden eyes.
Graypaw found her voice at last, "I do." She spoke with conviction.
It was hard to miss the surprise in Graypaw’s eyes, but when she stepped into place and looked up she looked sure. Birdstar nodded, and a purr edged her voice when she spoke next, “Then I grant you your full name as a warrior. From this day on, you will be known to all as Graywind. SkyClan honors your steadiness and loyalty.” Without any hesitation, Birdstar leaped down from the Tallbranch, brushing past Wolfblossom as she moved to touch her nose to the newly-named warrior’s head. “Good job, Graywind. I’m proud of you; you’ve earned this. Hopefully your vigil will be quiet.” After another, more affectionate nosing, and with a purr still rumbling in her throat, Birdstar stepped back to let others come celebrate her.
Birdstar continued, and finally the little voice in the back of Graypaw's mind seemed to quiet. She'd been waiting for her ceremony for what felt like moons, and now that it was finally happening it left little room for doubt.
Ceremony concluded, Graywind purred at Birdstar's words. "Thank you!" She mewed softly, and then Wolfblossom was padding forward as well. "I know how hard you worked for this, I'm so proud of you, Graywind." Her mother purred, brushing against her flank before taking a step back to allow their other clanmates to offer congratulations.
