Deerleap sat at the camp entrance, curling up in a ball to conserve her body warmth. Rookfire had agreed to teach her basic herbs, and let her find some for herself. despite the cold, she couldn't help but grin. now, if anything ever happened, she would be ready. she glanced up quickly as she heard the sound of muffled pawsteps, though she couldn't see who the figure was through the black night and falling snow, and her nose seemed to have frozen off.

When Deerleap asked if Rookfire could teach her basic herbs, the black tuxedo accepted without a second thought. He felt that every cat needed to know basic herbs, just in case their clanmates got hurt and there was no medicine cat nearby. "Hey, Deerleap!" he said, grinning at his clanmate. She looked cold tonight, so the former medicine cat thought that it would be good to move their legs to gather herbs. "I guess you've waited long enough. Let's go and gather some herbs!"

As the two cats left camp, Rookfire decided to start with some small talk. "So, how does it feel to be a warrior?" he asked. "Any different from when you were an apprentice?" The black tuxedo didn't feel that different from when he became a medicine cat from a medicine cat apprentice, but it probably had something to do with the specific duties of a medicine cat, as well as the time when he got his full name. Being a ShadowClan apprentice was completely different than being ShadowClan's medicine cat, but Rookfire liked it, in a way. As ShadowClan's medicine cat, he was focused on just helping the clan get through the simple things. Right now, ShadowClan needed paws to hunt and fight with, so Rookfire was just helping wherever he could, whether that was gathering herbs or catching prey.

Deerleap was more glad than anything to get onto her paws. trudging through the snow, she thoughtfully replied to Rookfire's question. "Well, it's nothing really. other than that freezing vigil, my life has been the same. just hope with all the new kits in camp, I could mentor one of them, though I'll probably be too young."

"You never know, Deerleap," Rookfire said, winking at the she-cat. "You might get an apprentice before you even know it." The black tuxedo led her to one of his favorite places to gather herbs, the Deep Marshes. Of course, the fact that it was mostly frozen over didn't make it as appealing to gather herbs in. Still, he thought that they could find something here. "So, Deerleap, do you think you'd be a good mentor if you were given an apprentice?" the black tuxedo asked, searching the snow for any sprigs of green leaves. Frustratingly, there was nothing that he could find anywhere. "Also, do you see any herbs around anywhere? I can't find a thing."

the Deep Marshes was not one of her favorite places to be. the mud stuck to her, half-frozen and slimy. she wasn't about to complain, though. she asked for this. If Rookfire said it was the best place to get herbs, than so be it. hissing, she dragged her paws forward as she tasted the air for some sort of plant.

she gingerly ducked under some brambles, ignoring the sucking noise every time she shifted her weight in the mud. she noticed several plants under the thicket, protected by the frost of the season. her eyes widened. this was a lucky find! a small plant with broad leaves caught her eye. what was it called? Deerleap leaned forward and nipped away the stalks carefully and laid them down beside her. behind the plant was more stalks of another plant. she purred with excitement as she took them between her teeth. this one had round, yellow leaves. ( first is Comfrey, second is Tansy )

"Hey, what are these?" she called out to Rookfire. she lifted the precious few stalks and bounded over to the tom, careful not to spill any of the juice.

Rookfire turned to look at what Deerleap had found, grinning at the sight. "You found tansy? In this weather? That's crazy. StarClan must be watching out for us or something." Looking closer at what Deerleap found, he noticed another herb. "And comfrey? How did you find them both? Honestly, with these conditions, I'd consider that a successful trip already. But I guess we can search for a little while longer." Rookfire turned to talk to Deerleap while the two were searching for herbs. "By the way, Deerleap, for emergency situations cobwebs and a herb that prevents infection would be good. Like-"

Horsetail. In a section of the marsh that wasn't completely frozen over, there were stalks of horsetail. They looked pretty normal too - maybe they were a bit paler? Or maybe they always looked like that, and Rookfire was misremembering. "Like this!" the black tuxedo finished, grabbing some horsetail and bringing it to Deerleap. "Horsetail's one of the herbs that, when chewed into a poultice, can prevent infection in a wound." The black tuxedo made sure to not drop the horsetail onto the frozen ground. "It seems like a good time to go back, before it gets a bit too cold. You want to go back or should we gather some more herbs?"

Deerleap nodded to Rookfire's words. it was always useful to know which herbs can help heal wounds quickly, in case a medicine cat was not close by. "We can continue," she replied, already turning around to see if there was any leaves poking out through the marsh. she noticed something among the brown murky ground and padded towards it.

it was a shrub of some kind. she sniffed it carefully and plucked out the delicate plants while careful not to damage the herbs already in her jaws. she gave a questioning look, not wanting to open her mouth and destroy the plants in her jaws. (Ragwort)
