Flutter On By (Closed)

Orchidpaw cast her gaze up towards the sky, noticing through the still-thick tree canopy that the sky had begun to darken towards sunset.  There was much more of a chill in the air now than at the start of their patrol, though her thick fur dimmed the effect, and she turned back to see where Oliverain and Dawnfeather had branched off to.  They had been marking and checking the border near the Fallen Oak for a while now, and pretty thoroughly at that.  Surely they could turn back to camp pretty soon, but that wasn't her call to make.  Dawnfeather was the eldest among them since she and Oliverain were sisters, it would make sense to ask her about it.  Stretching out each of her paws and letting out a silent but wide yawn, the fluffy brown-tipped she-cat was about to follow the path they had taken when a sudden noise caught her attention.  

Ears swiveling around followed by her eyes, Orchidpaw barely has time to react as a frantically flying robin nearly slammed into her chest!  Instincts kicking in, she slammed it down to the ground with her paws and nipped it behind the neck, killing the creature quickly.  Woah, that's a pretty fat robin!  Luck is with me tonight.  Smiling, the large molly was about to pick up her kill when she noticed a claw scratch on the bird's chest and that it's wing was hanging at an awkward angle.  That's odd...was something already hunting it?  She pondered this for a moment before brushing the curiosity away, picking the bird up by its broken wing and starting to pad away to show her sister and clanmate the catch.  As she trotted away from the border though, she didn't notice the scent of ThunderClan growing stronger and stronger...

Dawnfeather chirped lightly, padding next to Oliverain. The golden molly was enjoying her time away from camp more… fully than she’d ever had before. Even singing back at the birds couldn’t change the way she felt… that undercurrent of unease. They’d all been so mad, she- couldn’t think about that right now. Enjoying the time with her friend came first. She’d talked with Olive this entire patrol, laughing and simply loving the time spent. Now they walked in a comfortable silence- although Dawnfeather was chirping at the birds. A few birds and a squirrel lay buried behind them, proof of the young molly’s hunting skill- but now, they were simply enjoying themselves. 

“I’m glad I have you with me, Olive. It seems every time I’m here I’m attacked- usually quite violently! Prickletail (that’s his name, apparently), some orange tom, all those cats I thought were nice! At least now there’s three of us- oh, yes. Orchid- where- oh, right, she went off to hunt. Should I hunt some more? We’ve caught a lot for a border patrol- prey practically leaping into our paws!”


Prickletail was on patrol. Pheasantpounce… he didn’t mind. This other cat… yeah, as long as he kept his thoughts to himself. The tabby tom was not in a good mood- he hadn’t slept well the previous night, and now he was tired. Tired, grumpy, and short-tempered. He looked around with annoyance at the sound of a snapped twig. Ugh. Some squirrel, or part of his patrol. Lashing his tail, he continued onwards. Life sucked.

Oliverain was in almost as good of a mood as her friend, smiles and gentle but deep laughs all the way. Both her best friend and her sister, that was a great duo to be on patrol with. Watching colorful leaves bounce in the wind she wondered when Orchidpaw would return. It's been a bit long, but she should be back any moment. The molly knew her sister was just hunting, and that she could certainly handle herself, but there was that itch of worry behind her dark ears. Dawnfeather's voice shook her out of her thoughts. Oliverain's tail combed through the underbrush. "I'm happy you're here too, and if that tom tries to attack we'll make sure it's the last time. He will never step paw here again," she promised lightheartedly, followed by a playful laugh. Yet if there was to be a battle, there would be no hesitation. She didn't want- she wouldn't let Dawn get hurt, neither of them. Oliverain looked around them, checking for Orchidpaw real quickly before turning back to Dawnfeather. "You've caught a lot, I'm sure we'll be fine if we stop hunting for a bit." She smiled and flicked her tail at Dawnfeather's nose before jumping ahead to check for any intruders, but close enough to hear if the molly had anything to say.

She gazed around the area before alarm rose in her chest as she caught scent of Thunderclan, stronger than just territory markings. "I think Thunderclan is nearby, Dawn," the warrior informed. She could feel that worry behind her ears again. They might have found Orchidpaw. I don't hear any battle but who knows. How far away are they? Oliverain carefully watched the shadows, slightly tempted to bring Dawn with her up a tree. She shook her head, remembering she was a warrior, it was her job to defend her territory. If she found the Thunderclan cats on the wrong side of the border, she was ready to fight by Dawn's side.

Pheasantpounce's gaze set on the robin perched above her head, yet on a low enough branch that she was eager to reach it. Stopping to prepare for her leap, she fell behind the patrol. It had been way too long since those mice she ate that morning, time for another snack. Stretching herself upwards she swung at the twig, her jaws anticipating the plump bird. The long calico only grazed her claws on the robin, descending back down with a hiss. Why was I named Pheasantpounce when I can't even get this bird? He didn't even move, he's so fat! She crouched down, jumping up at the critter once more. The robin took off the branch, flying away in an awkward and frantic way. Pheasantpounce watched it flutter away while her tail trashed, that was enough.

Turning away to catch up to the patrol, she breathed in. Searching for more prey, easier prey, she blinked at that different scent. "Skkyy..clan?" she muttered with uncertainty, squinting at the smell. Whatever it was, there were cats somewhere. Opening her maw to tell her brother she slowly remembered they were at Skyclan border, which meant it was almost definitely the tree-climbers. "Hey I think there's cats nearby," she meowed, a tone that admitted she wasn't too concerned.

