Thalia slipped out of camp to practice her hunting, as she often had. She was long past apprentice age by now, but while her skills had improved with time they were still decidedly lacking, especially compared to the warriors who had learned all their lives when she'd only really had to learn how to hunt after coming to ShadowClan. Besides, there was a secondary benefit to this little routine- the camp sometimes felt more than a little suffocating now, bringing back all her worst memories. The Dark Forest cats could follow her if they wanted, but she needed to space to wander; and besides, all she wanted was to catch some prey.

After walking a short distance - not very far - there was a lizard; long tail and scales that were impossible to mistake. She saw it before she caught the scent, but slowly stalked toward it all the same. She pounced, but found that she'd jumped too early and too far, landing a tail-length further than she should have. The lizard, free to live another day, scurried away.

Cursing her luck, she nonetheless pressed on toward the pine grove. It reeked of twolegs, but it was a good place to hunt for things that struggled to thrive in the marsh. She caught the scent of a rabbit - not something she'd expected to find, given that they weren't exactly known for being ShadowClan prey. They were, however, known for being hard to catch.

But if she wanted to improve her skills, she had to be willing to try and fail. Trying to learn from her past mistakes, she carefully followed the trail, judging when to pounce; and this time, her dedication paid off, managing to swiftly pin it under her paws and end its life.
