resilience [open hunting]

It was Beetleshade's first time experiencing Leafbare, and she couldn't seem to find anything good about it, unlike some of her clanmates. It was freezing, and windy, and the only thing snow was good for was getting in her way when she tried to hunt. If it was up to her, she'd skip the entire season altogether, but for now all she could do was endure. As her belly growled, she glanced eagerly toward the fresh-kill pile, noticing that it was rather low. Well, it's not like she was doing anything important, she might as well get some hunting done.

"Anyone up for a hunting patrol?" She called. Beetleshade preferred to hunt alone, but even she had to admit the odds of bringing home prey were much better with others.

Frondpaw was curled up in a tight hall to keep out the chill when a sort-of-familiar voice rang out. Beetleshade, right? He’d seen her around, but hadn’t really interacted with her. A hunting patrol…

- well, to be honest, Frondpaw didn’t really want to go on a hunting patrol in the middle of leaf-hare. He wasn’t that good of a hunter, yet, and was pretty terrified of the idea of predators or traps, but… they still had to eat. The tabby tom rose to his paws, shaking off the snow that clung to his long fur. “I’ll come, Beetleshade,” he called, quickly grooming off some of the remaining ice. “If that’s alright with you.” Frondpaw padded towards the calico warrior, hoping she wouldn’t be mad… maybe she had just been asking the warriors, actually. Oops. Had he offended her? Stars- he hoped not- maybe he should actually just- no, he’d already called out to her. Scat.

"Sure." Beetleshade shrugged, waiting a few more moments to see if anyone else would join and then leading the way into the territory. She only hoped the apprentice- Frondpaw, if she remembered correctly -had the sense to stay out of trouble. It felt like every time Beetleshade was out with her own apprentice they ran into a predator, though that certainly wasn't Molepaw's fault. Still, since it was just the two of them they'd be ill-advised to stray too far from one another, especially with the abundance of twoleg traps strewn carelessly throughout their once majestic forest. She stopped suddenly, her ears pricked as she heard a rustle in the distance. She stalked off towards the sound with a determined stride and soon found herself face to face with a plump mouse, clearly looking for it's next meal just as she was. Crouching low, she crept toward the creature, thankful for the gloom of the forest canopy concealing her mottled pelt. When she was barely a tail's length away, she pounced, her claws digging into the rodent's flesh as it let out a terrified squeal. She finished it off quickly, relishing the sight of the fading light in it's eyes.

Sure? Okay- it wasn’t exactly an enthusiastic sure, but it wasn’t the sort of sure that made him make up an excuse to stay behind. It sounded more like Beetleshade hadn’t been expecting a somewhat-unfamiliar apprentice to volunteer, and less like she didn’t want him to come. The tabby apprentice followed behind her- somewhat nervously, admittedly. No one else had volunteered- did that mean Beetleshade was mean? She didn’t seem mean. Just quiet, but he could appreciate that. The warrior stopped suddenly, then stalked towards a sound Frondpaw’ brain just now connected to prey. The apprentice stood stock-still, studying Beetleshade’s approach. Okay. That was pretty much how he did it. Good.

Before the warrior could notice him staring, Frondpaw turned away, opening his mouth to scent for prey. There- squirrel, he thought? Either squirrel or mouse. Probably squirrel. It wasn’t quite either, he decided, following the scent into the bushes, more something in between. There it was- already dead? Huh? Wait- wait wait wait-

Frondpaw froze. He had walked straight into a trap, cleverly concealed among the bushes. The apprentice slowly, carefully, put one paw behind the other, backing out before throwing himself away. The silvery vines clanged closed on the very tip of his tail, causing the apprentice to stifle a yelp. He didn’t want to disturb Beetleshade’s hunting, and it didn’t hurt that bad, he decided, yanking himself free and leaving behind a sizeable clump of brown fur. The trap was sprung, now, and probably wouldn’t be a further threat.