It didn't take long for Orchidpaw to find the other members of her patrol, emerging from the bushes with the fat robin clutched between her jaws.  Once she placed it down though, her nose twitched at an unfamiliar scent; ThunderClan was near the border.  Turning her gaze back to where she had come the muscular she-cat twitched her ears, seemingly contemplating something.  Looking back at Dawnfeather and Oliverain, she meowed quizzically; "There seems to be a ThunderClan patrol nearby, close to the border.  Should we make sure they don't cross over?"  Orchidpaw didn't consider herself particularly confrontational, peace was definitely preferable unless there was no other choice, however, she knew that a good warrior defended their territory and challenged all outsiders.  It was the Warrior Code, as her mother had clearly taught her, and the apprentice's alert tail and determined eyes displayed her readiness to uphold her duty to SkyClan...that was if her sister and elder clanmate agreed.

Dawnfeather purred softly… until Oliverain mentioned she scented ThunderClan and Orchidpaw backed her up. “Ooooo… wait, why are you asking m- oh. Right. Erm. Olive, you’re better at these things than I am… but we should probably make sure they don’t cross the border.  I don’t see any ThunderClan cats…” she mewed in a forlorn hope, craning her neck to try to glimpse a pelt through the trees.

Prickletail narrowed his eyes at his sister’s response. “Filthy tree-climbers. I’ve had no trouble with them before- well, no trouble beating them. Let’s see…” He slunk through the underbrush to the border… Aha. His sister’s robin. Well. If SkyClan wanted to steal their prey, they’d regret it. His claws sunk into the ground, and he motioned Pheasantpounce closer with a tail flick. They were outnumbered… but he wanted so desperately to sink his claws into someone’s pelt. And that apprentice was his best bet-

Dawnfeather let out a startled yelp as an oh-too-familiar pelt crashed through the undergrowth, cannoning into Orchidpaw. “Olive, help her!” she yowled, turning her attention to the second pelt she’d glimpsed in the bushes. She couldn’t let them all pile onto Orchidpaw- and so she leapt at the calico pelt, obscured by the brambles and heat of battle. “Sorry!” she cried, ricocheting off a tree trunk and onto the molly.

Prickletail used Jumping Strike, dealing 9 (6+3) damage and costing 7 SP. Dawnfeather used Leaping Bound, dealing 4 damage and costing 10 stamina. Pheasantpounce is pinned for one turn.

Only when her sister arrived did Oliverain realize she had been holding her breath. Exhaling with relief she listened to Orchidpaw and Dawnfeather's exchange, about to chip in her own opinion when a yelp came from her friend, along with a blur darting into Orchidpaw. The large ragdoll was already pouncing at the attacker, her hisses of battle drowning out whatever Dawnfeather had just said to her. She pushed into his shoulders, knocking the tom over. "Thunderclan vermin!" she screeched while biting into his fur. How dare he have the audacity to attack Orchidpaw, to hurt her, she wouldn't stand it. Blood filled her mouth, anger filled her mind.

Oliverain used Jumping Strike on Prickletail, dealing 8 damage (5 + 3 Not Focused) and costing 7 stamina.

Pheasantpounce stalked after her brother, peering through the brush and foliage. She was right, three Skyclan cats. I can take the golden one, Prickletail will have the other two, he's strong enough to not get destroye- nevermind. Her brother had already gone ahead, tackling one of the cats. She watched as a big cat attacked her patrol mate, He'll be fine, she promised herself, about to pounce at the blue eyed warrior before finding the Skyclanner to no longer be there. Where- Something came upon the she-cat, or rather someone. She spotted golden fur through the branches, strong limbs holding Pheasantpounce down. "Mousedung!" she spat at the opponent, in a name-calling way.

Orchidpaw listened to Dawnfeather's rambling answer to her simple question, and couldn't quite hide her annoyance.  It's an obvious answer, why does she always have to be so long-winded and indecisive? Maybe I should've just asked my sister.  Icy-blue eyes narrowed a bit, the almost fully-grown apprentice opened her mouth to speak and say something she probably would've regretted when, suddenly, the breath was knocked out of her.  A startled cry escaping her, Orchidpaw felt herself hit the ground and tumble a bit underneath a cat's paws, but her wits returned to her very quickly.  Rocketing to her paws, the large lynx-point molly set eyes on the tom who had taken her unawares and let out a long hiss.  ThunderClan, I knew I had a bad feeling about them being so close by!  Not bothering to waste time on words like her patrolmates, Orchidpaw dove towards the tom and smashed her paw right across his face with unsheathed claws.  Raising her hackles, her furious icy eyes darted to meet Oliverain's and she growled, "Drive him back towards the border, you don't belong here!"

Oooh… maybe this hadn’t been the best idea. These were obviously two very angry mollies, and ow-ow-ow they had very sharp teeth and claws- oh stars not the eyes not the eyes! Prickletail pulled himself back, her unsheathed claws striking the air just in front of his eyes… eergh… and with a burst of sudden strength, threw himself to the side, shaking off the larger molly, who luckily hadn’t managed to pin him. His eyes gleamed as he shot forwards, sinking his claws into the apprentice’s fur… her pelt was thick, and he hadn’t managed to claw her as deeply as he’d like… or sink his teeth into her throat. She’d pay for this, little prey-stealer.

Dawnfeather gave an apologetic murmur, only partially unsheathing her claws as she leapt off the calico (she thought, the dappled light made it hard to see) molly, skidding to a stop between her and the tussle between Olive and the tabby tom. She couldn’t let her reinforce Prickletail… she had to keep her distracted.

The young warrior leapt forwards, claws unsheathed. She didn’t like doing this… but she’d do it for Olive and Orchidpaw. She had to keep them safe… the younger molly’s words had reminded her that this was her responsibility, as the eldest on the patrol. She had to defeat this molly as quickly as possible so she could help Olive and her sister. Even though said sister seemed a bit riled.
