Honks and Whispers [closed]

To say the young cat was excited for training had been an understatement. What wasn't an understatement, however, was just how hard everything was. So many rules to learn, so many movements to memorize and practice. It had been rather overwhelming at first, and it didn't help that their lanky frame seemed to be much more of a disadvantage to the typical Windclan fluidity than anything. But, slowly as they grew into much more proportionate dimensions, the lanky Mallardpaw had begun to finally figure it all out. It was much easier now that their legs didn't seem to stand so unevenly. With swift, long strides, the apprentice looked back towards their mentor, slowing down. Even with such large ears, they preferred to stay close to Whisperear, to make sure to properly hear whatever they had to say. "What will we be working on today?" Their brown and white tail stood tall with excitement, ears craned directly towards the other white oriental. "More hunting? I feel like my hunting isn't very good."

There was a dutiful, intense studying in their gaze as they watched Whisperear demonstate for them. Even with the disabilities that seemed to cause some trouble for the warrior, Mallardpaw looked right through them, mystified by the inherent grace that they were still able to show off. Perhaps it was just something about the way their bodies were shaped, making them more graceful in movement, or perhaps it was just something that came with practice. Either way, when it came to be their turn to replicate, Mallardpaw swallowed hard before giving a nod to Whisperear.

Taking a few strides away from where their mentor had just been at, they sniffed the air to attempt to find something. It took a bit more focus, as it was much easier to smell the blood and rabbit that had just been caught, but eventually, his senses locked onto another one. A keen gaze studied through the grass to be able to find out just exactly where it was at, and soon enough, their eyes were locked onto their target. The hare was rather plump, and thankfully, faced away from Mallardpaw. Placing paws down as gently as possible, Mallardpaw kept themselves downwind. Once close enough, they used their long limbs to recoil and jump, much like the hare itself would attempt to do. Thankfully, he'd land swiftly atop the creature, mimicking Whisperear in the killing blow to the neck. Picking it up and happily trotting over with head and tail held high, they set it down. "I noticed, it's much easier when you're downwind of the animal. They don't hear you as easily, or smell you." They commented, analyzing their performance critically. After all, simply launching at prey wouldn't help them improve.

Mallardpaw listened keenly to their mentor, giving a solid nod in response to all of the information that they were given. All of it was vital, no matter how insignificant it seemed. Something like being able to chase down a rabbit was important, after all! Their smile was wide on their maw as they went to pick up the rabbit they had caught once more, following Whisperear's lead when it came to finding a place to store the prey in the meantime. Carrying it around would be pointless, muffling both conversation, but also using energy that could be best used elsewhere. But at the same time... the thought of a hawk stealing their hard work momentarily flashed in the apprentice's mind, and they hopped from one foot to another in slight discomfort at that idea.

"Our prey will be safe from hawks, right?" They asked, just to make sure. Their gaze seemed to temporarily zone out into the expanse of the moor, looking at the grasses that flowed freely. It was all so open! After some time of staring though, Mallardpaw focused back in. "I'm excited to know the rest of Windclan, though. I'll need to, to be a good warrior." Their dedication was clear: they wanted to serve their Clan well.

Mallardpaw's nod towards Whisperear was solid as the fears were assuaged. A tinge of embarrassment burned at their cheeks for just a moment for not thinking about the solution sooner, as after all, another half to Windclan was the fact that they delved into tunnels. Digging was something that Windclan simply did. His embarrassment faded away as they picked up their first catch, following with tail held slightly high. It was a slight blow to their pride, but they bounced back fairly quickly, mimicking Whisperear's movements in preserving his catch for later.

Their attention was quickly drawn to the new sounds and scent that seemed to bulldoze their way into their nose. Its squeal, not to mention, hurt his larger ears, and Mallardpaw flattened them back to preserve his hearing. Attempting to think quickly on their paws, Mallardpaw ran around to the other side of his mentor and the squealing creature. Fangs of their own appeared as they bit down onto the long tail of the weasel, and Mallardpaw dug their claws into the ground. And yanked. Hard.
