Honey's First Prey [C]

Honeypaw was trying very hard to stay still and calm as Iceheart instructed him, but, well. Honeypaw is not known for his skills at staying calm. His tail trembled excitedly as he nodded along to Iceheart’s words. A brief thought makes him think of the last time he tried to hunt, and for a moment his blood runs cold and his tail stills. Then he quickly shook himself out of that particular thought process. They’re in the pines, not in the marshes. There’s not as much water here. Just mud.

He opened his mouth at Iceheart’s instructions and breathed deeply. Eventually he caught the sharp scent of a lizard not that far away. He turned towards the source of the scent and dropped down into a crouch, beginning to slowly approach. He quickly made sure that there was no water anywhere in that direction, a small shiver of fear passing down his spine. Once he ensured that and he saw the lizard among the pines he wiggled in preparation for his pounce, then leapt forward.

And landed! The lizard wiggled underneath Honeypaw’s grasp until he bent down and swifty bit, killing the lizard. He picked up and turned around, holding it in his mouth and looking at Iceheart with bright excited eyes. “Iceheart, I did it!” He cried, muffled by the prey in his mouth. “I caught it! Did you see, did you see?”

Honeypaw used 3 SP and caught a lizard! Honeypaw is now at 57/60 SP.

Honeypaw let out a loud purr at the combination of the praise and the mild affection, straightening up and puffing out his chest just a bit. “Okay, Iceheart!” He meowed. While the excitement was still loud and clear in his voice, he was sure to pitch it lower so he didn’t disturb nearby prey.

He watched Iceheart with rapt attention, unconsciously dropping into a bit of a crouch to mimic hers to try and get it right. He let out another purr of delight when Iceheart made her catch. “We’re doing great!” He meowed.

He looked around, setting down his lizard so he could sniff the air properly. He brightens and touches Iceheart’s shoulder with his tail, then nods his head towards a big leaf. There a frog sits peacefully, waiting for an insect to buzz by. He looked at Iceheart hopefully, silently asking if he should go for it.

Honeypaw grinned back at his mentor, amber eyes brightening further with determination. He turned back to the frog, dropping into a hunter’s crouch. He prowled forward, doing what he remembered Iceheart doing moments before as well as trying to remember the advice she gave him. He kept his tail tucked, his movements careful and deliberate as he approached the frog. Then, when he was close enough, the wind ruffling his fur, he pounced.

Unfortunately, he doesn’t quite judge the distance quite right, and when he launched himself forward, he landed just beside the frog instead of right on top of it, only managing to swipe uselessly at the frog’s hindlegs before it bounded off into the underbrush.

Honeypaw plopped down, fur ruffling with embarrassment at his fumble. “Dang.” he says, pouting a little bit.

Honeypaw tried to catch a frog, and missed! Better luck next time, Honey. He is now at 54/60 SP
