RiverClan Territory - Midday
Poppypaw wanted to get out of camp for a bit, both to clear her mind and to help the clan itself. Perhaps go hunting for a bit of prey. Not wanting to go alone, she’d invited Rushpaw with her. She hadn’t spent much time with Rushpaw outside of a couple instances around camp, and she hoped that she could get to know the cat more on their outing.
“How has training been for you?” she asked as they made their way out of camp. “Your mentor is Flywhisker, right? Your dad?” She stepped over small puddles where the river acting as the border of their camp had trailed off into smaller pools off from the main river itself. “I hope he’s not too hard on you.”
The sun was warm and Poppypaw happily lifted her face up to feel it. Newleaf had been wonderful since it arrived and she was eager to find more prey now that the harsh season had left them. When they arrived at the first river that surrounded their camp, she carefully moved to where the river ran the lowest and stepped over some stepping stone rocks that protruded from the water.

Rushpaw was surprised by the invitation but was quick to accept. Since she had been injured by that Thunderclan cat, he'd found himself wondering quite often about how her recovery was going. Based on her gait, his denmate seemed to be healing up well enough. Regardless, he thought asking anyways wouldn't be a bad thing. Just in case she needed any help while they were out. The words were on his tongue but Poppypaw broke the silence first. He'd been so focused on the one question circling in his mind, it took the large tom a moment to recover so he could properly answer.
"Oh, uh, yeah it's been great. Flywhisker is a great mentor. I really like training with them. It's nice to keep learning from a cat who has been teaching me since kithood. Other cats might not like having a parent for a mentor but they're the only one I've got so." Rushpaw shrugged slightly, eyes trailing down to her paws and watching their path as he followed in pursuit. While she avoided the water with delicate steps, the tom slid right in, enjoying the sensation. Given how could it had been, he'd hardly had a chance to swim. Now seemed like the right moment. And with Poppypaw too? Even better.
"It's a good day for swimming. Especially now that the sun had begun to thaw everything out. Would you want to join me? For a little bit?" The bright green eyes fixed the she-cat with question, a warm and hopeful smile behind them. Although they had come out here for something more productive, there was some time to waste, and it was always good to get swimming practice in. He silently willed her to join him instead of pressing on ahead.

Poppypaw
It was nice being out in the sun at the river. Poppypaw looked over at Rushpaw and gave him a smile as he talked about his mentor. “They’re not all you’ve got, though! You’ve got all of RiverClan at your side too. It might not be the same as family, but it can be just as important.” Poppypaw never met either of her parents, and so had little familiarity with what really made a parent more special from any other cats. Rushpaw seemed to think of it differently, but she hoped that he didn’t let it get to him.
When he invited her into the water, Poppypaw went still on the stepping stone. Her tail flicked anxiously and she kneaded the ground to quell her own anxiety. “Oh I’m not the best…swimmer,” she admitted meekly. It was embarrassing, being a RiverClan cat that was afraid of water. She hadn’t even realized how afraid she’d been since she nearly drowned with Perchfall, until she tried to go out on a hunting patrol by herself and discovered that stepping into even the shallow pools by the camp filled her with terror. “The last time I tried to swim, it didn’t go well. I’m worried about it happening again.”

Enjoying the feeling of the water lapping at his coat, and the sun along his back, the tom had sunk into the water. His nose was just over the surface with his eyes peering up at Poppypaw. He could have easily stayed like this forever, relishing in the sensation. Listening to the words of his denmate, his ear twitched. All of Riverclan at his side? That was certainly a comforting though. With just her alone, he felt contented. A whole clan was so much more. An internal warmth seemed to seep through his pelt and underneath the water his maw twisted upwards into a smile.
He noted the way she'd paused at his invitation. Rushpaw straightened up, breathing in the fresh air as he waited for a response. The one that came caused his features to grow more serious, almost stoic. But there was concern shining beneath the surface; it hadn't left sense witnessing her injuries but it intensified in that moment. However, there was something different about this situation - something he had to offer. Padding slowly over, with steps that were water-logged, he stopped next to the stone and stretched upwards to grow closer.
"If you want to try again, I'll be right here with you. I can't imagine how terrifying that must have been but... I'd love to see you keep going when you're ready, of course." Rushpaw meowed, his voice low, filled with genuine expression. He'd never known being any cat other than himself and it was easy to offer such comforts to a cat whose aura was so easy to enjoy. The russet tom's nose was oddly close to hers and he pulled back ever so slightly, ears heating up in embarrassment. There was a sheepish grin that crossed his maw, quickly twisting into a warm smile, "Lead the way, Poppypaw, in water or on land."
One paw rested on the base of the smooth stone as he looked expectantly up at the she-cat. It was nice to leave camp, to feel some relief from the overwhelming turmoil mounting within their older clanmates. And it was nice to have a friend too. He hoped she felt the same way.

