To the Sky (open hunting/battle patrol)

Dawnfeather picked her way through the trees, glad to be on a patrol, away from camp. The golden molly bounded through the trees above the rest of the patrol, keen eyes picking out weak branches and hollow limbs. The trees were stained beautiful colors, the early morning light accenting the warm shades. Even for a dawn patrol, this was a beautiful one, for anyone who appreciated the dappled light on the leaves. The cool air laid heavy over the ground, penetrating easily through short pelts.

All in all, a good morning to be out and about. The smow hadn’t quite yet come, but Dawnfeather was ready to see it, see the whiteness that covered the forest in a warm embrace.

A flutter of wings caught her attention, and she sprang, eyes locked on the doves. As she leapt through the air, her claws caught one’s wing, sending it spiraling down into the middle of the patrol- they’d take care of it. Her jaws clamped onto the back of the other’s neck, killing it instantly. She dropped down lightly onto the branch she’d been aiming for, dove in her mouth. “Good hunting today!” she called out through the dove’s soft feathers. A good omen.

Dawnfeather attempted to catch two doves. Catches were both successful and cost 6 stamina.

Oliverain kept her eyes trained above, trying to spot Dawnfeather through the gold and crimson. She wanted to be up there with her, but branches often couldn't carry her weight. Maybe she would've learned how to get past that obstacle if she had focused more on climbing as an apprentice. Whatever, she had trained herself to hunt things on the ground, not the trees.

A blur of red and white crashed down through the branches, falling into a pile of twigs and leaves. She brushed the debris off carefully. "Good hunting yes, but that's mostly because you're extremely skilled," she called back to her friend. Making a hole she placed the dove in before covering it gently. The ragdoll arranged the leaves back onto the buried prey.

Her eyes caught two mice scurrying behind a tree, she kicked up the leaves as she reached her paws out to grab them. Something crashed into her head, causing the ragdoll to tumble over. Once Oliverain's brain stopped spinning she locked eyes with an owl, both of their faces saying what are you doing here? That's my prey! She hissed at the owl, spiking her fur and arching her back. The owl did the same, except with feathers and wings of course. The warrior leapt at the bird, sinking her claws into it's wings and pinning it down. She made sure to hold the bird face down, as to make it harder for it's beak to snag her.

Oliverain attempted to catch two mice, costing 3 stamina. She summoned an Owl instead. So much for that good omen.

Oliverain used Leap-and-Hold on The Owl dealing 8 damage and costing 15 stamina.
The Owl is pinned for one turn.

Dawnfeather purred softly at her friend’s comment, opening her maw to reply in kind, but Olive was already stalking a few mice, and she didn’t want to mess up her friend’s hunt. However, it seemed something else was dead-set on intruding.

Suddenly, Dawnfeather jolted into motion, leaping from her branch, ricocheting off a tree trunk, and slamming straight into the owl from an unexpected direction, sinking her claws and fangs into its down. With a hiss she pulled away, leaving red welling among the feathers. Olive couldn’t keep it down for much longer, but she’d be ready. Licking blood from her muzzle, she called out to her friend. “It might have had enough.” It certainly looked rather worse for wear, while both cats were unharmed.

Dawnfeather used Leaping Bound, dealing 10 damage (7+3 due to being caught unawares) and costing 7 stamina.

Oliverain kept pressing the owl down as Dawnfeather joined the fight. The bird kept squirming and squawking in protest. Well maybe you shouldn't have gone for my prey then? She looked to Dawnfeather, agreeing with her words. Oliverain gave one last nip at the owl before backing off with a huff. Why did it have to struggle so much? she complained as she regained her energy. The owl screeched, starting to take off but not before it threw it's talon at the ragdoll, slicing her arm. "Starclan's w-" She bit her tongue, kneeling down to the grass and foliage. Her eyes became wet while blood flowed onto the leaves and feathers, staining them red. Quiet hisses turned into whimpers, but nothing more came from the warrior.

The Owl is no longer pinned! The Owl used Talon Strike on Oliverain, dealing 7 damage and costing 10 stamina.

Dawnfeather was thrown off as the owl bucked beneath her, landing heavily on ther back, stunned for a moment. The owl was flying off… they’d won… but Olive was crouched on the ground… Olive… was she… alright…

Thoughts scrambled… like shattered eggshells… she pulled herself to her paws… and over to her friend… swaying on her paws… eyes fogged… like mist… that refused… to… go…

She shook her head violently, coming back to herself with a keening whimper, crouching next to the other molly, pressing against her side. “Olive…” she whispered, licking gently at some of the blow, seeking to staunch the flow. “Olive… are you alright?” She eyed some moss… growing not far off. She could try to substitute that for cobwebs… but hopefully Olive was okay, right?

Right?

"Yes," she said instinctively, "Yep I'll be fine, sorry. It hurts." The initial searing pain was fading out, and after a while Oliverain was able to uncurl. Sitting up she not so carefully licked the cut, but it stung when she did so. "Just give me a bit." She wasn't patient with the wound, she wanted to get back to hunting. The slash was deep but.. she wouldn't let it stop her. It was just a scratch, right? Oliverain frowned at the long red line running down her arm. It was more than a scratch. Bird-brained birds, why are they so... bird-brained. The ragdoll kept licking around the cut, trying to clean off the still flowing blood, wincing every so often when she touched the wound. She ignored the ache to go see a medicine cat, she didn't want this to be a big deal.

“Oh, good!” Dawnfeather sighed in relief. “That doesn’t look too bad, you scared me there, Olive!” She pressed herself into her friend’s side for a moment before standing and shaking out her fur. “I don’t know if you should be hunting on that… if you get it in the dirt Muddy will have a fit.”

She flicked her tail, studying the wound. She’d hunted on worse… but she really didn’t want Olive to get hurt.

Oliverain laughed and nodded in response, though wasn't intent on following Dawn's advice. "Yeah I bet he would." She sat up, putting as little weight on her arm as she could. "Well then, I just won't get it dirty yeah?" Looking around eagerly, she caught the smell of shrew before she could see it. It was a plump one searching around at the roots of a tree. She crawled forth, determination blocked out the weak and sharp feeling in her limb. The ragdoll was focused on proving she was perfectly able to hunt.

Within the last few seconds of the hunt she paused, crouching down to give a mighty spring. Though of course, her leg was not allowing that. She fell flat, her chin slamming down onto the leaves with a crunch and a hiss. Scrambling back up she now saw the shrew had disappeared, along with her point. The molly sat down with a lash of her tail. "Great, fantastic, ain't that dandy. Whatever."

She sat there, stewing in anger and resentment at the owl- at the cut. After a few seconds she took a deep breath, her scrunched up face mellowing out. Real strength isn't pushing through pain is it? Smart warriors know when to quit." She turned tail, but not with shame or anger anymore. She was in fact a bit prideful for recognizing her problem. Not every cat could do that now could they?

(ooc: sorry for turning this into an Olive dev topic kinda, I just saw an opportunity for character development and went with it. If you want more dawn based/focused interactions I'm up for it anytime)
