Badgermask huffed softly as she led Creekpaw through the territory - heading towards the open area of the Pine Grove. She honestly wasn't very sure where to start with training - but she remembered what her mother had done for her...Simply asking her to try hunting and a brief spar to see where Badgermask's skills lied. She...Suppose that would work, thought she suspected that Creekpaw didn't need the confident boost that she had struggled to gain for most of her apprenticeship until that fateful fight with the dogs. She wasn't sure how she felt about this, getting an apprentice but she... Was truthfully a little excited - she liked younger cats. Kits, young apprentices... They were... They didn't know how cruel the world could be. They were straight forward, she had come to realize. There was nothing she had to fear when it came to being tricked - whatever she would see of Creekpaw would be his true self and that would make it easier for her to know how she felt upon him.

"Alright," she meowed as they reached the grotto, coming to a stop to glance at her apprentice. "I'm thinking we go over the basics today - try your paw at hunting and a little sparring. Figure out how you deal with both, know where to focus our training. Is there one of the two you would prefer to start with?"

Creekpaw padded along behind Badgermask, his heart thundering in his chest. It was exhilarating to be out in the territory, finally out of camp for once. It was somehow larger than he expected, and every glance around gave him a new sight to see, a new scent to smell. He was going to ask where they were going, but he didn't want to seem annoying, incessantly asking questions...That seemed to bother Nightstarpaw, maybe it would bother Badgermask too. Finally they stopped, and his mentor turned to him with a question ⎯ hunting or sparring?

The gray tom frowned, thinking. Hunting may be more fruitful for the Clan, but... "Sparring," he mewed decisively. There was a war coming, after all. ShadowClan needed to be prepared. He needed to be prepared, and he refused to go into a war with little to no battle training.

Badgermask nodded at the apprentice's short answer, before she paused to think of how to best go about that. Her mother had simply had her swipe at her to start things off, but she was rather sure that Leopardsun knew such a small task was going to be monumental thing to Badgermask, with her crippling doubt back then... Creekpaw didn't seem to have any of that doubts - but would a full out spar prove useful? ...No, not truly - he had no experience. Throwing into a deep end of him verse her would not teach him much. So, where to start...

Her gaze was narrowed as she stared off into the horizon before she finally turned to look back at him. "Alright. When it comes to battling, its hard to always have the upper-paw. There will always be a difference in size, in training - when it comes to battling, you need to throw any concerns and doubts on where you stand compared to your opponent. Instead, you need to make the moments where you have the upper paw yourself. A good place to start is getting their paws out from beneath them, bring them to the ground so that they have to waste time scrambling back up while you have openings to strike. Ram into them, pull on their tail, try to swipe a paw out from beneath them or pinning them." There was a pause, as she glanced Creekpaw up and down. "...Granted you would have trouble pinning me with our size difference, but you could still jump onto my back and be out of reach from nearly anything I could do while I would be left to just try to knock you off by throwing my weight around."

She turned, starting to pace back and forth. "In battle, you don't want to take the time to think. Thinking is a moment lost, a hesitation that your enemy can use against you. Simply feel the flow of battle and follow that - know instinctively how to use what could be a disadvantage for you into an advantage. So." She came to a stop, dropping into a battle crouch as she spun to look at her apprentice. "I am your opponent - what do you think is your best option in the opening of a fight? Do not tell me - show me."

Creekpaw listened to Badgermask carefully, mouth slightly ajar. "Don't take time to think," she said. Don't think, just do. When Badgermask spun to face him and dropped into a battle stance, a sudden thought came to him: Knock her over. Do whatever you can to get her prone, to subdue her. There was a considerable size difference, but Badgermask's comment about leaping onto her back would work.

In the opening of a fight, what was his best option? Creekpaw hesitated for only a heartbeat before his body took over. He launched himself at his mentor, springing over her head and onto her back. He made sure to keep his claws sheathed, as he didn't want to actually hurt her, but realistically he would have them unsheathed in a real battle...He was here on top of her, now what?

Creekpaw used Leap-and-Hold on Badgermask, using 15 stamina and dealing 6* damage. Badgermask is pinned for 2 turns.

Badgermask's eyes narrowed in focus as Creekpaw leapt towards her, eyes searching as she tried to pin-point what he was going to do before it was clear that he had taken her advice as he pushed from the ground and leapt over her - landing on her back. She turned her head to look at him through the corner of her vision, her expression unreasonable but there was a glint of pride in her eyes before she suddenly threw her weight to the side - trying to throw Creekpaw off. It seems however Creekpaw had a tight hold as he did not tumble off like she was hoping and she could only let out a prideful huff at him as she titled her head at him - wondering what he would be doing next.

Badgermask used Duck-and-Twist on Creekpaw, dealing 4 damage and costing 5 stamina. Badgermask failed to break the pin.