Poppypaw
Poppypaw watched Rushpaw swim through the water and peer up at her through the surface and her heart almost ached. The water did look very nice; no longer freezing now that leafbare had been around for a bit. She wanted to reach out and join him, but the thought made her stomach tighten. It was impossible, surely. No matter how much she wanted to try swimming, the fear would never leave her. She was certain of it.
Yet…Rushpaw seemed so warm and inviting. Being with any RiverClan cat always made her feel safer and more at ease. It was what got her into trouble at the river before, because she was so carefree with Perchfall there. Even with that knowledge, however, she lowered herself down to laying on the stones, being closer to Rushpaw as a result. She listened to his words and smiled softly at his gentle invitation. It filled her with sudden confidence, like she could do it so long as he was here. They had planned to go out to hunt, but…
She looked back at the water. Her reflection stared back at her, looking wet and warped by the ripples. She tentatively touched the surface with her paw. The feeling of the water made her fur suddenly stand on end as she yanked her paw back. Poppypaw closed her eyes and breathed slowly. She dipped her paw in again. When no current suddenly swept it back, she relaxed and opened her eyes again.
“Do you…really think it would be okay?” she asked softly. It felt foolish. The irony of her being a RiverClan cat afraid of water struck at her again, but not as deeply as before. Rushpaw hadn’t laughed at her or been cruel. He was understanding. It made her feel safe to express such an embarrassing fear, especially when he was volunteering to help her with it.

Instead of pulling away, the she-cat lowered herself to the rock. That alone was a reassurance. Rushpaw stood a little straighter, feeling more confident in his pursuits, and entirely focused on her wellbeing. It meant a lot to him that she was even willing to consider coming closer to the water rather than carrying on. The apprentice was just beginning to get to know Poppypaw; they had interacted on a few occasions and seen each other in passing, but this was different. He felt like in these moments he was truly being exposed to something beneath the surface, a thing he'd never really considered.
Since he was so young, friendships had just began to bud. He was learning the many things that this world entailed and how it was bigger than his own sphere. Previously, he thought little more than of himself and his littermates, Flywhisker as well. Now, it seemed like his fellow denmate was going to open his eyes to the the grander picture. Poppypaw was part of life as was the rest of the clan. Even though his ears were still warm, the fluttering in his chest had stilled slightly with this growing certainty. The soft words touched his ear and brought a reassuring smile to his maw.
Instead of pulling away and further indulging his own embarrassment, he leaned into Poppypaw, "It'll be alright. You can lean on me too." The russet tom took a step to the side, causing ripples in the water around him. There was plenty of room for the she-cat to slip into the water from her current position and it would put her right at his side. Rushpaw's nose touched her paw gingerly looking up at her, "No pressure. I just figure it might help, if I'm here, right?"

Poppypaw
The thought of entering the water sickened Poppypaw. Simply touching it with her paw had almost been too much to bear. If not for Rush being there, she never would have even touched the water. Also, if not for Rushpaw being there…she never would be considering it. The idea of entering the river still terrified her, but Poppypaw found a small seed of courage blooming within her. Rushpaw promised that he would be there to help her. She was not alone, the river was not fast, and the water was shallow. She wouldn’t drown here.
Poppypaw released a shaky breath. She looked at Rushpaw one more time, finding encouragement in his eyes, and it granted her that courage. Though she had to close her eyes, she pushed herself forward and let her forepaws dunk into the river. For the briefest second, there was nothing and they floundered, kicking up a bit of water before they found solid purchase on the ground below. She had to tilt her head back to keep her nose above the surface. Poppypaw didn’t stop there, though, as she then pushed forward, hissing to herself as she dunked the rest of her body into the water. She pushed her face up against Rushpaw’s, needing the stable promise of him being present beside her. When she felt his cheek to hers, she slowly began to relax. The mud was squishy below her paw pads, but not unstable. The water lapped gently against her face instead of rushing and taking her body. It was not rapid and unbearable and chaotic; it was peaceful and calm and warm.
She finally opened her eyes and released a shaky breath. Her eyes looked over to Rushpaw and, still with her head tilted back so her entire face was above the water, she gave him an uneasy smile. “N-Not…so bad,” she whispered. She didn’t even sound convincing to herself.

