A Snatch of Claws [firefly]

With the recent findings of odd, unfamiliar pawprints, and tufts of fur from unfamiliar felines found on their territory, it was most likely that his mentor would not allow him to head outside hunting alone. Thrushpaw had planned to do so at first, his paws eager to get some more personal experience without the guidance of others—though safety was always first, they said. Assigned a patrol with Firefly, his sister, the tom had awoken early in the morning, wanting to feel refreshed enough to begin their hunt.

He had Firefly and hadn't interacted too much, despite being siblings. He had always hoped for an opportunity to get to know everyone more, regardless of blood or familiarity. Perhaps it was bad to be too trusting, but he knew when to be cautious, especially when dealing with outsiders other than Gatherings. Spotting the she-cat by the warriors' den, he trotted up to her, a warm smile on his maw. "Hey, Firefly. Ready to begin our hunting patrol?"

Thrushpaw grinned, offering the she-cat a firm nod before turning around. He wasted little time in leading them out of camp, and into the familiar woods in which Thunderclan lay in. The forest was full of chirps that morning, the woodland eagerly greeting the two of them in a hunt. It was as if the prey themselves were excited for the return of Newleaf, the last evidence of snow melting away to reveal the fresh grass that grew in its place. He stopped upon a clear spot in the midst of the territory, where he found plenty of bushes and leaves—perfect hiding spots for rodents and prey alike.

A rustle in the bush to the right caught his attention, and Thrushpaw was immediately on the move. Crouched down to a somewhat skilled position, he crept forward, waiting for just the moment to strike before pouncing. The sparrow, unsuspecting of his presence, was swiftly caught between his jaws. The tom proudly shook himself away from the leaves that clung onto his fur as he exited the bush, holding his catch in sight.

Thrushpaw offered his sister an empathic smile as she missed her prey, but he did not seem to mind, as they could always try again. At the sudden question, he blinked, tail curling in thought. He had considered it before, but he never thought too much over the fact that he was still a bit later than the rest. "Maybe Eveningmoon's just extra careful. Who knows? It wasn't till later that my apprenticeship started. He wasn't there before, but I don't blame him," he smiled sheepishly, not wanting to blame his mentor for his earlier absence. "I'm not rushing to be a warrior, anyway, even though that'd be really cool."

Hearing the crunch of leaves, his attention was drawn back to his right, eyes growing sharp in caution. Though this wasn't the scent of any prey he was familiar with before. It was... something else, a bit more musky that he was uncertain of. The figure revealed itself to be a raccoon, though it wasn't so big of a threat considering their sizes. He seemed about the size of his sister—if not a bit taller, thanks to his stance. Though seeing the predator made him wary, and so his ears pulled back, claws unsheathing. "It probably came to take our hunt," he frowned, though his senses were still sharp with attention. "Shouldn't take too long for us to make it back off."

Leaping at the creature with outstretched claws, he was careful to not get himself bitten or swiped at, bowling the raccoon over. It let out a small screech, growling at him in an attempt to fight back.

Thrushpaw watched with awe as his sister's skillful paws finished the creature with just a simple rake of claws. Yet, during his time of training, it was something that he was easily inspired by. He got off the creature, thoroughly impressed by Firefly's skills. It seemed that her time of training paid off, after all, as the creature went down without another growl of resistance. "Not long at all, really!" He laughed, padding back to where he had last previously left his catch at.

"Let's go back, then. I'm pretty sure the raccoon scared off all the prey possible around here already." He mewed, picking up the bird by its neck. Though he would've liked to hunt more, he figured it would be best if they didn't attract any more attention from other predators. Who knows? They might encounter a stronger one next time.
