Subject: Antagonistic Learning [Mountainpaw] Tue 28 Dec 2021 - 5:52
The air was frigid, snow coming up to Beechfang's chest as she led Mountainpaw out of camp. The sky had cleared, and that would have to do. It went without saying that mentor and apprentice were clearly at-odds with one another, but the clan needed to be fed. No, hunting couldn't wait, and the sooner Mountainpaw knew what he was doing, the better. She'd been training him hard, purposely staying out of camp as long as she could having him to both hunt and fight, and from the lack of complaints from others, it seemed to be working to keep him out of trouble. How long that would last, Beechfang didn't know. Hopefully until he was no longer her problem. It had been nearly a week since his apprentice ceremony, time enough for Mountainpaw to know the basics.
With a low huff, the one-eyed warrior turned to Mountainpaw, glare as cold as the air around them. "Well?" she asked, "What prey can you scent?" This wasn't his first hunt, he should know the routine by now.
The ground was frozen solid and the wind blew strong, it was unpleasant to be out at all, but Mountainpaw did not mind, he liked the hurt. At least Beechfang also had to suffer through this weather so that was a win.
Mountainpaw rolled his eyes Well If I could smell anything than your old fleabag half rotten face maybe I could...Beechfa he added his given nickname to her at the end to push her buttons.
When he was a kit he called Beechfang Beechfa, this is because her old name Beechface sounded ironic to him and he dropped half the suffix to make it match her current face... resulting in Beechfa.
his mentor and him were indeed at odds and he didn't mind reminding her of this at any opportunity he had, but hey, she was a spotted and he was a solid it was meant to be this way as far as he was concerned his entire kit life he was raised to hate the spotted cats in his clan... which now that he thought about it was pretty much everyone. As a kit his mother always told him that spotteds did not work as hard and were lazy and undeserving of skyclan... however after seeing the amount of training Beechang had been giving him he wasn't so sure that was entirely true, maybe just mostly true.
Training had been tough she had been taking him out constantly, but he liked that, it meant he was learning things. He would never tell that to her though. He liked being absolutely dead tired at the end of every day it was painful and he was beginning to learn he liked taking pain almost as much as he liked giving it.
He smelled the air but frowned... the forest was dead he could smell nothing. His nose burned from the cold, it was brutal out here this was the hardest leaf bear anyone had seen in a long time.
A strong breeze picked up and he could pick up a faint scent of squirrel on it, looking upwind he spotted the creature Thank starclan he whispered.
He flicked his tail to signal his mentor this was his.
He stalked closer and closer until he was within striking distance.
OOC: Rolling for squirrel success is dice roll 1-3. Predator summon 8-10
Just as he was going to strike another squirrel up in a tree sounded an alarm...Great... Just his luck there's finally a squirrel no 2 squirrels and one of them is looking out for predators such as himself.
he leapt forward still hoping to catch the one on the ground. His claws mere inches away as it scampered up the tree. ughh he spat in frustration. The squirrel now high above was chirping loudly as if it were taunting him, haha didn't catch me you dumb slow cat...
ugh this was humiliating and worse the whole area would be alerted to their presence thanks to the squirrels making a racket.
He glared at his mentor Maybe if we had gone to Moonlit Creek we would have had better luck but noooo you wanted to come out here he spat disrespectfully as usual. He was more so just embarrassed he had missed such an opportunity, but hey it was her idea to come out here and not the better grounds of Moonlit Creek.
He rolled his eyes again frustrated. Hey at least i saw it and went for it he said on the defensively. It was unlike him to get defensive especially before someone even said anything but he truly was embarrassed he had missed such a catch... it was right in front of him and now his clan would have less food ughh what a fail he thought bitterly at himself.
Energy/sp used -7 ( -2 harsh season) for total -9 Mountainpaw: 20/20 hp 51 / 60 sp.

((OOC: Harsh season is -7 sp in leafbare, not -9. ^^ To reduce the risk of a predator before you catch something I'll abstain from rolling... Unless you'd rather they spar?))
Beechfang let out a soft growl of annoyance as Mountainpaw fired back with some tired, same old comment about her appearance. He was nothing but a spoiled kit with no manners or respect, and she refused to acknowledge the worn out foxdung.
Mountainpaw came up empty, and Beechfang's only response was an unimpressed stare before the former medicine cat turned away in search of her own prey. He needed to learn to hunt in less than ideal circumstances, and this was doing exactly that. Trying to explain things to him would get her nowhere, so she wouldn't waste her breath on trying.
Beechfang moved on, and it took a bit before she finally caught the scent of squirrel on the breeze. It might have even been the same squirrel that Mountainpaw had failed to catch. With a shake of her head, Beechfang stalked forward, pale fur doing a better job at blending into the snow than Mountainpaw's solid coat.
