Stoatfur wasn't all that much older than his former mentor's kits. In fact, his apprenticehood had gone by so quickly that in some weird and indescribable way, he almost missed it. But he certainly did not miss sharing a den with cats near his own moons of age. There was a lack of maturity there, a senselessness that he detested. Thinking about it again... maybe he didn't miss much about apprenticehood. There came a short huff, an inhalation of air at the idea.

Starlingpaw and Wasppaw were close behind in tow. He hoped they missed the nearly inaudible sound he made, and followed it up with a softly feigned sneeze. This particular patrol he was leading was nothing too exciting. The evening sun was mild and the day was pleasant. Perhaps they didn't have to speed through this and could maybe enjoy the jaunt though their territory; that was if he could stand patrolling with apprentices.

"Hm, well we could keep padding along and hoping the prey will come to us, or we could go out to catch something. Obviously I have the most experience so I'll likely get something decent but... do you think that one of you could out hunt me?" There was a challenge in his gaze, as he glanced back over his shoulder. Despite the surface level confidence radiating from the tom, his prod was mostly a tease above all else.

He'd lead them towards Snakerocks. It would make this whole endeavor all the more fun avoiding the snakes at their pads and easy to pinpoint the prey that made a wide arc around such a dangerous place. Maybe the pair would sharpening more than their hunting skills today.

Wasppaw held his tail high in the air, intent on keeping it pristine. He was very excited at the prospect of hunting, but he hadn't considered what it would mean for his usually immaculate pelt. He hoped wherever they were headed wasn't muddy. Dust he could tolerate, mud he could not.

He glanced at Starlingpaw and grinned an openly sarcastic, mocking grin he reserved especially for the most troublesome of his siblings. That was hypocritical coming from Wasppaw, but obviously that didn't occur to him. "Bet I can catch twice as much prey as you can." He had heard Stoatfur's challenge, but beating Starlingpaw was much more important to him than beating the young warrior. Stoatfur wasn't on his radar at all apart from following him to Snakerocks, really.

Starlingpaw scoffed at the challenge he was presented from the other two. His yellow gaze turning towards his brother first. "Please, you are too afraid of getting dirty to be able to hunt better than me. I bet you will find the least amount of prey considering you have to groom your ugly mane every two seconds." The dilute tortie tom said.

"Now for you Stoatfur, I bet I can out hunt you any day. Now Wasppaw? I'm sure you could beat him in no time." Starlingpaw challenged not caring about how he spoke about his brother. His mouth was drawn back into a small snarl. He had something to prove now, and there was no way he was going to be outdone by his whimp of a brother. He would win, and prove to Thunderclan he was deserving of their attention.

"Hm." Stoatfur hummed softly, listening the sibling go back and forth, jibing at each other. Admittedly, it annoyed him that they hardly seemed interested in trying to best him at a hunting match. The frail sense of pride came from a place where he could measure himself against others. One ear flickered in acknowledgement of Starlingpaw's response, a little bit of budding satisfaction, "Alright then, Starlingpaw, prove it to me. Show us all that you're worthy of being a warrior."

The little warrior trotted a bit of a distance away, keeping his paws light. Maw parted, he drank in the air to seek out a target. It was around these fringes that the prey would hide in the shadows away from the serpents that lurked underneath the shade of snakerocks. Finally, the tom caught sight of a small outline. A rabbit seemed blissfully unaware of the dangerous situation it had found itself in. Claws unsheathed to score the grass and dirt. It was one fluid movement that he leaped forward and caught the soft brown fur. Teeth sunk into the flesh, draining the life of his prey.

Satisfaction warmed his ears as the creature stopped its futile writhing. It was a rather large rabbit, food for more than enough cats. Clutching it between his fangs gingerly, the young warrior padded back to the pair of apprentices. He dropped it, hoping that they'd at leased glanced in the direction to see how a proper catch was done, "Now, that's how a warrior does it, kits."

Stoatfur attempted to catch a rabbit. It was successful! -3hp

Starlingpaw was a little amazed by Stoatfur's catch. A rabbit? That was difficult. He heard only Windclan could catch those. Or was it Hares? Either way, he didn't let his surprise hold him for too long. He quickly steeled himself. He had to show he was worthy of being a warrior. Now in his mind he wasn't sure if he could beat Stoatfur, but he wasn't going to let anyone know that. He had to rise to all challenges.

Starlingpaw followed what Kestrelswoop had taught him and began scenting the air for any signs of prey, when he couldn't find any he shot his brother a glare before padding further into the forest away from the two cats that served as a distraction. Quickly he found a scent of a bird, and began to track it. Of course as soon as he got close enough, it fled. He drew his lips back in a silent snarl. Hopefully neither of them saw, for he was a good distance away. He would catch something better than them in no time.

Wasppaw couldn't help but marvel at Stoatfur's catch. Internally, of course- his face still sported the same dirt-eating grin it always did. Imagine the embarrassment if he was visibly amazed by Stoatfur, of all cats. To avoid such a situation, he turned his gaze to Starlingpaw. The slight against his fur- which was not ugly, in case anyone was wondering, nor overgroomed- did not go unnoticed, and the orange tom grinned in satisfaction as his brother failed to catch... Something. He couldn't see from this distance, he could barely see his brother at all, but for his own pride he chose to believe that the fact that Starlingpaw hadn't come back all haughty with prey in his mouth meant that he had failed.

His ears perked up at the sound of movement, and he remembered what he was here to do. Quietly turning towards the source of the sound, he spotted a bushy tail disappearing behind a rock. Squirrel. Not the most dignified or impressive of kills, but better than nothing...

He dropped down and crept towards it, careful not to let his silky fur drag on the ground. He'd rather lose the squirrel than several hours of grooming to get the dirt out. Once the squirrel was in his line of sight, he narrowed his eyes and jumped.

Success! The squirrel was beneath his unsheathed claws, struggling despite its broken neck. It soon stopped wriggling, at which point he grabbed it in his mouth and proudly trotted near Stoatfur. Careful not to place his smaller prey too close to the rabbit, so he could blame the size difference on the distance between them, he put his squirrel on the ground. He'd make Starlingpaw eat his words.
Wasppaw caught a squirrel, costing 3 stamina.
