Hunting. No, I don't have a better name for this. (Closed)

Rookfire padded towards the apprentice den. The black tuxedo had begun to assimilate back into ShadowClan, but the Dark Forest still remained in his mind. He knew that they were probably here for the long run, but he still couldn't believe the clans would just give up yet. He remembered when the Asylum took over, when everyone had thought they were completely victorious at the end. Meanwhile, the clans worked on a resistance movement, which eventually led to Asylum's quick fall. Of course, this time they couldn't just cut off the head and expect the rest of the Dark Forest to give up. But he couldn't lose hope. There had to be something they could do.

Perhaps he could resist in a quiet fashion. This wasn't the first time he ever had an apprentice, but it was his first as a warrior, and hopefully the first he would train fully. Peeking inside the apprentice den, he noticed his apprentice. His black fur blended in with the darkness of the den, but thankfully the black tuxedo noticed his shadow. "Hey, Snakepaw," he said, nudging the tom awake. "Time to get up. It's training time."

He'd been having a particularly good dream - his jaw snapped freely with a satisfying clang upon each close. But he longed to sink them into something, anything and... Snakepaw's eyes opened, his jaw wide and ready to strike. Before him was a black and white warrior. Sitting there with his mouth still open, Snakepaw tried to remember the cat's name. Rookfire. It was his mentor. He couldn't bite his mentor, could his? Slowly, the black tom shut his maw and stared at Rookfire with bright, yellow eyes. Not responding immediately, his limbs stretched out, casually kneading the ground. Finally, Snakepaw rose and started towards the den entrance, "Okay then, let's go."

Snakepaw's maw was opened wide, ready to sink his teeth into something, which concerned Rookfire. The black tuxedo had heard of the young apprentice's tendency to bite others, and he would definitely prefer to not get bitten rather than the alternative. Still, if Snakepaw did bite him, Rookfire could try to help him. The days he spent as a medicine cat rushed back at him. Whenever queens needed to bite something to take their mind off the pains of kitting, they usually bit a stick. Though Rookfire didn't think that taking a stick from Basilbloom would be the best, they could probably find a good enough stick for Snakepaw to bite in the Pine Grove.

"Okay, we're going to the Pine Grove today. I'm gonna teach you the basics of hunting, maybe a little herb gathering afterwards." The black tuxedo gave Snakepaw a grin. "Okay, let's head out! Just follow my tail, since the marshes can be dangerous if you're too reckless." Leading Snakepaw through the marshes, the black tuxedo began telling his apprentice about a story he had. "When I'd just become six moons old, I was so confident that I could navigate the marshes by myself that I did so without a care in the world. I almost got sent to StarClan that day. Iniko had to pull me out." The black tuxedo turned back to his apprentice, making sure that the tom wasn't getting bored. "After that day, I'd learned my lesson. Now, I know the marshes like the back of my paw, but that takes a lot of time of getting used to."

When they reached the Pine Grove, Rookfire smiled at his apprentice. "Okay, Snake, we're here!" he said, grinning at his apprentice. "This is the Pine Grove. It's a great place to practice hunting, and you can grab a stick here too." The black tuxedo beckoned Snakepaw towards him. "So, when you're hunting you first try to find out where any prey is, usually using your senses of sight, smell, and hearing. Next, you get into a hunter's crouch, making sure you're staying upwind of your target so they don't smell you. Once you get close enough, you pounce at them." Noticing a mouse scurrying around the Pine Grove, the black tuxedo crouched down. "How about I demonstrate?"

Getting into his hunter's crouch, the black tuxedo began stalking the small rodent. Making sure to stay upwind, the black tuxedo got closer to the rodent. Eventually, he got decently close, enough to pounce at it. Springing forward, Rookfire sank his teeth into the mouse, nipping it at the neck. Turning to Snakepaw, mouse in his mouth, he attempted to speak "Also you need to nip the prey at the neck to kill it," he said, barely understandable. Digging a hole, he placed the mouse in the hole before filling it up again. "Also, you bury the prey after killing it so that a predator won't steal it while we're hunting for more prey." The black tuxedo waved his tail, making way for Snakepaw to catch his own prey. "Now it's your turn, Snake," he said. "I know you got it in you!"

He followed after Rookfire, ears flickering about in every direction as he half-listened to his mentor. However, the black and white warrior said several things that caught his attention. Hunting? Herb gathering? For some reason, the idea was entirely appealing. Without thinking, Snakepaw ran his tongue over the rows of sharp fangs in his maw. Soon he would be sinking his teeth into flesh and shredding little bits of herbs. Maybe that was not what Rookfire had in mind but it was certainly going to be at the forefront of his thoughts until the desire was satisfied.

Even though he continued to keep his belly low to the ground like he normally did, Snakepaw seemed a tad more engaged as his ears pricked. There was talk of the marshes being dangerous. To him, it spoke of challenge. Maybe some time the apprentice would dive deep into the most intimidating of sodden depths. Tucking away that idea, he mumbled to himself, "I want to see how deep they go."

Before long, Rookfire was explaining more on hunting. Given his interest in wanting to actually catch something, he payed attention. The only true acknowledgement that the young tom understood was a twitching tail tip and flickering ear. He raised his nose and parted his maw to suck in the air just like the elder tom. It hardly took any time at all for Rookfire to catch a mouse between his claws. Snakepaw's teeth ground together in anticipation. Admittedly, the praise from the older tom spurred him on. A soft grin crossed his maw. There was a bird ahead. His first live target, and one that he did not have to hold back on...

Then it was gone. Before he even managed to take more than a couple pawstep forward, the bird had fluttered away. Snakepaw froze, jaw agape as he watched it fly away. The fur along his spine bristle and he glared up with a frown, "Fox-dunged bird. Why didn't it just stay still?"

Rookfire watched Snakepaw begin stalking the bird nearby. Before the young tom could get to the bird, though, it flew away back into the trees. "Unlucky," the black tuxedo said. "That's a part of hunting, Snake. You did everything right, but the bird just happened to take off. It was outta your control." The warrior could tell that Snakepaw was eagerly looking to sink his teeth into the bird once he caught it. Now that it left his paws, he was antsy to sink his teeth into something.

"Hey, Snake, how 'bout we go find you a stick to bite and come back to hunting a little later?" The black tuxedo began searching for a stick for Snakepaw to gnaw. He didn't expect Snakepaw to not have a want to bite something - he would have grown out of it by now if that was the case - but if he bit, say, a stick instead of one of his clanmates, it would be better for everyone in the clan. Eventually, the black tuxedo found a perfect stick. Big enough to not break after being bit, but small enough to comfortably fit in Snakepaw's mouth. "Hey, Snake!" he said, smiling back at his apprentice. "Here you go, Snake!" he said, placing the stick down at his apprentice's paws. "A stick ain't gonna complain if you bite it. If you ever need to bite something, you can bite this."
