Leaf-bare’s grasp (c)

Pale paws padded lightly through the drifts. If she stood just right, she could just balance on top of the drifts without her paws breaking through too much. It was cold, though- too cold to experiment- almost too cold to think! An almost amused purr briefly rumbled from the golden she-cat’s chest before turning to gaze quizzically at her hunting companion.

“This looks like as nice a spot as any to hunt. What do you think?” Dawnfeather asked, looking up at the trees. The trees- icicles clinging to their branches, snow weighing them down til every bough groaned beneath the weight. She felt for the trees. It was too dangerous to be up in any but the lowest limbs. Not even Dawnfeather would chance anything but the briefest trip through the trees.

A gust of wind penetrated straight through her pelt, and she shivered. Drifts of snow, high enough to touch her stomach. Which was uncomfortably empty. No one was close to starving- but that last time she’d been truly full must’ve been the last time the Twolegs fed her.

And if this was how SkyClan was faring, how about the others? The other Clans with less territory, possibly more mouths to feed?

That was not their concern, at the moment. They were feeding their own.

Dandelionflight struggled to keep herself from falling through the snow drifts as Dawnfeather and her looked for a place to hunt. She was happy to be able to hunt with her friend, and she looked around. The forest looked empty compared to the moons before in leaf-fall. "I think it looks fine," she meowed in response. She scanned the nearby area and saw a bird pecking at the bottom of a tree. She carefully stalked forward and tried to make as little noise as possible. She slowly got closer, but one of her paws fell through the snow and alerted it. It let out a loud squawk and flew away. She was disappointed that she had failed, but there would hopefully be more to find.

She watched the bird fly off, a loud squawk betraying her friend’s failure. That was alright. The snow muffled sound. And, luck of luck, there was another bird, seemingly oblivious to the grisly fate its friend had barely escaped. Dropping to a crouch, she snuck closer… and closer…

The time as a kittypet had not dulled her reflexes. With perfect form, she raced through the air, claws ending the quail’s life instantly. It did not have a chance to make a sound- a peaceful death, almost. Bird hanging from her jaws, she turned to see how Dandelionflight was faring.

Dandelion turned to see Dawnfeather with a successful catch and gave her a smile. She trudged away through the snow and spotted a squirrel running down a tree. She stalked around the tree and tried to get close enough without alerting it. She saw it sitting with its back turned to her, and she dropped into a crouch. Dandelion pounced and landed on it and swiftly dealt a blow to its neck. She picked up its limp body and headed back towards where Dawnfeather was.

Dawnfeather gave her friend a smile. The squirrel and quail were not, perhaps, fat prey, but they were prey, and that was well. More hunting would be needed- maybe they should stash their prey in a tree-

The fur on the back of her neck stood on end.

She opened her mouth, scented the air, and something trembled on the edge of scent. Something bad. Something that reeked of fights and blood.

Ginger fur was all she had time to process as something exploded out at her- fox fox fox “Fox!”

Pure instinct made her leap into the air, jaws snapping at where she’d been mere moments before. She landed on the fox’s back, claws digging into the animal’s back, before she slipped off, falling into the snow and scampering away.

“Dandelionflight! Fox! Pin, stun, something!” She cried out as the fox turned keen yellow eyes fixing onto her own.

Fox used Iron Bite, dealing 17 damage and costing 30 stamina. Dawnfeather used Dodge and Fight, dealing 0 damage and costing 7 stamina.

Once she saw that her friend was fine, Dandelionflight turned to bury her catch. She scraped away some snow and dropped her prey in the hole. She could only half cover the squirrel before Dawnfeather started to yowl about a fox. Dandelion immediately turned around to see a fox snarling at her friend. She bounded forward and leaped at the fox's back. She sunk her claws through its fur and tried her best to hold it down.

Dandelionflight used Leap and Hold, dealing 8 damage and costing 15 SP! Fox is pinned for 2 turns! Climber's Grasp grants +1 chance to pin!

“Oh, thank you!” Dawnfeather gasped as the fox, snarling, was pinned by her friend’s capable claws. A risky maneuver popped into her head- this was the best time to try- Dawnfeather surged forwards, claws shining in the dim sunlight.

Unfortunately, she’d perhaps underestimated the fox. After all, Dandelionflight was a younger, newer warrior than herself, and it should’ve been no surprise when the beast managed to headbutt Dawnfeather roughly.

“Keep it pinned!” She mewed, shaking her head to rid herself of the ringing in her ears.

Dawnfeather attempted to use Belly Rake, costing 25 stamina and dealing no damage. Fox is pinned.

Dandelionflight felt the fox thrashing under her, and she watched Dawnfeather as she tried to attack the fox. It managed to knock her away and Dawnfeather fell back. While it was focused on her friend, Dandelionflight raked her claws down its back. She quickly hooked her front claws in again. "I'll try!" She yowled back to her friend over the fox's snarls. Luckily, it seemed to still be struggling to get her off.

Dandelionflight continued Leap and Hold, dealing 8 damage and costing 15 SP! Fox is pinned for 1 more turn!

“Oh, but be careful!” She called, springing to her paws and charging back in. No- she wouldn’t try anything risky this time- her jaws connected with the fox’s throat, but only for a moment, afraid of its powerful jaws. She could feel something give way beneath her teeth- but not the something she needed.

She backed up, eyes wide as the fox began to thrash. Maybe Dandelionflight could get in one more attack- but then they’d have to tag-team it, distract it.

Dawnfeather used Snap, dealing 10 damage and costing 7 stamina. Fox is no longer pinned!
