Subject: A Returned Flame [OPEN] Sat 24 Dec 2022 - 13:42
After escaping into the maze of twolegplace, it had taken Flamegaze... A bit longer than he wanted to admit to find the forest that lay beyond a long line of fence. But he'd found it, and had found a familiar river, once that he was absolutely thrilled to be able to follow.
The air was bitterly cold, cold enough to sting his paws and nose and ears as he followed the river, but Flamegaze hardly felt it as his surroundings became increasingly familiar. Home. Or, what he hoped was still home. Riverclan had been at fourtrees before the twolegs had come swarming in like foxes, and Flamegaze hoped that they had been able to return to their own territory. Fourtrees had been... Not exactly pleasant, for anyone.
The scent that drifted across the river was fresh, he realized. And very much Riverclan. Without a second thought, Flamegaze took the stepping stones at a run, far too excitable to be truly cautious now. He was so close to being home!
The ragdoll had been putting off going on a patrol, she would much rather help around at camp, fix things, assist with the Queens and make sure they were getting their food. The feeling of mud under her claws was something she rather would like to avoid. Unless it was necessary of course. Fawneye ducked out of the reeds as she prepared to head out on the border patrol. Movement in her peripheral made her stiffen in fear. She narrowed her crystal blue gaze on the figure running across the stones, prepared to yell for backup until she recognized the cream pelt for Flamegaze. She hadn't spoken to the tom much but there was no mistaking him, he was a clanmate, "Where's the fire?" she purred jokingly, instantly warming at the sight of a friendly face, waving her tail in greeting, "Welcome home."

The sight of a clanmate was a welcome one, and a loud purr worked its way from Flamegaze's throat as he nearly barreled into Fawneye. "Fawneye!" He greeted cheerfully, "I was beginning to think I'd never get away from those twolegs, they kept me and a few other clan cats in twolegplace this entire time. None of our other clanmates, which I hope is a good thing. They left a... Window, or something? Whatever they called it, it was left open and I managed to slip out before the twolegs noticed." He didn't need to mention the couple days he'd spent lost in twolegplace before he'd found the river, that was just unnecessary information.
"Did Riverclan make it back to our own territory after fourtrees? Are we staying in our own camp? Was anyone else captured?" And like that, the questions started before he could stop them. At this point, he was simply glad to see a familiar face, even if he'd never really talked to Fawneye before.
Fawyneye gave him a friendly bump on the shoulder with the top of her head, she couldn't imagine how it felt to be taken away from her home, she'd go crazy! A win...dow? Maybe it was like an entrance to their den. Yes, surely that was it. Her eyes went blank as he fed her all of this information. The female just smiled and nodded, simply happy her clanmate had lived the Twoleg attack. "You smart cat, you! We have to tell the other's you've returned. And get you a good meal. Whens the last time you had a good fish?" she meowed, the same happy expression on her maw, preparing to head back into camp. Until he asked about who else had been captured. She froze and her expression turned sour, "Rowanpaw, Sprucebark, Harebounce..they're gone.." she whispered shaking her head as a tear formed in her eye. Fawneye was sure there could be more missing, she wasn't sure if they had done a full head count. The warrior shook her head violently, ridding herself of the sad thoughts of missing clanmates, "But at least you've returned. It means there's hope for the rest of them."

The mention of food immediately made his ears perk up. "Fish... You have no idea how much I've missed real food. They gave us these weird brown pellets, they tasted horrible. Even the water we had to drink had a weird taste to it." Suffice to say, the last time he'd had good fish was probably the last time he'd been on Riverclan territory.
And then Flamegaze immediately regretted his barrage of questions as Fawneye answered, clearly stressed. His ears flattened at the news that their clanmates had gone missing, spirits immediately dampened. "Foxdung." He muttered, "That's too many cats. The Shadowclan leader was with the group I was kept with too. And a couple rude Thunderclanners. I hope our clanmates can make it back, wherever they've found themselves." He mewed. His group had managed to escape, so the others could too... Right? Flamegaze didn't want to believe otherwise.
Her nose wrinkled at the mention of Twoleg food. Being taken away from home and given things that sounded like rabbit dung for food? Ugh! So gross. The conditions Flamegaze must've endured to return home were unfathomable, it made her heart wrench at the thought of it.
Fawneye ducked through the reeds on the island where their home was nestled. She made quick work of finding the plumpest fish on the pile and giving it to their newly returned warrior. He deserves it, She told herself, we'll make sure the elders and kits are fed too of course..but warriors first just this once. They'd understand. The ragdoll brought the fish to him, not wanting for him to take another step, "Now. Eat and then we must make sure that Sandyshell takes a look at you..and then you need rest. I mean who knows how long you've traveled to get home. Oh, stars, I'm so happy you've returned!" she meowed, her words coming fast, she was starting to get choked up, she just couldn't believe it. It was a miracle, really- that Flamegaze returned. Some clanmates had thought the worst, but Fawneye always had hope. She had never gained anything from thinking negatively. She made eye-contact with Flamegaze, her eyes holding his steadily,
"They will return. Starclan will guide them home, just as they did you." Fawneye meowed reassuringly, pushing the fish closer to him, "Eat."

Flamegaze hardly had time to speak before Fawneye was making her way to the fresh-kill pile, returning with a plump fish. The sight and scent made him realize just how hungry he was, and the flame point managed a grateful smile. "Thank you." Right now the fish tasted like the best thing he'd ever had, made all the better by how lacking his diet had been in anything that tasted good. Fawneye didn't have to prompt him to eat more than once.
"It took a couple days to find my way out of twolegplace. I don't understand how any cat can know their way around that place, honestly, it's so confusing! But I found the river and followed it." Flamegaze had wondered if it had been their river, and even if he'd been going in the right direction. He'd never been off of Riverclan territory before except for gatherings and his one trip to the moonstone. The stars must've seen his plight and guided him in the right direction.
"It feels like I've been away for moons rather than a few weeks." He reflected, "I'm just glad to be home finally."
