Feeling Squirrelly [C, Little Ripped]

It was a matter of time. He’d be an apprentice.

Squirrelkit’s tail flicked behind him, flicking as he concentrated. It was approaching greenleaf and there was something magic about the longer days and the longer sunsets.

He had gotten into the habit of watching cats come and go from the mouth of the nursery. The others were tired, so he had to be quiet. He’d be in big trouble if he woke them up...

Squirrelkit watched an apprentice walk back to camp, and he excitedly bounded their way. His body twitched, barely containing his zeal.

“HEY! How’re you? What’re you up to? Did you do something cool? What did you do?”

Waterlily walked back into camp after a peaceful morning of hunting with the other cats in her patrol.  It was a normal thing now, to go hunting, but it always still felt sort of... special.  She knew it wasn't, but after being a kit and waiting for so long to be able to go hunting, it was nice that she got to do it and she wouldn't take that for granted.  It was just all so peaceful.

So, she was very surprised when a kit rushed up to her and started to ask her a lot of questions.

She slightly jumped, in surprise when the kit spoke, but centered herself not that long after.  "Oh um..." She blinked a few times, not speaking, but brought herself back to the new conversation.  "Uh, hi, Squirrelkit?" It was that awkward moment when she thought she knew the cats name, but wasn't sure.  "I'm doing fine... I just got back from a hunting patrol, which was fun.  How are you?  What were you doing?"

"I was watchin' cats. Everybody else is 'sleep, so I couldn't do nothin' fun."

"How is hunting?"

The limited description he had of hunting was bizarre to say the least. Being quiet all that time? How?!

Squirrelkit didn't know how he'd be the best warrior ever, but he would try. The dark ginger tom beamed with a sunny aura, a silly smile on his face.

"So what are ya gonna do now?"

"It was good," she responded.  "It's sort of a regular thing now that I'm a warrior, but I must admit it still is pretty exciting whenever I am told to go on a patrol."

She thought about what the young kit said about everyone being asleep.  She was a kit that didn't require as much attention as most kits.  This probably had to do with her living on her own for a while and just accepting that was how things were.  But for most kits she would imagine that it was harder for them to go without attention from others, which made her feel sort of bad for Squirrelkit.

"I don't have anything planned now... What would you like to do?  You must be bored and I wouldn't mind hanging out with you, if that's what you would like."
