| The little gray-striped kit sat before their mother's still body, staring down at her with a quiet, heavy melancholy. They barely knew her, only knew her as "Mom" and the provider of warmth, food, and comfort, but they were old enough to understand death. Batsong the medicine cat had said something about a sickness that took their Mom, a "whitecough". Birchkit inhaled slowly, taking in Mom's scent for the last time, and breathed out a sigh.
Now what? Mom was gone. They figured they perhaps should start looking for a new Mom, although it felt strange to...replace her. But she would want them to be safe, right? Wherever she was now. StarClan, probably. Birchkit touched Mom's fur gently with a tiny paw, then turned to leave the den. Mom deserved a nice place to lay while her spirit was in StarClan, but...they weren't sure how to do that. Maybe Batsong would know...
But Birchkit could worry about that later. They felt so...tired, and sad. Other cats around camp looked sad too. They had heard that a promising apprentice had recently been killed by a fox...Very sad.
Birchkit sat down outside the medicine cat's den, just now realizing that their cheek fur was wet as tears rolled from their eyes.
Was life always this sad? OOC: here ______________________________________ |

| Batsong had tried everything to save Birchkit's mother. Despite the shy medicine cat's best attempts, the whitecough combined with her recent kitting had proven to be too much for her as she had gone to join the ranks of starclan. Batsong felt terrible, she had lost her parents under similar circumstances and she knew the pain that accompanied such things. She had her chance to try and save Birchkit from this same fate and had failed them she felt like.
She had tried so hard to get them different herbs to get the mother well again but it had not worked. She went to be alone for a little while in her den, it felt terrible to lose a cat that she was assigned to be the protector of.
After a little while she went back out, Birchkit was still healthy and she needed to support and try and be there for them. They found Birchkit just outside of her den actually and the poor little kitten was crying. It broke Batsongs heart and she sat next to them wrapping her tail around the kit to keep them warm. "i'm so s-sorry birchkit" they whispered in a shaky stutter. ______________________________________ - signature - click to extend:

| A dark shape approached and wrapped its tail around them, and they blinked up to see Batsong there beside them. She whispered a shaky apology, an apology for their loss and an apology for not saving Mom. Birchkit pondered that for a moment, looking back down to their paws. A stray tear dripped onto their toes.
But, they were sure Batsong had done her best. This was just a part of life, right? Loss happened. It didn't make the hurting less in the moment to consider this, but in time Birchkit would be alright. As alright as one could be after the loss of Mom. They turned back up to look at the medicine cat, leaning into her touch for a little bit of comfort. "It's okay. You tried your best, Batsong. I don't blame you." they mewed, sincere, even if no smile rose to their face.
"...Batsong? Can I ask you something?" OOC: here ______________________________________ |

| Batsong purred quietly as they held the kitten close. She was grateful that the kit didn’t blame her for it altough… a bit suprised by it. This kit seemed very mature for their age. They were curious about something and batsong widened her eyes curiously yes y-you c-can ask me anything she meowed quietly looking to them. ______________________________________ - signature - click to extend:

| "Where do we put cats when they die?" The question had been rattling around in their head for a little bit, ever since that apprentice had died. Now Mom was gone too, and...part of them didn't want to leave her, or see her go away. She needed to be somewhere nice.
They didn't mean StarClan. They knew about StarClan, cats' souls went there when they died and lived there forever and ever. But what about the bodies they left behind? OOC: here ______________________________________ |

| Batsong glanced at the kit. W-well... for one d-day the body is in camp f-for cats to mourn over. Then it is taken out t-to be burried by the elders the med cat explained. She looked upwards at the sky. but life doesnt end there... y-you can still see your mother in s-starclan
glancing back to birchkit she shrugged ... she hesitiated not wanting to be too blunt with the kit but figured that they had lost their mother similar to how Batsong lost her birth parents as well. There wasnt really anything worse than that. as for the bodies? w-well to be honest... once you die there is no more use for your body. Once it is buried it slowly fades away ... into the earth. It was a heavy topic, but Batsong wasnt going to hide anything from them. Birchkit was even younger than she was when she lost her parents... She had been lucky enough that Swiftsprit and Mistysky had taken her in as adoptive mothers... She hoped she could provide some level of comfort like they had done to her to Birchkit ______________________________________ - signature - click to extend:

| Birchkit listened close, blinking owlishly. The elders buried cats. They should go talk to the elders, Mom needed a good place. She deserved it.
And the fact that bodies faded away...where did they go? How did they disappear? There was much to think about for the little kit, and all they could say was a small, "Oh..." They fell silent, prodding at the dirt with their paw. With a little sniffle, they leaned their weight against Batsong's legs, searching for comfort. Things were confusing, but interesting. It made their heart and head feel weird. OOC: here ______________________________________ |

