Time to Train (Closed for Rippy)

"Follow me," she meowed after Stoatpaw's apprentice ceremony.  She walked out of camp, making sure the young apprentice was following her.  "So, Stoatpaw, are you excited to be an apprentice?" She said, trying to make conversation, which was not all that easy for her.  She continued to walk as he responded.

She found a spot that seemed like a pretty good place to hunt from her past experiences.  She was about to ask him what he had learned about hunting and teach him how, when she felt like she was being watched.  She opened her maw to tell him about hunting, when she quickly closed it and turned around to see an owl standing on a branch above them.  The owls eyes glaring menacingly down towards them.  Waterlily had no idea what to do, even though she knew she should be doing something.  Quickly, the owl hopped off of the branch and began swooping down towards them.

Watching in terror, she saw that it was going for Stoatpaw.

"Stoatpaw, watch out!"  She yelled, jumping in front of the young apprentice.  This knocked her to the ground when the owl came towards her to attack again, she unsheathed her claws and scratched at the owls chest as it flew by.  Drips of blood from the passing owl dripped on her fur.  The owl retreated momentarily, but she saw it turn around again, towards her and Stoatpaw.  With the little time she had she quickly got up and looked with her mismatched eyes at the apprentice.  "Don't be nervous," she said very fast, before the owl got to them again.  "That will only make you stall.  Use your claws, teeth or anything you can.  And make sure that it doesn't hurt you."  With that she again looked back towards were the owl was coming.  Her eyes widened and her heart beat fast.  The owl could even carry off the apprentice if it was strong enough.  Even though Waterlily told Stoatpaw not to be afraid, she definitely was.

A curious excitement buzzed his little paws, pads shuffling eagerly after his mentor. Her willingness to get started immediately, rather than force him to wait a whole sleepless night, instantly increased the level at which the young tom regarded her. Bright eyes widened to drink in the forest as Waterlily lead them from the camp walls for the first time. He understood there were reasons for the rules, even if he had detested them so strongly in kithood. But now was the chance for Stoatpaw to realize his true potential and seek out all the knowledge that these forests had to give.

After a moment, she pressed him with a rather redundant question. It took everything in the apprentice to not let out a light-hearted snort - this was his mentor who was due respect after all. Pressing back a snarky retort that would have pointed out the way his tail flickered to and fro excitedly, the little tom instead opted for a more acceptable answer, "I've been waiting several moons, Waterlily, I'm more than ready to learn." Along with it, the slender white and brown apprentice managed a pleasant smile and respectful nod.

Not long after they stopped and he glanced about, trying to drink in their surroundings. Why she brought him here, Stoatpaw was oblivious, but he was ready to find out. Already, his maw was parted to press for answers. The scene before him exploded instead. Waterlily was in front of him in an instant. There came a flash of claws and sprinkling of blood. Surely they weren't going to be doing battle training already? Above the pair of Thunderclan cats glowered a menacing bird, easily four times the size of any robin that he had ever seen in the freshkill pile, maybe more.

He'd been staring at it, registering the color of the feathers and the size of those overwhelming talons, when the she-cat called out a directive. Stoatpaw had wanted the opportunity to learn like a real warrior. Well, this seemed to be his chance. Ignorant to the danger at paw, confidence and enthusiam budded in his chest, quickly covering up what little flash of fear he felt, "Right." The tom glanced down at his paws, watching as his claws came unsheathed into the earth. Thrushnose had taught him to sheath them well in play with other kits but now was the time to use them.

As the creature rocketed forward with astounding speed, he was ready, eyes calculating the movement. And then, Stoatpaw lashed out with his front claws, raking at the feathers and seeking out soft flesh.

Waterlily saw Stoatpaw slice the bird and she began to have a pleased smile on her face, but it quickly went away as she saw the owl turn to attack the apprentice.  It's wings flapped in and out, so she only saw glimpses of what was happening, but she was the birds talons connect with Stoatpaw's skin and rush down.  She saw some blood rush down the apprentice's fur.

With a hiss, Waterlily ran towards the bird.  She leaped on it's side, pushing to too the ground.  Her jaws wrapped around its neck and pushed it down as good as she could.  "Affack, if Stoatpaw!"  She said through mumbled words because of the feathers she had in her mouth.

It swooped down without hesitation, scraping down the length of his back. Stoatpaw clenched his teeth and hissed at the pain as he pressed himself closer to the earth in an effort to briefly make himself smaller. Waterlily managed to catch it and pin it to the ground; the warrior called out a command. Underneath the wincing of pain, came a determined meow, "You don't need to tell me twice." The words likely weren't heard by Waterlily who was taming the thrashing beast. Regardless, the tom rushed forward, battering at it with unsheathed claws. Underneath the glint of the evening sun, his shining white talons quickly became flecked with blood and feathers. For the moment, it seemed that his mentor had things under control; regardless, in preparation, muscled coiled tightly underneath his pelt.

Waterlily still held the owl in her jaws, but she was unsure for how much longer. She pushed down on it with all of her power, trying to keep it to the ground as long as possible. Stoatpaw was doing great fighting back and Waterlily just hoped it would be enough to kill it. The owl thrashed around and it was taking a lot of energy for her to keep it on the ground so it wouldn't attack them.
