The Prey Is Running Well [Mothpaw]

"Of course I made a good point," Mothpaw replied, wanting to roll her eyes but she didn't. it seemed like her and the grey she-cat were almost starting to get along and she didn't want to jeopardize that. "But we're brand new apprentices, we don't have to think about death for a long time."

With that said Mothpaw trotted further into the woods, sniffing out more prey. She heard a scuffle in a clump of pine needles near a tree, and thought it might've been a mouse... But it sounded bigger. She took in a deep breath. She hadn't scented this piece of prey before, but knew what it was from listening to apprentices talk when she had been a kit. It was a rat!

Mothpaw dropped into her hunting crouch, thankful there was two smaller trees between her and her prey that she could take cover behind to help make up for her bright white fur. The calico spots helped too, atleast she wasn't totally white.

She made it to the safety of the second tree, re-checked her hunting crouch, and slowly began to move towards the clump of pine needles the rat was nosing through. Using the muscles in her lithe hind legs she sprung forward, trapping the rat between her two paws and killing it with a quick bite to the neck.

She picked it up, carrying it back to where the rest of the prey was buried and adding it to their haul.

Smokepaw shook herself, spraying her surroundings with muddy water, and glanced at the younger apprentice, who had apparently caught a rat.

“Careful with those. Check it before you eat it. Rats can carry disease.”

Smokepaw cast her gaze around and sighted that annoying dove again, sitting on the ground and cooing.

“I was wrong. That dove does not have feathers for brains. It has no brains at all. First one to catch it wins!”

Without checking to see if the other apprentice approved, she ran towards the dove in the most mouse-brained way possible. The bird noticed her (a blind and deaf cat would’ve noticed her) and fluttered to a nearby branch, where it cooed again.

“I can’t decide who’s more mousebrained… me or the bird.”

Smokepaw attempted to catch a dove! Catch was unsuccessful.

Mothpaw surveyed the branch the dove had landed on, and bounded over, quieter and stealthier than Smokepaw had, but still she was sure the bird would see her pelt.

Once she got closer she knelt down into her hunting crouch, going in a wide circle so she could approach behind the tree and hopefully have a better chance at catching it. "You know, ShadowClan cats don't usually catch birds.." she muttered, too quiet for the dove to pick up. She wasn't even sure if Smokepaw had heard.

She had just about reached the base of the tree, and was trying to decide if she could get up to that first branch before the dove would fly off.
She decided to stop thinking and launched herself up the trunk, roughly hooking her claws into the first branch and pulling herself up.

The dove had flown off before she had even made it up there. Maybe birds would be easier if she were full grown and could jump high enough to get on the branch without going on the trunk first? Not that it mattered now.

The dove flew farther this time, but still within sighting distance, into another tree. It let out a little singsongy harmony, as if mocking the apprentices.

“I know we don’t catch birds usually. Think of what the other apprentices will think! The two newest apprentices caught a dove!”

Smokepaw trotted along behind Mothpaw, keeping an eye on the white feathers. Unfortunately, the younger cat missed. To be expected.

Smokepaw quietly ascended the new tree, taking care to not make noise. As she carefully stepped out onto the branch, it quaked, actually throwing the dove off. Before she could say fox-dung, it broke with a cracking sound and dropped her into the mud. Again.

“Did I scare it off?” she asked grumpily, rubbing water out of her eyes.

Smokepaw attempted to catch a dove! Catch was very unsuccessful.

Mothpaw motioned with her tail, flicking it back towards camp.

"I don't think we'll catch that bird... Perhaps we should try after we've gotten better at hunting?" Mothpaw suggested, while knowing full well even full ShadowClan warriors had trouble catching birds. "Let's bring our other prey back to camp!"

She trotted back towards where the rest was buried, getting it ready to bring back.

“Alright, alright,” Smokepaw muttered, obviously in a bad mood. She trotted back to the pile of leaves where her prey was buried and picked it up. “Had a good time, Mothpaw. Glad we could get some hunting in, ‘Kit.” With a light-hearted insult she sped off to camp, eyes shining. “Last one there is a frog-brain!” A good time had been had by all, and Smokepaw looked forwards to more such times in the future. Mothpaw wasn’t half bad.
