The wind that ruffled Badgermask's fur held the promise of Leaf-fall in its brisk, crisp presence. As she moved through the underbrush, expertly weaving between brambles and ivy, the warrior lifted her nose and breathed deeply, savoring it. This Greenleaf had been harsh... the fire that claimed most of SkyClan's territory had not left ThunderClan's unscathed, and though the prey had returned, and new growth was beginning to take place of the old, the trees in this area still bore scars from the flames, bits of blackened char, now long-cooled and glistening blackly beneath a coat of morning dew. She was looking forward to the cold, and it would be here soon.
Pausing for a moment to pull a thorn from between her pads, Badgermask let her eyes sweep the horizon, the sky above rapidly growing lighter with each passing heartbeat. It was beautiful, a mixture of blue and pink and purple... and she felt a deep calm wash over her. Things were starting to get better... and like the dawn did each morning, ThunderClan would rise again.
A couple of deep croaks caught her attention, and Badgermask flicked her gaze over to the commotion happening within a patch of tall grasses just within her line of vision. A couple of crows, dark, mischievous birds, were harassing something she couldn't see. Curious, the warrior dropped into a crouch, slinking paw-over-paw towards it. They were distracted enough that she drew close, crouched, and then with expert precision, launched herself upward at the next bird to dive down. It didn't see her coming, only offering a startled caw as the dappled warrior's claws sank into its wings, gravity dragging them both down to the ground the next second. She dispatched the animal with a swift nip to the neck, and it went limp.
Satisfied with herself, Badgermask flicked her tail, picking the bird up and turning away to find somewhere to store it until she was ready to go home. And then... the slightest noise made her ear slant sideways, towards that patch of tall grass. The other crow had made haste to escape, and there was nothing else in sight, so... cautiously, she moved towards the grass, parting it with a paw and immediately being greeted with the sight of... a kit! Astonished, the crow fell from her jaws. What in StarClan's name was a kit doing out here alone? It was on the older side of kithood, clearly nearing the age at which it - he, she confirmed with a quick inhale - would be apprenticed, but... he wasn't ThunderClan. And he didn't smell of any other clan, either...
"Hi there," she murmured. "Are you okay?"
