anywhere you go [solo]

Nightdancer stalked ThunderClan's territory with practiced ease, navigating the undergrowth she knew as well as her own four paws. This place, her home, the only place she'd ever called as such- she had sheltered in Fourtrees with the rest of the Clans, yes, but that was sacred ground and extraordinary circumstances. Home was here, the heart of the forest.

And her favored prey, an unsuspecting squirrel at the base of a nearby tree, hadn't yet noticed her approach. Good.

Hunting was a game of skill just as much as it was a game of luck, and while she hadn't considered herself to be all that fortunate she did think of herself as a talented hunter.

Well, there was also the fact that squirrels were fun to chase. That was why she went looking for them outside of standard patrols, after all; the thrill of the hunt.

There were, however, things that even the most skilled warriors couldn't entirely avoid: the flash of black and grey at the edge of her vision was quickly revealed to be a raccoon, a stinging pain in her leg where its claws raked through her fur.

She swiftly turned and retaliated with a flurry of strikes, accompanied by slamming her weight into her opponent to incapacitate it.

While the raccoon was too dazed to strike back, Nightdancer had a split second to think on what she wanted to do next. She didn't need more than that: her paws slammed down on its head, aiming to knock it properly the ground, and- once she ensured it wasn't going to be standing anytime soon- delivered a final killing blow.

Satisfied that it wouldn't interrupt her hunting any further, Nightdancer made note of where she'd killed it and moved on- she would retrieve it before returning to camp. Raccoon fur would make a nice, soft lining for her nest.

Nightdancer pressed on, trying to ignore the ill omen of being attacked so shortly after leaving ThunderClan's camp. At least it had only been a raccoon, and not one of those mysterious things that there had been signs of on their territory. She hadn't thought about that possibility when she set out to hunt, other than brushing it off- she didn't see the point in gathering an extra patrol, given that she could handle herself and didn't particularly want to be the one to ask any of her clanmates.

A bird flitted from low-hanging branch to low-hanging branch above her, and she paused to watch. If it didn't notice her presence, then she stood a chance.

She leapt for it, but missed; the sound of her claws scraping the branch alerting her target to her presence.

This, she thought, is why I don't follow the squirrels up there. Leave that to SkyClan.

As she kept moving through the familiar undergrowth, Nightdancer shook her head as if the action might clear her thoughts. She was a warrior, trained to track and to hunt just as much as to fight, and she knew she was a good hunter- why was she so off balance? She hadn't seen the raccoon coming and lost her squirrel in the process, and then she'd missed an easy enough catch with the bird...

Was something wrong with her? The raccoon had only hit her once, and while her leg still stung she had kept going through worse. She would visit Fawnshine when she was done hunting, anyway; she wasn't ignoring it completely.

The rabbit caught her eye before she caught wind of its scent.

One more try, she decided. If I can't catch it, I'll turn around. Pick up the raccoon and go straight to the medicine den.

She gave chase, ignoring the lingering stinging pain in her leg, and leapt for it; feeling herself land directly on top of it. She wasted no time at all in pinning it down and delivering a swift, killing blow; and with a silent thanks to the prey for its life, today's hunt could be marked as a success.
