Sleepypaw's Warrior Ceremony

It was time for another one of Owlshriek's kits to be made into a warrior. Perchstar leapt atop the Willow Branch and called out the familiar summons: "Let all cats old enough to catch their own fish gather for a Clan meeting!"

Sleepypaw

Sleepypaw was stuck. On one paw, she was tired. Extremely tired. The river ran high, and crossing it was not easy. The duties she was given increased much faster than she expected. And, most of all, she was tired just her normal state of exhaustion. Yet, on the other paw, excitement raced up her spine Hawkshriek wasn't getting too far ahead now. And neither was Stormpaw. If he was still an apprentice in ThunderClan. Her green eyes flickered, hearing Perchstar's voice ring throughout their camp. It was time.

Rising to her paws, the apprentice strode out of the apprentice's den. Her pelt was neatly groomed, just like her mother had when she had been made an apprentice. Mother. Mapleleaf. She faltered for a short moment, then remembered the short dream with her. She was watching. She knew. She saw. With her head held high, Sleepypaw sat up right at the front of the crowd and waited.

Thankfully, Sleepypaw seemed to be awake for the summons. It would have been rather embarrassing for the apprentice if someone had to wake her for her own ceremony. Perchstar's ear flicked gently in acknowledgement, and beckoned the apprentice. "Today, we gather to make an apprentice a warrior. She has been a valuable asset to RiverClan, just like her mother, and Kitespring has trained her well. Sleepypaw, please step forward."

Sleepypaw

Returning the nod, Sleepypaw strode forward, parting from the clan. All eyes on her, she stared up at Perchstar. The same cat she slept with in the wee hours of the morning when all was too loud in the nursery. Then, the eyes on her didn't feel as judgemental. Sleepypaw relaxed, watching her leader with even, respectful eyes. How lucky she was, to be recognized by the leader. Her chest swelled at the thought. Now, apprentice--soon, a warrior.

How long ago had it been that the soft gray she-cat was a kit, wandering into the leader's den? How long had it been since Mapleleaf appeared on RiverClan's doorstep, in need of a home? Time passed quickly. And yet, thanks to time, RiverClan would acquire yet another strong, loyal warrior. It was a net positive. Still, a slight tinge of unfamiliar nostalgia pricked at Perchstar's heart as she began the ceremony. "I, Perchstar, leader of RiverClan, call upon my warrior ancestors to look down on this apprentice. She has worked hard to understand the ways of your noble code, and I recommend her to you as a warrior in her turn. Sleepypaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code, and protect and defend your Clan, even at the cost of your life?" Light blue eyes stared into the apprentice's as the leader asked the important question. Mapleleaf had made this promise, not too long ago, and had fulfilled it for her last few days of life. Now it would be Sleepypaw's turn.

"I do." She answered solemnly, putting whatever energy she could into projecting her voice through the camp. All the cats should hear her dedication. Her mother, father, siblings, mentor, Perchstar, and second mother she found in Poppyshine. Where would she be if they did not bring in her mother before she was born?

Perchstar nodded in response. It was time. "Then by the powers of StarClan, I give you your warrior name. Sleepypaw, from this day on, you will be known as Sleepycloud. StarClan honors your battle tactics and loyalty, and we welcome you as a full warrior of RiverClan." The gray and white she-cat leapt down, tail streaming behind her gracefully. Something warm stirred in her chest as she moved towards Sleepycloud, seeing the determination in her eyes. What was this feeling again? The one that she had felt for Poppyshine's ceremony? Pride. Ending the ceremony, Perchstar rested her muzzle on the new warrior's head. As their eyes met, she blinked slowly to convey her respect. Then she stepped back so that the many family members and friends could congratulate her.

Yarrowpaw jumped up and down happily from his spot in the crowd, a big dopey grin on his face. Sleepycloud! Part of him was a little jealous honestly; Yarrowpaw would be up there right behind her if Perchstar hadn’t prolonged his apprenticeship as punishment. It stung, but the tom pushed it aside— this wasn’t about him, this was about his friend!