| Coyotegrin came bustling out of the Warrior's den, a fance tangled in grief and sorrow. She had just lost her son, Goldenpaw, a few days ago. The grief had been almost all-consuming, and she struggled to push through the pain to get her duties done. But whispers around the camp, Birchkit's mother had passed. She was desperate to fill the giant hole in her heart, and though, and adopted kit wasn't Goldenpaw, it could help.
As she neared the nursery, Coyotegrin held back a sigh verbally and instead sighed internally. Batsong was already there. StarClan, the she-cat always wormed her way into every situation Coyotegrin found herself in. But this time, she had an advantage over Batsong in paternal claim over the orphaned kit, unlike when Whisperear was a kit. Having a family or a kit, even an adopted one, was against the medicine cat's code. The grieving mother slowed her pace and approached the pair.
"Batsong." She said smoothly, regarding the medicine cat with a cool, emotionless required greeting before turning to the kit. "Birchkit? I am Coyotegrin. I am so sorry to hear about your mother. I recently lost my son," and my sister, and my mother, and my father, and my brothers... "So I understand the grief you are feeling right now." She crouched down to get to kit-level with the mourning kit, her eyes filled with the sorrow for herself and Birchkit. ______________________________________ Astra inclinant... .: Coyotegrin :: Kestrelchirp :: Quailprowler : Waspswarm : Burnetpaw :. #9966ff : #cc3300 : #6699ff : #993366 : #ff9900 : #ff66cc WC T5 Warrior : WC T4 Warrior : TC T4 Warrior : SkC T2 Warrior (Bonus) : RC App "When there's nothing left to burn, you have to set yourself on fire." |

| The kit nuzzled into her legs and batsong smiled happily. She gave them a little hug and groomed down a little bit of their fur. Pawsteps approached and she glanced upward.
Batsong eyed the grieving queen and meowed a quiet quick hello back. It was no secret that the two didn’t always get along. Batsong was sorry for coyotegrin having just lost her son. She knew what it was like to lose a kit. She had lost her daughter, her parents… her adoptive parents , her apprentice. Coyote wasn’t the only one who had lost lots. In that sense they were quite similar.
Coyotes greeting was pretty cold, understandably so given all she had been through. She did love to barge into things didn’t she though? This wasn’t too dissimilar to how she had micromanaged over whisper … well it wasn’t like batsong could really adopt the young birchkit anyways. She had given that life up with her oath to medicine.
Daisybreeze emerged from the warriors den a short few moments later. She hadn’t slept well since her brothers death and had barely eaten. She got to see him at her moonstone but that was not nearly enough time to see him again. In part, she blamed batsong for it … she was the med cat so why was she not able to save her brother after all the clans safety was her job wasn’t it!!? She gave a not so subtle glare to the medicine cat her eyes red from the crying and lack of sleep she had. Being raised, there was always tensions between her parents and the med cat and it had effected her as well. The whole time she was a kit and apprentice she had wanted to please her parents and make them proud… now she just felt empty and apathetic towards things. She wanted to find that stupid fox and rip it to prices like it had done to poor golden. The camp still felt empty with out him.
Going over to the group she sat down batsong shouldn’t you be in your den preparing for things? Maybe if you were better prepared we would still have birchkits mother and golden paw she said through teary eyes that stung
Batsong laid her ears back angry and annoyed she had done her best to save both of them… in golden case she didn’t even get a chance! Still she understood daisy was grieving and her presence here clearly was not welcome. Dipping her head without a word she walked away quickly.
Daisybreeze looked down at the kit with sad eyes she used to be so energetic and competitive now she was a broken mess. She went to coyotes side and sat by her sobbing

| Two calico mollies approached, one after the other. Birchkit watched them closely, and the older one introduced herself as Coyotegrin. She had just lost her son. The apprentice, they realized with a start. The other molly rudely snapped at Batsong, then went to her mother's side and broke down into tears.
The gray tabby shuffled their paws uncomfortably. Coyotegrin seemed nice, just sad. Other Cat seemed overwhelmed, and they didn't like how she spoke to Batsong.
"I think...Batsong did her best," they mewed quietly, tucking their tail around their paws. "I don't blame her. She tried. But...I'm sorry about your son." They looked up at Coyotegrin, their expression sincere. Tears still pricked at their eyes with the pain of loss, but it felt a little better now that there was someone to share the loss with.
