Dreamy First Day (c)

Dandelionflight awoke from her slumber as the pale morning light streamed into the warrior's den. Today would be the first day of Plumpaw's training! She walked out into the clearing, careful not to wake up anyone still sleeping. She stretched and let out a big yawn before bounding over to the apprentice's den. Dandelionflight ducked through the entrance and made her way over to where Plumpaw was sleeping. She nudged her apprentice with a paw and meowed, "Wake up, Plumpaw. It's time for your first day of training." She left the den and waited for Plumpaw to follow.

It was entirely too early for any cat to be awake, according to Plumpaw. At the sound of her mentor's voice, she curled deeper into her nest, laying her tail over her nose. Maybe if she pretended not to have heard, they could reschedule the training session for a more reasonable time? After laying motionless for a few more moments, Plumpaw decided the effort was futile, finally dragging herself from her nest, stopping to shake the moss from her pelt before heading out to join her mentor.

"m'kay, I'm ready." She mumbled, though she ended the sentence with a wide yawn that suggested the only thing she was ready for was more sleep.

Once Plumpaw had appeared and signaled to her that she was ready to head out, Dandelionflight smiled and led the way into the forest. She looked back every so often to ensure her apprentice kept up. Once they arrived at an open clearing, she stopped and turned to Plumpaw. "Okay, we're going begin with hunting. A hunting crouch is the first step to catching something, sooo we can start with that! I'll demonstrate it first and then give you tips," she explained. Dandelionflight fell into the familiar position, perfected through her training and many patrols. "You'll want to keep as low to the ground as possible. If not, any prey you're going after will see you, and that's not what we want to happen! Your tail should be kept just above the ground and your eyes locked on the target," she continued before stepping away. "I want to go over there," she meowed while pointing a claw towards the edge of the clearing, "and pretend this stick is a bird!" She grabbed a stick from the underbrush and placed it a reasonable distance away. Afterward, she nodded to Plumpaw, showing her that she was ready.

Plumpaw had been hoping the brisk walk through the forest would wake her up a bit, but by the time they stopped, she was still struggling to shake away the sleepy haze. She took the chance to sit down while Dandelionflight explained the hunting crouch, her head cocked slightly to the side as she watched the demonstration. She was a bit nervous to try the move out for herself, it didn't seem all that difficult, but you never knew with these things. Suddenly she wished she'd spent more time practicing as a kit and less time sleeping.

It was a relief to have a stick to practice on for her first time, as sticks couldn't exactly get up and run away, unlike prey. She crouched low to the ground, trying her best to mimic Dandelionflight's positioning. I wonder why she's called Dandelionflight? She doesn't exactly look like a Dandelion.. Plumpaw thought idly to herself as she held her tail low to the ground, fixing her eyes on the stick a few tail-lengths away. Then again, I don't think I look much like a plum! Now that I think about it, I've never even seen a plum. How odd...

Distracted by her own thoughts, Plumpaw didn't realize she'd been sitting in the same spot, for a bit longer than she should have been. She felt her fur heat up with embarrassment and focused on her task once more, beginning to creep toward the stick. It felt a bit awkward at first, but as the further she went the more comfortable she was, and she started to feel a bit more confidence. Once she reached the stick she bunched her muscles and pounced, darting forward and landing a bit too heavily, causing the flimsy twig to snap beneath her weight. Whoops... Oh well.

"I caught it Dandelionflight!" She exclaimed, eyes gleaming as she trotted back over to where her mentor was waiting.

"D'you think I'd be able to catch a real bird?" Plumpaw wasn't exactly sure how well she'd do, but she was ready to try.

Dandelionflight watched with satisfaction as Plumpaw pounced on the stick. She was doing well for a new apprentice! "I'm sure you will! And speaking of real birds, let's go look for some," she meowed. Dandelionflight trotted off again, in search of prey. A small bird flew down from the treetops and began to hop around the base of a tree. "You try and catch this one, I'll get the next one," she whispered to her apprentice, careful to not alert the bird.

Dandelionflight smiled at Plumpaw as she returned with a bird. "Good job," she whispered to her apprentice, as she was trying not to scare off any prey. She began to stalk around, looking for more prey. After a bit, a crow flapped down from the trees above. She crouched down and slowly made her way towards it. She pounced on it, but it managed to struggle out of her paws. Before it could get away, she leaped after, snatching it from the air. She bit down on its neck until its thrashing stopped. It was a sloppy kill, but the crow was large enough to feed a few cats.
