Silent Hunting (open)

The days of staying in camp were over, and Swanmist actually had the energy to hunt. She still felt distrust from every warrior that looked her way, but they treated her kits different. She didn't like being away from her kits, but they were apprentices, and had things to do. She might as well make herself useful, maybe by hunting the other cats would like her more, maybe.

White paws matching the snow, she had actually attempted to groom herself. Swanmist looked definitely better than when she first came for help, so maybe, just maybe, she could make this work. Snow blanketed the forest, her new home. But, sometimes, it didn't really feel that way, it didn't feel like she belonged anywhere. She was better than in Riverclan, but maybe if the cats stopped staring at her and calling her mean things, she could actually live here without feeling out of place.

Well, if her kits were happy, Swanmist didn't feel like she could care about how happy she was.

She paused. Whiskers twitching as she heard a rustle. Her tail lifted instinctively as she tracked the sound. A mouse? She sniffed the air, the smell of sickness that clung to her fur had somewhat faded and she could smell a bit of mouse. She moved closer, she could see the little brown shape scurrying towards some seeds, the rodent was quick and thin. But any prey would do. She dropped into a crouch, creeping towards it, and leaping. She had it's tail under her paw for a second, but it got free almost instantly, she chased it, but it scurried away, into a bush, and the scent was already fading. She hissed to herself.

Maybe she was useless in Thunderclan after all?

Reedpaw was hunting through the forest by himself when he heard hissing in front of him. The calico Tom poked his head through some ferns and noticed a familiar white pelt. They had met when he was a kit, but Appledapple had interfered, telling him Swanmist was dangerous. Now that he was a bit older, he could see for himself that his mother was exaggerating. This poorly groomed white cat who couldn’t catch a mouse? He smiled at Swanmist and said softly, “that was close. Do you want me to teach you how to hunt mice?” He hoped she would agree. He wanted to know her better.

Swanmist turned her head towards some more rustling, but even a kit would've been able to tell it was too big to be prey, so she stepped back a little, ears falling back as she stared into the ferns. To her surprise, not only was it just an apprentice, it was a cat she had seen before. That one's mother had dragged him away... Her ears flicked back up (they weren't really comfortable being down, they were way too big for that), but her eyes stayed narrowed as the tom asked her a question.

I know how to hunt mice! It's just my first time hunting in awhile and in a new territory. Her tail flicked, looking away and shaking her head, starting to move elsewhere. Was that too mean? She hesitated looking back. Swanmist raised her tail, flicking it towards her. Hunt with me?

She waited, but not for long, and started heading off into a different part of the undergrowth, she halted when her big ears caught a noise. Not rustling, more like scratching against wood. Would that be.. a squirrel? She wondered, gaze drifting across the different trees. Then she saw it, a reddish brown critter. Licking her jaws, determined to catch at least something for her new clan, she crouched down, slowly going closer to the trunk. She leaped, claws digging into wood and jaws clamped around the squirrel's body, she felt warm, blood drip into her mouth as she slid down the tree, the squirrel struggled but she wasn't about to let it go. Giving it one rough shake, the squirrel went limp, and she started digging into the ground to bury it. See, I can hunt! I'm not completely useless!

Reedpaw realised he had offended the she-cat when she flicked her tail and stalked off. “No, wait! I didn’t mean it like that!” He began but Swanmist flicked her tail again. She forgave him? No, she wanted him to hunt with her. Excited, he bounded up the meet her. He watched her kill off a squirrel. “Well done!” He cheered.

A rustling noice sounded from beside him. Reedpaw crouched and slid across the frozen ground to see what creature had caused the noice. A small sparrow was perched on a Low branch. Wriggling his hindquarters, Reedpaw prepared to pounce. He leaped but a trail of brambles snagged his fur and pulled him down. The sparrow fluttered off in alarm. Reedpaw hissed with embarrassment and anger. His fur just had to keep disrupting all his hunts, didn’t it?

Swanmist stared at Reedpaw as he cheered. Is every Thunderclan apprentice so loud? She flicked her ears back for a second, before hearing a noise, rustling. She might've investigated it, but the apprentice was already going. She moved quietly behind the apprentice to watch him. He's very excited... Swanmist was quite good at reading body language, but it was a skill you needed to be able to communicate without talking. Luckily, her pure white fur blended in with the snow, and she knew she wouldn't be seen if she didn't move much, she just focused on watching Reedpaw's technique.

She had noticed a bit of bramble near him, sure to catch his fur if he didn't leap right, but it didn't seem like Reedpaw noticed. Too focused on the bird. She thought, but wasn't sure how to tell him that. In Riverclan territory, they had to learn to be cautious of their surroundings, especially when catching... Fish... But it certainly helped to apply that onto other prey. Suddenly, Reedpaw leaped, but his fur got caught on the bramble, like she predicted. She had to lift a paw to her nose to stop herself from giggling. This was the cat that wanted to teach me how to hunt a mouse? She watched the bird fly, but it didn't go far, landing on another branch. Maybe she could try?

Swanmist looked back at Reedpaw. Did she really want to help him free? Keeping the bird in her sight, she unhooked his fur off of the tangling bramble, once she made sure that all fur strands were unhooked, she stalked off into the undergrowth, to get closer to that singing sparrow. It didn't seem to see her, yet. She placed her paw on the tree, sinking her claws into the bark. Maybe she could climb up? Slowly, she lifted herself onto the tree, eyes on the sparrow. Once she was close enough, she pushed herself off and up, at the sparrow. It's wings lifted and it started making terrified cheeping noises, but she sank her claws in deeper until it stopped, ears flicked away from the horrible sound. She grabbed the sparrow up into her jaws and looked down from the tree.

How am I going to get down? She looked at the tree again, perhaps she could slide down? She looked at her soft pink pads. I could get some bark in my paw... But I have to show I'm worth keeping in Thunderclan. Gripping her bird tighter, she launched onto the trunk, pulling back her claws slightly to allow her to slide down, but stay gripped. Halfway down, she already felt some tree bark slide off and stick into her paw, she winced, but it wasn't long until she felt her back paws touch snow. She dropped the bird beside her and stared at her paw. Hmm.

Reedpaw felt slightly embarrassed as he missed the catch and even more so when Sawnmist caught it. however, he quickly got over it and gave the white queen and friendly flick over the ears. "That was an awesome catch! do you want to learn to climb trees? mostly skyclan cats do it but I taught myself! it's useful for catching birds and squirrels, and landing on prey when there is almost no undergrowth to hide you!" He suggested, though his eyes were somewhere else entirely. a crow was perched on the branches of an oak tree, and the calico tom was already beginning to crouch.

slowly, Reedpaw circled around until he was no longer in sight of the crow. he gripped his claws into the frozen bark of the oak and heaved himself onto a low branch. he carefully hopped to a higher branch, and then another, putting a forepaw out first to check the strength of the branch. when he was on a branch slightly higher than the crow's, he leaped.

The apprentice's paws caught onto sleek feathers as the two plummeted to the ground. before they crashed, Reedpaw killed the bird and used it to cushion his fall. a grin spread across his face, his blue eyes glimmering. "See? Easy for catching birds!" He purred.
