Uneasy Partners [Starlingflare]

Featherpaw. The name was certainly taking some time to get used to, and Atalante wasn't particularly thrilled to give up on her own name. Why did she need to be renamed, anyways? She had a perfectly good name. One that was fitting. One that didn't tie her to a life she hadn't been born into. She was in Thunderclan for a reason, of course, and while that meant playing the part of loyal apprentice, did that really mean she had to take on a new name, too?

As if that wasn't enough, she'd been given a mentor. Like she was some untrained kit who didn't know how to hunt or fight. Atalante might've been insulted, but she could understand it to a degree. Thunderclan's own warriors would know the ins and outs of their territory, and would know best how to fight within it. All things she would need to know as well while she was here. But did it have to be the one-eyed brute? It was bad enough that her first meeting with Starlingflare hadn't exactly been friendly, but now she was expected to train with him? It was a load of foxdung, really, but Atalante had simply smiled and continued on. She didn't have to like the warrior, she knew, and she was absolutely certain that he didn't like her. But she was here to train and learn. He couldn't have been that incompetent at least, even if the tom was sorely lacking in manners or empathy.

It took her a moment to pull herself from her thoughts as he called her new name, for a moment the unfamiliar address simply going in one ear and out the other. When she looked outside the overcrowded apprentice den (at least she wasn't completely alone with nobody to talk with) and saw Starlingflare's gray pelt, Atalante stood, shaking out the few scraps of moss clinging to her long fur and quickly padding over to him. For all that she wasn't thrilled about the situation, she was eager to finally get out of camp. She'd spent enough time cooped up in the medicine den, and even if she had to put up with Starlingflare's rudeness, at least she could start making herself out to be a useful member of Thunderclan at last.

"What are we doing today, Starlingflare?" Her tone betrayed genuine interest and excitement to be doing something other than sit around camp, at the very least.

The tom couldn't believe that Minnowfin had assigned him the rogue they encountered a couple moons ago. He didn't know if he was the only option as a mentor left, or if Minnowfin was playing a dirty trick on him since he was apart of the encounter. Either way he didn't exactly like it, but he would deal with it. As much as he didn't like her, considering their first encounter, the fact that she helped fend off a dog with Minkstar showed that she had somewhat proven herself. At least to earn a spot in the clan. Now he would see if she actually had the loyalty, and the willingness to serve Thunderclan.

The tom waited rather impatiently for his new apprentice, knowing she didn't exactly pay attention to her new name, but that was all he was going to call her so she needed to get used to it. Besides his tail tip thumping into the ground, he didn't really show any irritation. Even his voice seemed to be normal. "We are going hunting, or at least going to try. You need to get used to hunting in the undergrowth." He told her, standing from his spot. "Let's get going."

Atalante simply nodded at Starlingflare's response. Hunting made sense, and with the freezing cold having led to a miniscule fresh-kill pile, it was needed. "You don't need to teach me the basics, at least." She mewed with a wave of her fluffy tail. She was eager to follow him out of camp and into the territory. She hadn't been overly familiar with the territory before joining, someone that she needed to rectify.

First things first, though, hunting. Her ears pricked, and Atalante (they could call her Featherpaw all they wanted, but it would never be her real name) shifted into a crouch, scenting the chilly air for signs of prey. She was quick to pick up the scent of mouse despite the cold, and started toward it. A sudden growl made her whip towards the sound, and the mouse darted away. The dark face of a raccoon stared back at her, and hissing, Ata lunged toward it with unsheathed claws. The raccoon had interrupted her hunting and was a threat. Ata could use the practice anyways. She was out of shape after sitting in the medicine den for so long.

He nodded at her words, certainly somewhat appreciative of that. This way they would be able to find prey easier, and he didn't have to keep an eye on her other than... well in the case of a predator like now. It seemed no matter what he did, there would always be one. He would just have to make this quick. The dilute tom follow his apprentice's lead and leapt at the raccoon with claws outstretched.

Before the raccoon could get a swipe in, Starlingflare had jumped on it. Good thing, too. Neither cat had a scratch on them, and they still needed to at least find something to bring back to the fresh-kill pile. She gave her 'mentor' a grateful nod for the help, then quickly moved on. It wasn't long before Atalante spotted another mouse, and she dropped into a crouch, stalking towards the scrawny thing before leaping.

Only for another raccoon to make its way out of the undergrowth, scaring off the mouse. "Foxdung!" Ata hissed out in annoyance, slashing at the raccoon and quickly backing away before it could swipe at her. She was beginning to realize that so long spend in the medicine den really, really hadn't done her any favors. She hadn't been this tired from what she'd barely consider a scrap in moons!

"Stars what is with you and Raccoons?" The tom growled out. He wanted to get some hunting done but at this rate it didn't seem like they would. Featherpaw was still weak from the fight, as well as all the noise these creatures made.. There would be no prey in the area for a long time.

"We will kill this one too, and then go back to camp. Prey won't be found for a while." He growled out, preforming the same move on this one.
