“This is a nice spot,”
she meowed to Fawnshine, leading her into a sunny clearing with white flowers and ferns covering the grassy ground. Comfreyheart breathed in the crisp green-leaf air, taking in the plentiful prey scents. “There’s many mice around here, maybe I can show you how to catch one.” The black molly flicked her tail across her sister’s flank, inviting the medicine cat to follow her into the middle of the clearing. As warm rays blanketed her back she broke into a yawn. “Feels nice right? I’m sure the critters think so too.” An orange and black butterfly fluttered past her nose, continuing throughout the grass and plants. She grinned and turned to Fawnshine, “So are these all herbs or just flowers?”

Comfreyheart had no trouble finding things to talk about, eager to spend time with Fawnshine. She had brought the medicine cat away from her duties, telling her they both deserved a nice break. She wanted to have a good, relaxing moment with her best friend.

Having occasional walks with her sister in their territory was always pleasing. Fawnshine let out a curious purr, her eyes scanning the grassy ground in search of prey. Though she wasn't hungry, earning one to bring back to the clan would be helpful. Or simply as a gift for someone. "I wonder so. The weather and view are pleasant." She would walk beside Comfreyheart, letting out a chuckle as a butterfly fluttered by.

"There's some daisy leaves here that we can bring back. For the others, I believe we'll have to search closely to spot them." She smiled. "Other than that, these are mostly just flowers, sorry to disappoint."

“That’s alright,”
she replied sweetly, looking around at the flora, “Flowers are important too.” She bent her neck down, gently picking the stem of a wildflower before tucking it behind her sister’s ear. “They make us smile, and that’s important.”

After the past few moons full of stress and grief, she learned the necessity of finding at least a little bit of joy to keep you sane. Today she hoped to find that for Fawnshine, just in case something was weighing down on the medicine cat’s mind.

“Now let’s see about those mice yeah? I’m sure we could catch one or two, why don’t you try it out?” The molly crouched down and waited for Fawnshine to do the same. She wandered through the grass, keeping her mouth open for scents. Soon enough she could pinpoint a mouse, hiding near the edge of the clearing. She advanced, quiet and slow.

Practicing in her free-time had paid off! Comfreyheart quickly snuck up on the rodent and finished it off with a small pounce. After picking up her catch by the tail, she turned to see how Fawnshine had done.

"Flowers are special in their own way, aren't they?" She hummed. Fawnshine was caught by surprise as her sister had tucking a wildflower behind her ear. The gesture was appreciated, of course. The medicine cat returned with a smile, following the action by finding another flower. The closest one she found was a lavender — a gorgeous pale purple with its delighted elegant, yet light smell. Doing the same, she tucked the flower behind Comfreyheart's ear, opposite to hers. "Matching now, aren't we?"

Returning to the topic of hunting, she nodded, crouching as her sister did. Accurately and swiftly, Comfrey had dashed through the grass, catching her prey at an impressive speed. Warriors are named so for a reason, for sure... However, instead of a rodent similar to the warrior's catch, her eyes caught sight of a thrush. It was close enough to reach, and if she just do so carefully enough — though it flew away. How unfortunate...

The medicine cat hadn’t caught anything yet,
but you couldn’t blame her, having never been taught. Comfreyheart trotted back into the clearing, nestling her mouse in a small dip in the ground. Turning away from it she walked up to Fawnshine, lowering herself beside her. “Good crouch. Now, tell me what you can smell. The air is quite still here, but we should be able to make out something.” Comfreyheart breathed in, easily finding familiar scents of mice, vole, and shrew. Her favorite prey. But something made the fur along her spine rise. A scent she had met before, though only as dull and old tracks. Badger.

The molly whipped around, her hair standing on end as she hissed at the predator stealing her fresh-kill. Her back arched as she stepped between it and Fawnshine. The badger screeched back, taking defense as well. It’s just here for food, we can easily escape if we just back away. Normally ridding her territory of predators was of priority, but with only her and a medicine cat, it would be foolish.

But the moment her eyes caught the cub hiding behind its mother, the badger lashed out, snapping at the cats. Comfreyheart instinctively swung back, catching the end of its snout. Her stomach lurched. Rat's dung.

Fawnshine

Her nose lifted, yet, what she hoped to have scented was far better than their upcoming surprise. An unwanted one. Comfreyheart had whipped around in a hissing arch, her fur standing on end. She hadn't been able to detect the predator — so were the unfortunate consequences of not being warrior-trained. Her sense of smell was adapted to be keen to pick out herbs, and luckily enough, some might just be hidden treasures among the grass and fern.

Ears pinned back, Fawnshine would flick her tail sharply. The badger wasn't alone... And that might just be the most troublesome addition of all. Though, just a cub. It shouldn't do anything other than hiding behind its mother, yet why had they had to be here? She felt her heart drop as the creature lunged for her sister, and by StarClan's luck, she avoided the attack — counterattacking back. A low growl escaped her throat. Battle experience or not, she will assist the warrior however she could. Rearing forward to attack, she swiped at the badger with unsheathed claws, narrowly avoiding another swipe back in return. That was close.

Her heart stumbled as Fawnshine darted forward, striking the badger just as she herself had done. After the molly just barely dodged the beast’s counterattack, Comfreyheart leapt into action- and onto the mother badger. Fury engulfing her sense of fear, she was able to safely pin it, keeping its snapping fangs away from her sister’s fur. She sank her claws deep, trying to shock it still, but in defense of its young it wouldn't give in. “Fawn stay back!”

"I'll be fine, Comfrey! If distracting it to allow you to fight benefits us, I'm willing to risk it." She growled underneath low breaths, eyes still kept on the creature in front. Rather I'd do this than be a coward with my tail tucked in between. She had been helpless, and hopeless during their battle with the Dark Forest cats. How miserable that was. Her tail was as lashing as she stared the beast down, purposely wanting its attention on her. She had always been stubborn.

But she was truly risking it this time, wasn't she?

At the opportunity given by her sister, she bore her teeth, snapping at the creature's tail. It had turned back for her — but she knew to dodge the right time. Luck or not, the battle was still on.