When she thought she was close enough, Beechfang sprang forward. Her landing was awkward and clumsy, both from the snowfall and a slight misjudge of distance, but her jaws had found the squirrel's tail, and she slammed a heavy paw down, keeping the creature pinned as her fangs flashed towards a scrawny throat.
OOC: I think a predator would be cool so roll away, Ah yes it looks like I misread the hunting rules it is indeed only -7 for some reason I thought leaf bear was -7 and harsh was an additional -2.
Mountainpaw tried his best to look unimpressed as Beechfang caught the squirrel Lucky... just be careful the squirrel dose not scratch out your other eye... what would you do then... I would have to lead you back to camp... he offered trying not to give anything further.
But id probably lead you into the river he thought bitterly
He was slightly disappointed that Beechfang had not given a big reaction to all his talk... just have to try later maybe.
He spotted a bird a short distance away it had been singing a little song and given itself away... Mountainpaw hoped to make that the last mistake the bird would ever make.
He stayed low to the ground and stalked towards the bird.
OOC attempt to catch bird in harsh conditions 1-3 will result in a catch 8-10 results in predator ambush
Mountainpaw leaped and hit the bird hard square on with his front paws killing it on impact. He purred happily holding it in his jaws he glanced at Beechfang as if to say yeahh I can catch stuff too half-face
he padded back over to his mentor and put his catch with hers, We aren't doing so bad after all this was as close to a compliment he would give to Beechfang.
Energy used -7
Mountainpaw: 20/20 hp 46/60 sp (fixed the sp from earlier post) 60-14 = 46

Beechfang bit back a snarl at Mountainpaw's word, claws digging furrows into the snow as not for the first time she considered taking a swipe at the mouthy brat. Her kill might have been luck, and she wouldn't allow it to just be 'luck' if she could help it. If this idiot apprentice could mock her, Beechfang needed to do better.
He'd managed to catch a bird this time, and Beechfang didn't bother to praise him. The last thing anyone needed was for this oversized kit to have an inflated ego.
She turned away, only to whip around at the flutter of wings. Large wings. The eagle had dived for Mountainpaw before she could so much as step towards him, sharp talons aiming for bloodshed.
Looked like Mountainpaw would be getting a lesson in combat today after all. The thought of leaving him to it was a tempting one... But he was Skyclan, and Skyclan protected their own. Without a word, Beechfang lunged forward, clawing viciously at the bird and coming away with blood staining her fur. Prey had been scarce and increasingly hard to find as leafbare set in, they could bring the eagle back and add it to the fresh-kill pile.
Eagle used Swoop on Mountainpaw for -15 sp, dealing -9 damage. Beechfang used Jumping Strike for -7 sp, dealing -8+3 damage.
Mountainpaw was caught completly off gaurd. He was smacked hard into the hard frozen ground sharp talons tearing into his pelt cutting him deep, blood began oozing out of his fresh wound staining his grey fur with red.
He hissed in pain looking around rapidly had his mentor finally snaped at his words? Did she just attack him? he was in a confused state.
finally he saw the eagle and hissed viciously at it.
Leave it to me! I can take it alone! he growled. Finally he could show his mentor what he was capable of.
Let me take it stand down! he barked orders as he attacked.
Mountainpaw wanted to do a daring move, he wanted to end this eagle for thinking it could attack him.
Without hesitation and with little common sense (as was usual for him) he went straight for the belly of the beast opening himself up to an easy counter attack if it failed. But hey, that was what Mountainpaw was all about, risk it all or nothing. It was time to kill or be killed.
Mountainpaw attempts Belly Rake!
OOC Rolling die now... pls tell me if I did this right as I never used this before but it fits his personality of a daredevil
The eagle was caught off guard this time as Mountainpaw slid perfectly into a prime position to dish out some heavy damage. He clawed furiously upward claws inflicting alot of damage on the big bird. At the same time it took alot of energy... but it was so worth it seeing the amount of damage and pain he could cause. Mountainpaw grinned like a maniac he was enjoying this.
Beechfang 35 / 35 hp 63 / 70 sp
Eagle 19 / 40 hp (29 - 10) 110 / 125 sp
Mountainpaw 11 / 20 hp 21 / 60 sp (46-25)

Mountainpaw... Thought he could shout orders? At his mentor? Beechfang could only imagine what Wolfstar or Bloodstar would've done if she had tried that as an apprentice. Laugh in her face probably... And maybe Bloodstar would've let her learn why being an arrogant, showboating fleaball was a bad idea the hard way. If that's how Mountainpaw wanted it, why should she object? Maybe getting his tail handed to him would knock some sense into him. She'd step in before he was too injured, of course. There was no need to stress the medicine cat.
