Sootpaw circled Rosepaw, his eyes narrowed in playfulness. After much begging, Tigerdance had finally allowed him to go out for a sparring session with Rosepaw. He was curious-- was his strength enough to best a former apprentice turned kittypet, or would Rosepaw have regained some of her battle skills? He curled his lip in a mock-snarl, and lunged forward to strike the she-cat.

Rosepaw happily agreed when an apprentice asked to spar. She was never formally taught to fight, being lost as a newly-named apprentice. She had grown up more gently than if she had been able to stay on the moor, as a kittypet and then in the Distant Garden.

She gave him a playful grimace back as they circled each other... She wasn't prepared for Sootpaw's swift leaping lunge. She stumbled back, almost losing her balance under the strength of the younger cat. Breathlessly, between puffs, "That was smart!" He had struck early and with WindClan quickness, circling her until he was on her blink right side with the neatly closed winky eye, catching her by surprise.

Claws sheathed safely, she clumsily backed up and tried to hit him with a soft fluffy paw. But her care and reluctance in raising a paw against her clanmate took any power out of the strike.

The hit from Rosepaw barely grazed his shoulder. Sootpaw's eyes widened in disbelief. Was a kittypet really this weak. More confident now, the tom hit back with his own blow.

The hit from Sootpaw with a front paw was much stronger than Rosepaw's. "Oof!" she complained playfully, half shocked by the blow. Before he could strike again she weakly and pushed her head into his flank, kit-like.

They exchanged blows for a while, and Sootpaw found himself enjoying the spar with Rosepaw. She might not be the strongest, but at least she's trying, he thought to himself as he reared and struck again.

The next hit almost knocked Rosepaw off her feet. It wouldn't take much more to knock her to the ground. Despite this, she purred cheerfully, "I think you'll be a good warrior, Sootpaw!" She wasn't sure where that left her, but, she tried another hit with a gentle sheathed paw.

"That was fun, wasn't it?" Rosepaw purred softly with laughter as Sootpaw's eyes glowed confidently at her praise. She'd have reacted exactly the same at his age, wouldn't she? She had meet a serious, focused, respectful side of Sootpaw and Rosepaw had enjoyed their spar ~ her first ever. Picking herself up from her sprawl in the dust, "Please show me sometime how to make a strike so strong!" she said lightly, her one golden eye closed in a friendly trustful smile.

Sootpaw nodded in agreement as Rosepaw declared that it had been a fun spar. Who knew fighting- learning to harm other cats- could be turned into a friendly and harmless batter between friends? "I'll show you how to fight next time," He promised eagerly, making up his mind that he'll focus more on his battle skills from now on.
