There was not much for Iceheart to do at the moment, with her training of her own apprentice already finished and no patrols being assigned to her. However, she was still quite antsy. It had been a long time since she had this much energy and nothing to do with it. It didn’t take long for her to seek out one of the many apprentices who took up ShadowClan. It seemed every day there was a new one for Iceheart to try and get to know. When she spotted one she didn’t recognize much, she approached.
“Hello,” Iceheart said to Vixenpaw. “I haven’t had the pleasure of an official conversation with you. What are you up to today?”

Vixenpaw jumped as Iceheart spoke from behind her. she whipped around to face the brown she-cat. forcing her neck fur to lay still, Vixenpaw gave a weak smile, "Uh, I was supposed to hunt for the elders, but... I'm not too sure where to find the best prey," she mewed apologetically, dipping her head. in reality, every apprentice knew that the Pine Grove was the best place to hunt, but an extra paw would be really helpful.
"Could you show me?" Vixenpaw asked, forcing her green eyes to widen and her ears to pin to the back of her head.

Iceheart gave Vixenpaw a nod and gestured for her to follow. “Certainly. We can go to the pine grove; that’s the easiest area to hunt in.” They began their journey together and Iceheart glanced at the apprentice. She wished that she had spoken with the apprentices of ShadowClan more than she had. She scarcely knew anything about Vixenpaw. “How has your training been going?”

Iceheart nodded at Vixenpaw’s explanation, regardless of how vague it was. When asked about her own apprentice, she mewed, “Good. He’s doing well.” She didn’t mention that he was lagging behind on his training, because that was entirely her own fault. Honeypaw was ready to learn how to battle, but her own fear over what could happen to him has kept her from teaching. Her stomach churns with fear and shame and she quickly pushes it away.
She looked up, shaking her head free of thoughts, and they grew close to the Pine Grove. “While the Pine Grove is the best area to catch prey, it is also frequented by Twolegs, so we must wait and ensure that they aren’t around before we start hunting.”

They arrived and Iceheart sniffed around for any sign of prey. It didn’t take long for her to catch the scent of something. She looked to Vixenpaw and nodded with her head in the direction of the scent. “Good luck,” she mewed in a low voice. “Show me what you’ve learned thus far.” Vixenpaw was the one who had wanted to go searching for prey for the elders. Iceheart didn't want to potentially take a piece of prey from Vixenpaw if that was the case.

Vixenpaw felt a twinge of disappointment that Iceheart didn't offer to help her hunt, but did not say anything as she tasted the air. the warm scent of frogs bathed her tongue. the grey-and-white she-cat dropped into a crouch and slithered forward, careful to keep her tail and ears still, and her movements gentle and soft, so as to not alert the prey. as she reached pouncing distance, she stopped. the frog leaped about on a log. how would she reach it? there was no way she could not alert it if she jumped so high.
instead of pouncing, Vixenpaw crawled around the log until she was at it's roots. the frog was a tail-length away from her. the log's roots and bark scratched her face, making it hard to see her prey. Vixenpaw narrowed her eyes and leaped, paws outstretched to grasp her prey. the frog sensed her and jumped away from her paws. Vixenpaw shifted her weight to one of her hindlegs and turned, cuffing the frog mid-leap and sending it crashing to the ground. thankfully, the mushy floor softened the impact and no sound was made. while the frog was still dazed, Vixenpaw darted forward quickly and gave it the killing bite.

Iceheart had never seen a technique like hiding in the roots, and she wasn’t sure it did more good than harm given how the frog had attempted to escape—but Vixenpaw had still managed to catch her prey, and Iceheart figured that was good enough. She mewed, “Good job. The elders will be pleased to have a fresh meal.”
She paused when she scented another piece of prey nearby. Her tail perked and she breathed it in deeply. Vixenpaw had already caught one piece of prey, so trying to catch her own surely wouldn’t hurt.
Iceheart lowered on her paws and treaded carefully toward the scent. She peered past some brush and her whiskers raised with excitement. She thought that she'd recognized that scent; it was rabbit. The same prey that she had somehow managed to catch during leafbare last season. This one was bigger and clearly had more meat on its bones than the one from last season, and it made Iceheart's mouth salivate. She took a deep breath to center herself before continuing on. Once she got close enough, keeping in the rabbit's blind spot, Iceheart lashed out and dealt a killing blow to the rabbit. When it lay limp, she sat up and nodded in satisfaction. Turning over her shoulder, she called, "We are both in good luck today, it seems."

Vixenpaw frowned as Iceheart caught a rabbit. "Yes, luck," she mewed, for once not hiding the disgust in her voice. she whipped around and tried tasting the air. Hare. she narrowed her eyes and crouched, approaching the quarry slowly. suddenly, she sprang up, claws extended. Vixenpaw grabbed the hare by the hindleg and flipped it over, while the hare struggled under her grip and kicked up dirt. Vixenpaw struggled to keep her balance as the hare bucked around, and finally managed to lean forward and kill it off.

Iceheart’s eyes narrowed at Vixenpaw’s voice, but she was off grabbing a hare before she could say anything. She watched Vixenpaw with a steely expression, waiting for her to finish, before approaching again. “Do you always speak with such a tone to your warriors?” she asked in a flat voice.

"No, usually I pretend that life is sunshine and rainbows and that nothing bad happens at all, and ignore the fact that I have no littermates and no parents" she replied, this time not in a sarcastic tone, but in a bitter tone. what was the point of hiding? Iceheart, of all cats, should know what she meant. if not, well...