Almost lazily, like a cat toying with food (which may as well have been what she was doing) Beechfang swiped at the eagle again... Not really putting much effort into the blow. Mountainpaw had gone for the belly and succeeded, he'd be just fine with minimal help, clearly.
Eagle used Swoop for -15 sp, dealing -9 damage. Beechfang used Front Paw Blow for -5 sp, dealing -6 damage.
Mountainpaw could tell this was gonna be a hard fight.
The eagle hit him again HARD it hurt really bad. He grimiced as the talons drew open new wounds blood was soaking his pelt now. He had to finish this quick he was sure he would be dead soon if he took another hit like that. He panted hard trying to focus. He could feel his pelt soaked in blood and the pain was sharp.
But he was crazy, he enjoyed the pain it made him focus, made him angrier. He lashed out anger full force in a barage of flailing blow he clawed at his opponent.
He then went limp under the eagle playing dead, at the perfect time he snapped upwards biting into the eagles soft underbelly.
Mountainpaw used desperate blows Mountainpaw used playing dead
he could tell the eagle was in alot of pain... but on the flip side so was he... his vision was a little foggy as he felt dizzy he had used alot of energy in this fight and with the hunting earlier and he was bleeding heavily. He desperatly hoped the eagle would die already but he could tell the eagle still had some life to it.
Foxdung he cursed maybe he was in over his head... but even if he was he would never admit it... Im fine I can still take it he meowed at Beechfang, his voice was way less confident now as he breathed heavily. He could tell his mentor was not going all in, that was fine with him he wanted a challenge, if she didnt wanna help at all that would also be fine by his standards. He could still win this.... right?? He hissed angerly at the eagle hoping to scare it off.
Beechfang 35 / 35 hp 58 / 70 sp
Eagle 1 / 40 hp (13 - 12) 95 / 125 sp
Mountainpaw 2 / 20 hp 9 / 60 sp (21-12)

The eagle let out an angry shriek, talons lashing out at Mountainpaw a final time. And the apprentice almost looked like he was enjoying it. Beechfang enjoyed combat too, but Mountainpaw was something else. Something Beechfang didn't like.
Before the eagle could strike at the apprentice again, Beechfang stepped forward. Fangs sank into the eagle's neck, the blood that flowed over her tongue shockingly warm against the icy air. The bird went still, and Beechfang glared down at the apprentice.
"Up with you, we're going back to camp." She said terse as ever. "Take your bird." She added, turning to retrieve her squirrel from earlier. She'd carry the eagle as well, the bird was large and would be unwieldy for an apprentice to drag through the snow. If Mountainpaw thought he was so tough he could walk back to camp just fine. His wounds, from a quick glance, looked worse than they were, but the bleeding would slow quickly and he'd heal fine, scars or not.
Eagle used Talon Strike for -10 sp, dealing -7 damage. Beechfang used Snap for -7 sp, dealing -8 damage.
Beechfang 35 / 35 hp 51 / 70 sp (58 - 7)
Eagle Dead 0 / 40 hp (1 - 8) 85 / 125 sp (95 - 10)
Mountainpaw got hit hard again by the giant bird. He fell on his side knocked to the hard frozen ground. Blood staining the snow around him and his grey fur was now covered with the red stains as well.
This was it he was gonna die here he watched the eagle making a final attack at him he winced expecting it... his mentor snapped the bird before it could hit him again. He stared shocked ...
He winced at his cuts, oouuuchh he thought.
He was sure he would be eagle breakfast if Beechfang had not stepped in. He glanced at her quickly but could not meet her eye so he looked at his front paws instead.
He breathed heavily his body ached and pain was all over him. He saw stars in his vision as he tried to sit up. He slowly got up and picked up his bird.
He did his best to keep his head high but he knew he just had his tail handed to him. See? I told you I had that Beechfa he muttered still trying to appear like he had everything under control.
His wounds stung and he felt like garbage, but in a weird sense he kinda enjoyed it the pain was reliving in a strange sense.
Back to camp so soon? Dont wanna get some more food? leave it to a spotted to quit early he meowed quietly.
He was actually very relived they were headed home. He was exhausted and all this talk was ... well just that just talk. He felt like he might collapse at any second.
He followed closely behind his mentor for once, if anything else attacked them he kinda knew he would need her close by... he was dumb but not THAT dumb.
They padded along in silence for some time, the small conscious that Mountainpaw had was eating away at him...
She just saved your life mousebrain...
Ermm Beechfang he used her correct name for once
T-Thanks for saving my pelt
he said in almost a whisper... That was the hardest thing he had ever had to say.
He would say no more about the topic, Beechfa would have to do with that.
