Fogpaw
Part of Fogpaw dreaded stepping paw outside of the medicine den.
The medicine cat apprentice knew it was kittish at best; he was expected to sacrifice everything for his clan, and his clan was expected to do the same back. He wouldn’t be attacked or belittled or even judged, but still, a nagging feeling at the base of his skull kept him hiding in the shadows, brooding. All he ever did was brood.
Fogpaw wasn’t going to lie to himself and say he didn’t know why he was so apprehensive, so on edge— it was his sisters. Not Plumpaw, of course not her, but rather Wolfblossom and Trufflepaw, and especially Birdchaser. He had made himself as estranged as possible from them as he could, struggled to even bear being around them sometimes…
Fogpaw missed when they were kits. When he loved fearlessly and unconditionally. He still loved each and every one of his littermates, no matter their opinions— Stars, he still loved his mother. He was just… afraid, he supposed. Afraid of having to ultimately confront them, oppose them, and fight them. Especially with Birdchaser and the rank she was at. One day, despite whatever misgivings Fogpaw had, he would have to serve under Birdchaser as medicine cat when she ultimately became leader. He dreaded the day.
Fogpaw crept silently out of the medicine cat den and into the shaded area just next to it, quickly adjusting himself to lounge idly as his clanmates went about their day. Since becoming medicine cat apprentice, Fogpaw hadn’t had much time to rest, so the grey tom would never turn down some free time to brood. This morning should be better than most, as long as no one came to bother him…
Wolfblossom returned to camp, a pair of birds in her jaws as she headed toward the fresh-kill pile. She was glad to finally be done with patrolling, and glanced around camp, hoping for a shady spot to rest. Her bright gaze found the medicine den and she paused, eyeing her brother's tabby pelt. He'd hardly spoken a word to any of them since they had all been kits, and had only recently become a medicine cat apprentice while Wolfblossom and Birdchaser were already warrior and deputy. It... Had been far too long, especially with everything that had happened. He was going to talk to his sister, whether he wanted to or not, Wolfblossom decided.
Mind made up, she kept one of the birds and started forward, fluffy tail waving. "Fogpaw!" She mewed, "It's been so long I was starting to forget what you looked like!" Despite the words, her tone was friendly and cheerful. "Bird?" She offered, dropping the prey at his paws without waiting for an answer.
"How's being a medicine cat? Keeping you busy?" She asked, lazily flopping to the ground next to Fogpaw with absolutely no intention of going anywhere.
When she wasn't hunting or keeping a tight eye on their borders, or brooding (a family trait, she'd noticed), Birdchaser had taken to spending most of her time under the Tallbranch. She would have sat atop it to get a better view of their camp, but that felt... awkward. Even if it had gotten easier, she still felt a little out of place being up there just for ceremonies, nevermind lounging. So she sat in its shadow tail curled over her paws and eyes steadily roaming. There were apprentices rolling each other through the dirt, or practicing their hunting crouches; kits doing much the same, although with a lot less practiced grace. Her brother, hiding in the shadow of his den, eyes cold and narrow. The sight of him immediately made the deputy's paws lift, but no sooner than she started towards him, she was reclining again. What was she meant to say at this point? When she hadn't spoken to her own brother in... in moons? The thought of it made her heart twist. They were supposed to be family, to talk and be close, and yet she couldn't bring herself to even say hello.
She was about to turn away, pretend she hadn't seen him, when another cat went marching up to him, bird swinging between her teeth. Wolfblossom. Birdchaser watched with interest as their sister padded forth letting go of her bird before rolling about on the ground. She looked like such a fool, sprawled out like that. The deputy smiled softly, letting out a quiet sigh. If Wolfblossom was bold enough to approach, she would be, too, she decided with a nod as she rose slowly to her paws.
"You're going to get dirt all stuck in your pelt," Birdchaser mewed gently as she approached, looking down at her sister with affection in her eyes. Then her gaze turned back up to Fogpaw, and in an instant it hardened– nothing cold, but distance; confusion. "At least someone can keep themselves composed," she tried teasingly, stepping around Wolfblossom to settle in at their brother's side.

Fogpaw wasn’t sure if he should laugh or cry. It was as if Starclan was mocking him— he had the audacity to ask for some peace and quiet, didn’t he? Neither of his sisters have said a word to him in moons, and now, on the single day he had time to himself, decided to show their faces?
He desperately wanted to say he was annoyed.
But he couldn’t be annoyed. Not at them, not at Wolfblossom and Birdchaser. His sisters, worlds apart in some cases. Wolfblossom seemed ready to put the past behind her in all aspects, so loving and gentle, but Birdchaser… did she still hold out a grudge for Fogpaw? She’s never been exactly quiet with her opposition to Beechfang's exile, while Fogpaw has never been quiet about his approval. They’re complete opposites, should be complete enemies.
She was his sister. He could never be her enemy.
”Hello Wolfblossom, thank you— it has been a while. My duties are… exhausting sometimes, to be honest. Especially without a mentor. But Plumpaw keeps me sane.” Fogpaw took the bird with gratitude, about to bite into it before Birdchaser arrived.
