Poppyshine was a bit nervous as she guided Sootpaw through the territory and towards the river. It was time to train Sootpaw, and she wanted to get as many lessons in as she could before she would be completely stuck in the medicine den. Still, the river made her nervous. She’d already been uneasy with the river thanks to nearly drowning in it as an apprentice, but now that Clover had been murdered at the river, it only brought more bad memories. Sootpaw didn’t have those bad memories, though, and he was still a RiverClan cat. She would make sure that nothing happened to him.
“Here we are,” Poppyshine said as they finally arrived at the river. “Now catching fish is very simple, especially in Greenleaf. You stand near the river, though not too close, as you don’t want to fall in. You wait for the sight of the scales and then strike with your claws to claim a fish.” She let Sootpaw get situated and then took her own place downstream just a little bit, much like Perchstar had done when teaching her—as a safety net, if he did fall in. Which he wouldn’t. He wouldn’t. “Go on and give it a try.”

Sootpaw followed after Poppyshine, a bright grin on his face. He was excited to be out in the territory with his mentor. Sure he had been on patrols before, but nothing beat one on one time with Poppyshine. He felt he would learn best here no matter what he learned before.
His ears remained perked, listening intently to everything Poppyshine was saying. He didn't want to mess up today. He wanted to make sure he did everything right. Even if he failed to catch something he wanted to show promise, to show he could be a good warrior and make Riverclan proud. So he nodded in response to her words, taking his spot next the river as she had indicated for him. Wait for the sight of scale... wait for the sight of scales.. wait... now! The tom struck his paw into the water, hoping that he did it right.
The tom felt his claws catch, it felt weird at first, but then he pulled, dragging the fish out of the water. A little bit too stunned by his catch that it took him a moment to remember what to do next. Amber eyes watched as the creature flopped for a moment before he realized, and then the tom stepped forward killing it quickly. Maybe not in the cleanest way that came with practice but it was still dead.
Shining eyes turned to his mentor, excitement sparkling inside of them. "How was that?" He asked with a bright smile on his face.
Sootpaw attempted to catch a fish, Successful. -3 SP

Poppyshine gave a soft cheer—loud enough to congratulate Sootpaw, but not loud enough to scare away more fish in the river. “That was wonderful, Sootpaw! Fantastic job.” She moved forward and helped push the fish back a bit so Sootpaw could try again. “You had the timing right, but with practice, you’ll be able to kill the fish in the water with your claw, rather than needing to bite down onto it. It helps to flick your paw in a curved motion, so the claws dig into the fish. Let’s see if I can catch one to show you.”
She looked back to the river and leaned forward a bit, her claw raised. When she saw scales shimmer in the water, she lashed forward. She curved her paw as she’d instructed Sootpaw to do, and when she pulled the fish out of the water, it wasn’t moving. “It will definitely become easier with practice. But you’re already off to a great start.”
Poppyshine tried to catch a fish and was successful! -3SP.

Sootpaw listened intently as she spoke of what he could do better. He would take her advice to heart knowing that if he applied it he could become a better warrior and make the clan proud, and that is what he wanted most of all. So when she turned to show him what she meant, amber eyes followed her form, watching closely but not close enough to disturb the fish. When she had caught it, a bright grin grew on his face once more. "Got it! I will try to do that next time." He was glad that she was happy with his progress so far. Hopefully he could get it better this time.
The apprentice turned back to the water, keeping an eye out for any movement, any sign of scales. When he saw one he struck out, trying to make sure he did what she showed him. This time he had managed to do what she had showed him. It wasn't perfect, still messy, but at least it was dead when it came onto the shore this time. "Was that better?" He asked.

Poppyshine lit up when Sootpaw adjusted and took her instructions to heart. “Very good!” she purred. “You can improve instantly. You’re a great learner, Sootpaw. It won’t be long at all before you’re easily pulling fish up left and right.” She smiled at him and looked to their small pile of fish between them. Their clan really was doing wonderfully this greenleaf. “You and all of your siblings are learning so quickly. You certainly have your father’s talent.”

Sootpaw couldn't help but puff out his chest a little bit as his mentor spoke highly of him. He knew his father was a good warrior, but to hear that he was talented, and Sootpaw shared that talent was new. He just hoped he could make the clan proud like Owlshriek does. He would just have to continue to work hard. He could do it, his mentor was the deputy after all.
"What now?" He asked looking at Poppyshine. He didn't know if they were supposed to continue hunting or if they needed to take what they caught back to camp.

Poppyshine looked to their little pile one more time and then to the river. RiverClan had been doing wonderfully this greenleaf. It was rare that a hunting group came back with less than two or three pieces of prey. While they certainly could sit and gather more prey, it would only make it harder to carry it all back with them.
“Let’s head back with what we have,” she mewed. “We can add it to the pile, you can eat a little, and then we can go on a quick border patrol to make sure you know where all of the border markers are.” She bent down and picked up her fish by its tail. Through gritted teeth she asked, “Can you carry both of yours?” They were both his catches—he deserved to walk proudly into the clan with both of them in his jaws, if he could manage to carry them.