He was shocked to see her prepping herself to slip into the water, and further surprised as droplets from her descent scattered across his maw. Rushpaw's eyes squeezed shut in an effort to avoid the spray and his head instinctively ducked back slightly. Quickly, he recovered, shuffling closer to the she-cat. As she found his cheek and leaned into him, the russet tom had grown a tad more serious. But, the sensation from being so close to her, alongside her, it was unlike anything else. The trust that she showed him by this simple act. It was incredible. He was grateful and in an instant had vowed himself to never harming this fragile thing between them.
At her words, Rushpaw moved his chin to settle on the top of her head ever so gently. With his tail across her back, the tom waited a moment. His whiskers twitched at the soft words. It bothered him to hear her so uncertain and he wanted to changed that, to help her move past it, "Not bad at all. You got this." Taking a slight step forward, the apprentice tried to guide her. It only occurred to him then that perhaps he'd been a bit forward, "Is this alright? I mean, are you okay?" Ears heated up. Going between a self-conscious mind and being wholly focused on her. It was an odd thing to wrestle with for such a young tom and it caused him to feel even more helpless than kithood.

Poppypaw
She tried to take deep breaths as she stood in the water, but despite all input to her senses telling her that she was okay, Poppypaw still felt like she was around to start floundering and get lost in the toss and turn of the water. Another deep breath still didn’t help her and she tried to focus on Rush and his tail on her back. It was just water.
Poppypaw cracked open an eye to look at Rush and gave him a shaky smile that held none of her usual bright confidence. “I-I, um…I’ve been…better,” she mewed weakly. “I thought j-just jumping in would help but…ahh…Might be a bit worse…” When he moved slightly to help guide her, she pressed against him, still wanting the comfort of his frame. She moved her paws through the mud beneath the surface of the water, and when she didn’t get washed away with each step, that helped ease her. Maybe.

"Okay. Okay." He muttered softly, worried he'd pressured her into something that made her uncomfortable when he just wanted to help. Poppypaw clung to him and selfishly, he relished in the warmth for a mere moment before trying to think of what to do. Maybe treading the water wasn't good or swimming quite yet; she wasn't ready. Rushpaw allowed his hindquarters to sink to the bottom and settled back, "You want to sit with me? We can just sit and talk if you want." The words were breathed out in an attempted reassurance.
His maw was square on her head, never pulling away. All that mattered was making sure that she was comfortable, that she was okay. There was only a brief pause before he was piping up to fill the silence again, "You could tell me about your favorite things, or things you like, it might make you feel better. If this is too much, that's okay too. We could always go hunting." Conflict was behind his eyes, genuine concern. He hoped she wouldn't blame him for making her feel this way; he wanted to help but wasn't sure this was right. Poppypaw would tell him, wouldn't she? Stuffing down the churning sensation, Rushpaw tried to ground himself in wait, and be a comforting presence no matter what she desired.

Poppypaw
Poppypaw tried to calm herself and focus on Rushpaw at her side, but the feeling of the water surrounding her was beginning to get to be too much. When Rushpaw sat down, Poppypaw felt dizzy. How could he sit down in the middle of the river—albeit as shallow as it was—and not feel like he was about to be swept away? The tiny current brushing through her fur felt like it was going to pry her from the mud beneath her paw pads and sweep her far downstream. She closed her eyes and took another deep breath. She began to shuffle again, going closer to the shore of the river on the other side. As she felt the water start to slowly go down as she inched up to the shore, she opened her eyes again. She looked to Rushpaw again and offers a shaky smile.
“Maybe sitting…on the shore,” she mewed quietly. “I do really appreciate you helping me with this, Rushpaw…I just…I think I’ll need more time.”
With her soaked body finally hauled up onto the shore, she all but collapsed onto the sand and grass. Poppypaw closed her eyes for a moment, breathing steadily and feeling the solidity of the ground beneath her body. She was probably being dramatic, but it felt good to get out of the river. It took another moment before she could take a deep breath and push herself up to sit proper and look at Rushpaw again. “I…I do think this helped,” she promised. In a horribly roundabout way, she truly did. It terrified her to do, but she had lasted longer in the water than she thought would ever be possible since her fall into the river. “Maybe we can do this again. I might even get over my fear at one point.” She looked down and rolled over a pebble under her paw. Maybe then she could be a true RiverClan cat.

Guilt prickled up in his chest. Regardless of his intent, the tom had made her uncomfortable. Deep down, Rushpaw knew that is wasn't his fault, and her reassurance help, but it did not drive away knowing that he had perhaps pushed her too far. He knew for next time at least. Although he could have lounged in the water forever, the tom quickly followed after her. He did not bother to shake out his pelt after climbing onto the shore. The apprentice sucked in the air and settled down rather close but without their coats touching like they had been a moment earlier. If she wanted to be close to him, he'd be there, but he feared overwhelming her once again.
"It's alright, Poppypaw. You tried and that's what matters. Another time, whenever you want, alright? But don't push yourself, it won't do any good. I'm sorry if I pushed you." His voice grew ever so softer with the apology before returning to its normal volume, "Hunting then. You lead the way, I'll follow."
