The sun's early morning rays were still weak, but for the first time since Owlpaw had been born, they were warm. The sunlight gleamed on the WindClan tom's pale coat as he followed his mother and sister out on to the moors, their paws on ground instead of snow. As they crested a hill, Owlpaw paused, staring over the wide, open expanse with critical eyes. The moors, where once a flat carpet of snow, was now patchy and slick with mud. Already, though, shoots of green were peeking through, and it made Owlpaw's heart leap with excitement - though he showed nothing but the normal cool, calm, and collected façade he typically bore.

"It will be all grass, soon," he said quietly. A shadow at the edge of his vision drew the young tom's attention away, and his eyes narrowed with disgust at the shape of one of their watchers. "But how are we supposed to get any hunting done with them around scaring everything off?"

Brackenpaw was glad to follow her mother and littermate out onto the moor, ears pricked as wide eyes stared around at the changing landscape. Snowmelt made the ground muddy, and the air was warmer than she'd ever known it to be. Owlpaw spoke, and she shrugged, "Do you think they'll ever leave?" She asked quietly. They were dead, she knew, hulking figures that stalked the edges of camp. They made her nervous, and she could see that Swiftspirit just barely restrained herself from clawing at one every time they neared her. For someone she'd never known to be harsh, who had never raised a paw against her kits or clanmates, it was disconcerting for Brackenpaw to watch her mother's reaction, even though she logically knew that she was a warrior just as capable as anyone else. She knew why mom was so hostile toward them, of course, and wished that the dark forest cats would just go away.

A gust of wind brought the scent of hare toward the Windclanners, and Brackenpaw turned toward it eagerly. She wasn't the fastest cat by any means, but she was fast enough that surprising the hare worked in her favor. It kicked out sharply, and Brackenpaw grimaced as she sank her fangs into the hare's throat, the kick catching her side. Triumphant, she turned toward Owlpaw with a grin, words somewhat muffled as she lifted the hare. "I caughth ith!"

"I dunno," Owlpaw said quietly, glancing again out of the corner of his eye at their ever-present companions. He knew that the Dark Forest cats only came into power shortly before they were born... but the fact still remained that Owlpaw never remembered a time when they weren't there. He'd heard stories, sure, but... he didn't really know what to think about it - they were weird, and smelled awful, and contributed next to nothing, but they'd never tried to hurt him or his siblings. Owlpaw frowned to himself, gaze flicking to his mother. Swiftspirit was quiet, but she didn't need to say anything, anyway... he knew how she felt, it was no secret... and he didn't blame her, either. The pale tom quickened his pace to butt his head gently against his mother's haunch, and then in an instant, there was action!

Brackenpaw turned away at the scent of a hare, and was on one in an instant. Owlpaw sprinted after a second that they'd spooked up, his powerful legs drawing him nearer and nearer with each stride... he wasn't as long-limbed and quick on his feet as a cat of true WindClan blood, but he could run forever, and had the advantage of surprise. Another heartbeat and the hare was within his grasp, Owlpaw adjusted his stride and leaped forward, cutting it off. As the hare tumbled into him, Owlpaw sank both sets of front claws into its pelt and yanked it off its feet, silencing its whines of distress with a well placed bite to the neck. He dragged it back towards Brackenpaw and Swiftspirit, grinning at his sister. "Got one too!" Not even winded, he plopped the creature next to hers and tilted his head, leaning back a bit to examine. "I think yours is bigger though."

"Hopefully." She muttered, casting a glance towards their mother, who was leading them through the territory.

Owlpaw darted off after another hare, and Brackenpaw watched. He might've been a bit faster than she was, though neither of them truly fit the stereotypical Windclan physique. "Nice catch." She mewed, though she did notice that Owlpaw might've been right... A competitive glimmer shone in her gaze, whiskers twitching.

"Well done, both of you." Swiftspirit purred. Brackenpaw felt her pelt warm under the praise, still grinning as she glanced from Owlpaw to their mother, then back to Owlpaw with a smirk. "Let's see which of us can catch the most!" She'd spotted another hare, and began to work her way toward it carefully. It wouldn't do to scare it off before she got close enough to have a chance at catching it, which undoubtedly made Brackenpaw's progress a little bit slower than most Windclanners, the stockier apprentice choosing to rely on her patience and the element of surprise rather than chasing hares flat out. It paid off as she leapt forward with paws outstretched, claws dragging the hare towards herself before it could run. She turned, burying the creature near the first catches she and Owlpaw had managed.

Wouldn't it be nice to have enough prey for all of them to carry something back to camp, rather than the abysmal catches most patrols had been doing before the weather had turned?

"Thanks," the compliment earned a grin from him, and the second one from his mother had the pale tom ducking his head almost bashfully. However, that didn't last long, as Brackenpaw proposed a competition and then sprinted off without another word. "Game on!" he called after her, giving Swiftspirit an affectionate flick of his tail as he dashed in the opposite direction. It didn't take long for him to spy a half-dozen or so pheasants, pecking at a bare spot in the ground. Immediately Owlpaw ducked into a crouch, creeping forward with his eyes locked on the fattest of the bunch. When he was close enough, he sprinted forward, snatching the bird before it even knew what was going on. The others took flight, but Owlpaw dispatched his prey expertly and sauntered back to store the catch near the others.

Beat that! he grinned, and wheeled away to search once more.

Owlpaw's antics earned an affectionate purr from Swiftspirit, lightly nudging his shoulder in return before he slipped away to hunt. Brackenpaw watched her brother as he caught another hare, a friendly, if competitive glint in her eye. It wasn't long before she caught the scent of another, and turned towards it eagerly. The hare spotted her, and Brackenpaw gave chase, though she wasn't quick enough before the hare darted into the safety of the tunnels. "Foxdung. They're so fast." She panted, turning back to her brother and mother ruefully.
