Beetleshade padded up to the Owl Tree, flicking her ear irritably to keep bothersome snowflakes away from her face. She was meeting up with Trufflesnap again, and she was quite looking forward to seeing the Skyclan warrior. Trufflesnap had quickly gained the calico's trust with her witty, sarcastic nature that reminded Beetleshade much of herself. She'd even come to consider the molly a friend, despite the warnings against getting too close to cats from other clans. She'd never been close with many of her own clanmates outside her family, so finding friends outside her clan didn't seem like such a big deal to her. Besides, if Mottlestar and Thistlemask had any common sense between the two of them they wouldn't start anything with Skyclan. She sat beneath the shelter of the tree as she waited, the harsh wind cutting straight through her short fur and chilling her to her bones.

Beetleshade shifted in her spot, squinting into the trees ahead for Trufflesnap's familiar pelt. It felt like she had been waiting for moons, but surely that was just because she was looking forward to seeing her friend. Maybe the Skyclanner had just gotten caught up in her duties? Maybe she'd simply forgotten about their meeting. It was possible, Beetleshade forgot things all the time. But surely Trufflesnap would remember to meet someone she considered her friend? Unless Beetleshade's fondness toward the molly was one-sided. She waited a bit longer, her mood sinking lower and lower with each passing minute. Finally, she stood up, her tail lashing angrily as she stomped back toward the hollow. She was furious. She'd confided in Trufflesnap, Stars, she trusted her more than she did her own clanmates! But once again, Beetleshade found herself disappointed in the fickle nature of others. This time was supposed to be different, but alas, that was the price she had to pay for getting her hopes up. It was hard to ignore the stab of hurt she felt at the betrayal, but she vowed she would never again trust any cat but herself.

She slowed her angry charge, taking deep breaths as she tried to calm herself. This was fine. She didn't need anyone, least of all some tree-hugging Skyclanner! The possibility that something might have happened hadn't escaped her, but she was much too angry to think rationally. Besides, maybe it was for the best? Trufflesnap was a distraction, one Beetleshade couldn't afford if she was going to become Thunderclan's leader someday soon. She needed to focus on getting that pesky deputy out of her way; she didn't have time for friends. With that thought, Beetleshade pushed away her lingering feelings of hurt and abandonment, and decided to get some hunting done before she returned to camp. It would get her mind off things, even though the weather would undoubtedly be a nuisance. After a short time, she found a blackbird pecking around the roots of a tree, and she swiftly crouched, her mouth watering at the mere sight. She crept forward, placing each paw down soundlessly. Finally, she was close enough to pounce, but at that moment she stepped on a patch of ice, a barely audible crunch could be heard as it broke under her weight. It was enough to startle the bird, sending it flying away into the branches of a nearby tree.

"Stupid bird." She hissed under her breath, stomping away.
