It was Mistlepaw's first assigned patrol today, and she was going out with Loudnose. Ravenwing was ill, and it was possible that she would get a new mentor soon, but for now she knew she had to at least start to learn things. Hunting would be the first challenge. She had gotten the moth to land on her, so lizards and rodents couldn't be too different. However, she struggled to imagine a mouse leaping onto her face.

The tabby tom was waiting at the camp entrance for her, and she greeted him with a small dip of her head. He was another warrior who was sort-of-her-family-but-not-really, as Mistyfalcon was his father. She barely new him though. "Is it only us?"

Even though the sky was gloomy that afternoon, Loudnose was still bright as ever. He sat near the camp entrance, gazing up at the sad clouds. Today he was going to be hunting with an apprentice, and not just any apprentice, but one his dad Mistyfalcon had... adopted? The tom replayed the word in his head, making sure it was the right one. The molly herself had just shown up, which Loudnose nodded his tabby head to in greeting. "Yep just us, unless you were hoping for someone else to come," he said with a flick of his tail, "But we should probably get going, we can not wait for another cat. I mean unless you really need to." The tom could hardly stand still, he ducked through the thorn tunnel, hurrying his way through. Once he was on the other side Loudnose looked back to check if the apprentice had followed him. If he came off as inconsiderate to Mistlepaw, he hoped she knew he didn't mean to.

Mistlepaw didn't reply, just followed the older warrior out of camp. He went off quickly, but the apprentice managed to keep up, even if she was struggling slightly. The hunting experience she'd had was limited, mostly to kit games where they hunted leaves and bugs. Leaves were much nicer to hunt, because they didn't remind her of her moth friend; she'd feel extremely guilty if she killed a friend's family. "The prey should run to us today." That's what had happened with the moth. She really needed to name this 'moth friend'. Shimmer? No, that made it sound sparkly. Bright? It was bright against the dark of the night, almost luminescent. She liked Bright.

Turned out, it didn't take too much to scent prey when you ate it everyday. A frog calmly sat on a rotted fallen log nearby, and Mistlepaw crept towards, trying to mimic what she'd seen the other apprentices do. The slimy little creatures weren't always the nicest to eat, but she made no comment on it, because she didn't want to be rude. Pine needles on the floor meant that she didn't have to try to keep her paw steps quiet. But she still needed to stay focussed. It was a key part of hunting, one she hadn't learnt yet, and wasn't very good at. Her steps faltered as she examined the twisting dark and light of the tree's bark, how the fungus seemed to bloom out of it. She'd stayed still too long. The frog had spotted her and made it's quick escape, never to be seen again.

Yep, she was there. Loudnose continued out into the territory, being careful not to step on any twigs or the like. There was a lot to master when hunting, and the tom had the hang of it, but he still had a lot to learn. Which of course he was excited for, more things to do. Loudnose watched Mistlepaw hunt a frog, while (a bit randomly) thinking about what his favorite prey was. Frogs are okay but lizards are better. Or bugs, bugs are always tasty. He couldn't decide. As the apprentice missed her catch Loudnose wanted to suggest they hunt together, with one cat chasing the prey to the other's claws. This was his favorite way to hunt but it might be a hassle. It will be fine, he thought as he lowered down into a crouch, breathing in to find lizard scent nearby. He stalked through the marshes, eventually finding the reptile. He steadied himself before leaping at the prey. Unfortunately, he landed on his feet wrong. The lizard scuttled away, only leaving swaying ferns in it's wake. Standing back up and giving his fur a shake, Loudnose returned to Mistlepaw, telling her he missed. "We will get it eventually. Now tell me, what is your favorite prey?"

When the warrior missed his catch, it did make Mistlepaw feel slightly less bad for doing the same thing. She paused to think about his question for a bit, quietly considering her options. "Mice are good. They aren't slimy or tough on the outside." Shadowclan could sometimes struggle a surprising amount when it came to prey, meaning the most likely thing to find on the fresh-kill pile were reptiles and sometimes frogs, which didn't welcome being eaten quite as much as a warm-blooded creature. Luckily, mice hid almost everywhere around the forest.

With her favourite prey now fixed in her mind, Mistlepaw found herself scenting the air and picking up mouse. She could've just been imagining it; the talk of prey and lost catches was starting to make her hungry. However, scuffling on the ground nearby gave away the little animal's location, and sent the apprentice right towards it. Remembering what she had watched Loudnose do, she crouched down and crept towards it. Her technique and form was nowhere near perfect, but it seemed to get the job done. Much to her shock, when she pounced towards it, the mouse got trapped between her paws. Her leap had been mostly based on kit-games like cat and mouse, but was nonetheless effective. Slightly messily, she killed it, remembering what the prey she ate in camp looked like.

"I knew the prey would run to us." She said after placing her catch in front of Loudnose, a slight glimmer of pride showing in her eyes.