Birdchaser still looked at him with this terrible, hardened look. Fogpaw would never let anything other than controlled passiveness cross over his face, but it stung like a nettle stuck in his chest. While Fogpaw could never consider himself Birdchaser’s enemy, his sister may not have the same idea. ”Dirt on my pelt would be better than standing in this blazing heat. Some of us have thicker coats, Birdchaser. You would know this.” Thick fur runs in their family, all of them had it. ”And besides, why would I attempt to maintain composure when I have no duties to behold as of right now? Trying to find some fault in your medicine cat, deputy?” Maybe it was a low blow. Maybe Fogpaw was just irritated.
That the two medicine cat apprentices with no mentors had been busy was unsurprising. At least, she supposed, Fogpaw had been spending time with one of his siblings.
Birdchaser joined them, a gentle admonishment on her lips. "Don't make me rub dirt in your pelt, see how quickly it comes out." Wolfblossom smirked up at her sister, making no move to get up from where she'd sprawled. "Composed? In this clan?" The notion was almost enough to make her roll her eyes, though still there remained no malice in her tone. Fogpaw, it seemed, had taken somewhat more offense than Wolfblossom had, and the pale she-cat sighed.
"Oh come on, lighten up will you?" She mewed, "If you two start an argument, Fogpaw, I'll sit on you."
In an instant, Fogpaw's attention was on her; cold, like it always was. His expression was near unreadable, and the practiced neutrality of his voice did its best to cover his feelings, but it made Birdchaser's ears lower. He didn't sound mad, or look upset, or anything of the sort, really. He'd gotten snippy with her, anyway. "No, Fogpaw, I–" She stammered a little more, trying to force words out, but she couldn't quite put anything together. Find some fault in him? All she'd done was walk over! Walk over, and tease their sister, the same way she'd done their whole lives. And why prod at her rank like that? Did he resent her for her title? Or maybe it was just her face. Tail whipping through the dirt, Birdchaser turned on a smile. It was sheepish, and clearly forced, but she smiled nonetheless and stared hard at the medicine cat.
To save her from her fumbling words and leering grin, Wolfblossom– light-hearted, good-natured Wolfblossom, a stand out in their family –was thankfully there to play mediator. Distracted from staring down their brother, Birdchaser turned her attention to the warrior and, stretching out a paw, gave her sister a gentle bat across the ears. "We won't fight, don't worry. Well– I didn't come over here to fight, I don't think." Her eyes flickered back up to their brother, blinking slowly. Studying. Then right back to Wolfblossom, and the deputy smiled a little wider. Whatever had put Fogpaw in a mood, hopefully time well spent with family would help him to relax. If nothing else, they had a third cat to keep them from tearing each other's pelts off.
Fogpaw let out a deep breath. It hadn’t even occurred to him that Birdchaser wasn’t even addressing him, but picking at Wolfblossom— he was struck with sudden embarrassment that he had immediately taken a lighthearted tease that wasn’t even meant for him as a jab at his character. Birdchaser had called him composed.
He was rather stupid and hardheaded, wasn’t he? Maybe he had just assumed that Birdchaser would immediately start with aggression.
He tried to look more approachable as he settled next to Wolfblossom, turning focus onto the bird she had gifted and not the strange look on Birdchaser’s face. Maybe she was trying to make amends? Part of Fogpaw surely hoped so, he was tired of feeling resentment towards her when he could be focusing that energy on keeping his clan alive. Stars, his clan— every time he’s reminded of his new duties he feels sick, like something was pulling at the back of his brain. He hardly ever felt like he had his life together, and often hoped that Plumpaw didn’t feel the same— she had a sense of stability in life Fogpaw never got to feel.
Fogpaw gave a short chuff of a laugh at Wolfblossom, adding a snorted ”I’m almost bigger than you are, you wouldn’t be able to sit on me if you tried.” before turning back to Birdchaser, who still looked uncomfortable. It stung a little, honestly— no cat should feel so guarded around a littermate. ”Come sit with us? I won’t argue if you won’t.” He worded it so it sounded almost flippant, like he was doing her a favor, but anyone who listened in could tell it meant so much more. It was a truce, almost, a handshake. Allies instead of rivals, despite the differences. As long as Birdchaser doesn’t bring up anything, Fogpaw won’t antagonize her.
That’s an if, of course. It’s written in Fogpaw’s blood to impulsively react to every little thing.

Wolfblossom half-heartedly ducked Birdchaser's paw, whiskers twitching as her paw brushed the tops of her ears. "Good," She mewed at her sister's response. Truly, she was glad that Birdchaser at least hadn't come over to pick a fight. She knew her siblings, and they were, almost all of them, temperamental. Maybe Lichenpaw and Plumpaw somewhat less so, they seemed to be more like dad. The rest of them however, took more after Beechfang, it seemed. And Wolfblossom knew her mother feared just that. Wolfblossom rather enjoyed a good fight. Just not with family. Especially not her siblings.
Fogpaw's response to her elicited a snort from the pale she-cat. "Oh, shut up. No you're not." Wolfblossom rolled her eyes at her brother, "I'm still stronger than you. It would work." Fogpaw asked Birdchaser to sit with them, and Wolfblossom's smile widened as she relaxed. "Come on, sis. I promise not to get dirt in your pelt if you sit with us." She added playfully.
